music I'm annoyed by the term "Classic Rock"

Classic rock isn't a real genre. Stuff like Led Zeppelin and Queen are hard rock, stuff like Rush and Pink Floyd are progressive rock.

"Genres are formed by conventions that change over time as new genres are invented and the use of old ones are discontinued. Often, works fit into multiple genres by way of borrowing and recombining these conventions"

I.E., by this definition, Led Zeppelin is Hard Rock AND Classic Rock, at the same time.

Classic Rock has elements of rock music that started what we know of the genre.

Eh, Classic Rock is easier to say than "the majority of the popular bands from 3 decades".

But yeah, when it is used as an all encompassing genre, it does bug me. I'm not quite as much a genre nazi as some, though.

Beatles and Hendrix were psych rock (Beatles changed a lot more to poppish sounds over time, though). I'd call Queen Glam Rock, but they did a lot of different stuff.

Rock evolved mostly from rockabilly, itself a fusion of country, blues and R&B. Country was a result of early American folk music, R&B came from a blend of Gospel and Jazz, while those two genres, along with blues, evolved from African folk music.

Actually, most of our modern music can be traced back to African folk music brought over by slaves, as well as the songs they made while working.

You're reaching back a LOT farther then classic rock here though. I mean i get what you're saying about the traces of rock music from blues and the original r&b (not the 80's style of course happy.png ) and certainly zeppelin was mostly a glorified cover band during their first 2 albums (using a lot of classic blues songs re-written or covered). But Classic Rock and Rock & Roll (50's and early 60's) are a pretty clear split in audiences and generations and all that comes into play when drugs (ie pschedelic in the uk and on the west coast), blues & hard rock's distortion pedals (the earliest beginning of metal), and britain taking the lead (the british invasion of 60's beat and psyche) and most of that does really move on from rockabilly and what the "oldies" started with (itself another radio styled format term). Obviously there's connections there but rather loose. And that's before we get into prog, glam, krautrock, and art rock which moved even further from that.

Ughhh. Classic Rock is NOT a genre of music. Rock is a genre of music, but classic rock isn't. Saying classic rock is a genre of music is like saying old-skool hip hop is a genre of music.

80s/90s hip-hop can be a distinct subgenre, though. Listen to stuff like old Ice Cube or Public Enemy and compare it to the hip-hop of today, there are like no similarities. That's different than classic rock, though, because it only describes bands from a certain time. Like, you wouldn't call Ghost B.C. or Boris classic rock even though they share some sounds with "classic rock" bands like Led Zeppelin or Rush.

I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE IT ALL BUT IN THE END IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER /WRISTS

Says you, that is your opinion. If you were just planning to spread your opinion, I don't understand what we're discussing here at all.

I wouldn't call Electric Wizard or Opeth's softer stuff "classic rock" either. But yea, N.W.A doesn't sound very modern.

It's a radio format, not a genre. The Velvet Underground and Deep Purple are both "classic rock" yet they sound nothing alike. Even wikipedia says it's a radio format. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_rock

i don't personally care bout "genre-ism" and think some people take it way too far when they get pissed off about people labelling certain artists under the wrong genre. it's actually quite hilarious to see, like say people getting their panties in a twist about what is a dubstep artist and what is an electro one, or in this case, people getting upset about classic rock not being an actual genre.

my 2 cents about this: who gives a damn fuck, just enjoy the bloody music already.

I think we've agreed with you on some of your points but also answered that there is meaning behind the name  (much like with a genre name) and in how people use it. Part of the reason for a thread is we listen to you and you to us and we've brought up some valid points already that you're glossing over still. TBH I can't say that Velvet Underground rarely got played on any classic rock radio (a bit too eclectic) and Electric Wizard and Opeth wouldn't show up with the same group. Instead of being annoyed maybe its time to come to terms that people like using that word and do have a more specific meaning in mind when they use it....
