This is what Lauren Faust said, word for word, within an interview inside, 'The Elements of Harmony: The Official Guidebook' :

 

 

The ruins in the Everfree Forest where the Elements of Harmony were found were once Luna and Celestria's childhood home. It used to be part of Equestria, but the magical, uncontrollable forest encroached on it and they had to move their home to Canterlot. Perhaps the Everfree Forest is still creeping over the borders of Equestria...

 

 

As for why the forest was so uncontrollable, I point all my fingers at Discord.

Maybe it's something we don't yet know about. Perhaps some new Villian or, hopefully, gateway to a Smooze story campaign! (Wishful thinking)

Mayb it a a slow, eventual process. The paragraph didn't say when they moved out or how long they lived there.

Plus, Ponyville's only been there for about 60-70 years.

i guess this could be true. i mean, the princesses have been around for thousands of years. atleast more then thousand years according to the mare in the moon story.

My random theory for the magical forest is probably some evil-psycho witch who put a curse on the mainland devoured basically everything in that area. And the evil witch can be Zecora's ancestor just because I like making things more twisty :3

Actually the Zecora  plat I was considering as well. I wonder if they will throw any of this in soon. I hope so, a villain who works with nature would be intense.

Interesting... perhaps the most interesting part of all is childhood home, means for sure they aren't true immortal goddesses that have always existed, and implies that they do in fact have parents in some form.

 

But the way it's worded implies that they built Canterlot before Nightmare Moon, which throws a monkey wrench in my headcanon that the old castle was damaged during the fighting, plus Celestia just needed to get away from the bad memories and thus built Canterlot. It seems to be much more sun themed than moon themed too... although I suppose that could be part of what made Luna feel left out in the first place.

 

There's also the issue of the elements of harmony being left in the old castle, but I guess that's not so unbelievable for Celestia to take them back there after Luna is gone and she can't use them anymore.

I kinda assumed that the Everfree became the way it is after the battle with Nightmare Moon...

 

But now, with this new info, maybe they changed their home after the fight with Discord? Luna and Celestia fought him before the NMM event, so during the battle, the Everfree became the way it is. The forest itself is 'chaotic', since it's not controlled by ponies after all.

 

That's my opinion anyways.

Well, you don't have to blame everything on Discord. However, this opens up a new train of thought. I mean, you have to admit, if Discord left the Elements lying around where Celestia and Luna could find them, he must have been a pretty sloppy ruler.

Sounds interesting; I mean, I don't think I can imagine Celestia and Luna growing up the way Zecora did. I think the whole forest got bad because of natural reasons, not Discord.

That is something pretty new and unexpected, I guess that some unknown mysterious events must have occurred before Zecora came into the Everfree Forest which could have had some hidden remains of Celestia and Luna's childhood home.

Unless ponies don't biologically age based upon chronological age (perhaps more upon emotional age) which would explain why Ponyville was still around when there was a lot of division between pony races, why we see an adult Derpy at the summer sun festival when Twilight was a filly, and why the show runners said that Twilight will not outlive her friends.

I hope it isn't Discord, because that implies that it can be fixed.  And it shouldn't.

 

I personally hope Everfree is primordial magic, from the time before all.  It's dark, but it isn't evil.  It grows, but it's not truly malignant.   There's a huge distinction between those two things.

That's awesome! It's like a fan fiction, but it's official! I wonder if they'll include it in the show. I'd expect with Twilight being an alicorn, she'll learn more about Celestia's past, and that would definitely be a part of it!
