The "dark part" of Baby Cakes somehow reminded me of a horror movie I've seen, can't put my finger on which though :/

I got the vibe of Amnesia: The Dark Descent from some part of it myself!

In the episode 'A Bird in the Hoof' Celestia's phoenix turns to ash and is reborn, Harry Potter reference much? :D

I dunno, that's what all Phoenixes do. It's not just Harry Potter, so I don't think that's really defined. Unless the events are done in (at least near) exact same way.

My mind is STILL blown over this Trainspotting reference from Baby Cakes, probably THE most adult reference in the show. Seriously, drug trips. Wut.

Though the head-turning thing (minus the crawling on the ceiling) is from The Exorcist.

The Phoenix is an ancient mythological creature, just as ancient and widespread as dragons. It appears in many cultures, from the Greeks, Persians, and Egyptians, to more oriental cultures. There are several variations of the story, (some say it lives 500 years, and others say 1000) but most agree that the phoenix will build a nest when it is about to die. After it finishes, the nest bursts into flames, and an egg emerges from the ashes. It is an ancient symbol of the eternal cycle of nature, and resurrection.

Some references I've seen are

Gollum reference in Lesson Zero.

(also, Canterlot was inspired by Minas Tirith)

Disney references in Secret of My Excess. Sorcerer's Apprentice music and Merlin scene from Sword in the Stone.

King Kong references in Secret of My Excess.

(replaced skyscraper with mountain and planes with Wonderbolts)

Also, some songs from the show were inspired by broadway songs like,

At the Gala is based on Ever After from Into the Woods, and

The Art of the Dress is based on Putting it Together from Sunday in the Park with George.

Which songs are the closest?

Trouble (here in River City) first and foremost. (trouble trouble trouble trouble, cider cider cider cider)

Rock Island ("Cash" while on the train, the first song after the Overture). Its patter-song style of rapid fire lyrics are why.

Marian the Librarian.Because of the jamming of too many syllables into the rhythm and somehow managing to get it to work all the while. However, Meredith Wilson was much better at it than William Anderson.

OK, this is not really from the show but this just seems to fit Luna like a glove:

And this youtube comment:

Hold your ground! Hold you ground!

Sons of Canterlot, of ponyville, my bronies! I see in your eyes the fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the magic of friendship fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day.

An hour of parasprites and shattered elements, when the age of bronies comes crashing down. But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand! Ponies of equestria!

Original from LOTR

Call of the Cutie mark is from "Call of Cthulhu"

In "Boast Busters", when Spike mentions that only upon seeing an Ursa Major "walking down the street" to be vanquished by Trixie will he believe her boasts, Snips gets an idea and asks Snails, "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Snails then replies with a non sequitur answer.

The Ticket Master chase scene is 100% Benny Hill, even to the point where the music is a remix of Benny Hills. There's a Cinderella reference in the Grand Gala episode where Rarity drops her shoe.

Discord's design is an exaggeration of the legend that there are hundreds of animal parts found in a Chinese Dragon.

I got some...

-One of the Diamond Dogs has a Gollum-like voice.

-In a Friend Indeed, besides the obvious Johnny Bravo ref, theres this one bit when Pinkie is going though Crankey's stuff and is all like "ooooo, what does this ball-thing do?" and Crankey is all "Don't touch that!" the tone of the way these lines where said are identical to the running gag with Dexter and Dee Dee from Dexter's Lab (the infamous "What does this button do?" line)

I dunno, that's what all Phoenixes do. It's not just Harry Potter, so I don't think that's really defined. Unless the events are done in (at least near) exact same way.

I still call it a Potter reference, or at least thats where they got the idea for the episode. In Potter, when Harry is in Dumbledore's office and he finds Fawkes, Harry didn't know Fawkes was was a Phoenix at first, so when he bursts into flames Harry is surprised, then Dumbledore walks in and Harry apologizes for what happened. Then Dumbledore goes onto explain that Fawkes was a Phoenix. Edited by SailorCardKnight

Yeah I know, I also felt that. I KNOW I have seen EXACTLY that scene in a horror movie but I just can't remember which one.

Rainbow Dash boinking her ball against the wall in Read it and Weep when she's in hospital is also a reference to a World War II movie; to one of the several Confinement scenes in The Great Escape.

I also noticed that one when I saw the episode since The Great Escape is one of my favourite movies.

Favorite Reference: Pinkie Pie and Deadpool. If this video isn't even slightly a Deadpool reference, I dont know what is! (Does that even make sense?)

It may just be to be funny... A coincidence... But it just makes a lot of sense to me.

In this weeks episode, Pinkie and the tomato lady were arguing over paying for 1 bit or 2 bits for a tomato, and it was a reference to Looney Tunes with "Rabbit Season, Duck Season"

And when Fluttershy says: "...Im a monster..." She slowly walks back to her house with music from the Incredible Hulk playing.

"Art of the Dress" is based in part on a Barbara Streisand song "Putting it together"

"Party of One" has a heap of rocks named Rocky who speaks with a Brooklyn accent and calls Rainbow Dash a "chump", for a Rocky reference. There is also "Sir Lints-alot" referencing Lancelot from the Arthurian legends. "Madam Le Flour" instead of "Le Fleur".

Am I the only one that sees absolutely no connection to either comics or the Clint Eastwood movie here?
