I think a more appropriate question would be... "why do you even know about that Barbie adventure!?" MLP is acceptable girl stuff. Barbie is not.

Regarding the OP question, and this may surprise some, but I will explain my answer, if MLP broke the 4th wall I'd compare them to Sailor Moon.

Yes indeed. Take the pilot episodes from season 1, you have a group of friends, perfectly normal ponies who have never known any special abilities, but it turns out they possess the elements of harmony within themselves, which give them special powers when combined allow them to defeat the sinister evil, Nightmare Moon, who had been imprisoned for a thousand years. Now, compare that to Sailor Moon, where a bunch of teen girls, perfectly normal in every way (well, if you don't count Usagi's incessant whining) discover they are actually Senshi with unique powers and combine their forces to fight a sinister evil, Queen Beryl, who had been lurking in a shadow dimension for close to a thousand years and was trying to steal energy from earth, etc...

 

The girls in Sailor Moon don't always get along, but they do learn a lot about friendship along the way. They face enemies and hardships, but they grow closer because of it all. They argue and quarrel, but deep down they really care for each other. In MLP the ponies have issues each episode, they sometimes quarrel, but they really love each other too, and every time they face a challenge they grow closer from it.

 

It's not a perfect comparison, but there's enough there to see a lot of similarities.

And I don't care if you y'all judge me. I've played a bunch of Barbie games for the GBA and half the time they are actually pretty fun games, even if they are overly simplistic.

 

I gotta say my favorite Barbie game is Super Agent Barbie. Smooth platformer.

 

If I cared about being judged for things I like, even if they happen to be seen as more girly things, I wouldn't be on a MLP forum at all.

I've caught a few references already.

 

"Sonic Rainboom" episode had a subliminal Skittles "Taste the Rainbow" reference and slightly reference's Greek Mythology's Icarus (Rarity flies too high, her wings melt)

 

The end of Season 2's pilot 2 parter, the celebration is slightly reminiscent of the ending celebration of Star Wars Episode 4.

 

And just recently in the bowling alley in "Cutie Pox" there are three background characters designed off of The Big Labowski.

 

 

In "Fall Weather Friends" Twilight's number for the race is 42 which I would've overlooked as coincidence, but Twilight's the nerdy one and 42 is a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference which is a pretty nerdy book/movie so the reference seems legit.

I figured it was a reference to Goats when they faint.

There's also the ever eager Pegasus from Sonic Rainboom that happens to be named Leeroy which I thought was a clever reference that wasn't too obvious!

 

I could probably find more references within the cartoon if (more accurately when) I rewatch the series!
