No! You didn't sound rude at all! I was just trying to explain myself so other people don't read this and think I hate Derpy because of the muffins thing because that's not the case. I think Princess Luna is an... okay Pony. I'm not keen on her in Luna Eclipsed because the 'royal speaking voice' grates on me. I love Luna's design but everything else about her is just... mehh. I'm impartial to Luna, I don't think she's had enough focus in the series to be honest.

Oh god, I'm going to get death threats? Time to change my whole profile! I don't think censorship can ever be over-reacted about though. Nothing should ever be censored. I live in the UK and they're essentially censoring certain P2P websites which is an absolute disgrace. I am personally glad that she was uncensored and brought back for Equestria Girls however I still dislike her in general.

That a problem with any character with a crap ton of fan you get a hand full of crazy ones. I don't think her representing difference it a bad thing. However the fans did go a little to crazy over a voice change imo.

I suppose that's just because people don't like changing something that they already like and I completely agree for the fans to be angry about that voice change. I know she's just a background pony but we'd all be annoyed if Twilight Sparkle suddenly had a voice change.

Somehow I've gone from hating Derpy to actually defending her O.o I think my main problem is the overuse of her and her design. I dislike the grey coat with blonde mane. However, I like the fact she is kind of a symbol of censorship being a bad thing.

For my part, I rather like Derpy. She's not my favourite pony, but I think she's fun and cute. I didn't really pay attention to the whole Derpygate thing (though I do disagree with her removal), so it didn't affect my opinion of her. Granted, some do take the hype for her a bit too far (though can that ever really be avoided?), but I think she's just a bit of good fun amongst the fandom and I personally don't see any reason to get grumpy over.

 

I like the idea of her being a sort of "delegate" for the fandom in that if it weren't for us, she wouldn't be anything more than a graphical anomaly, and that she stands as a sort of symbol that the show's staff really do notice us.

 

She actually reminds me of the Star Wars fandom, and how EVERY background character that had at least 0.01 seconds of screentime now has a detailed and elaborate backstory thanks to the fans. Like the other background ponies, she enriches the universe a bit and gives us another character to think about besides the Mane 6.

 

That said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I kinda like her... She's cute and all, but she doesn't really stick with me. It doesn't bother me that so many people adore her, although I would like to know how she's so famous or something.

Anyhow, no you aren't. I don't though. There isn't a whole lot to dislike, in my opinion. I've never really understood the fandom's fixation with her, and I think there are far better characters (and for that matter, background characters), but I don't have any animosity towards her in particular. Sure, I'll get a bit miffed when she beats out a character I love in a popularity poll or when people let her distract them from what was actually a pretty awesome episode, but I'm pretty neutral most of the time.

In all seriousness, I think its the fact that the fandom has fixated on a character which they've technically had to create a back story and name for etc. that kind of annoys me. I understand that kind of makes her the Brony's pony but she isn't really helpful in anyway to any story line.

I'm actually starting to think that the reason I dislike this pony so much is due to the fandom that she's got when in all honesty, I don't believe she deserves it.

I wouldn't say I hate her, but I don't like her at all. To me, she is very very overrated. She is definitely the most bland pony in my opinion. What really rustles my jimmies is that she spoke for like a few seconds and then completely overshadows Applejack in an episode about Applejack. Made no sense to me whatsoever. On top of that, the whole Derpy fiasco that happened. I mean, WHO CARES!? She is a background pony! Not a main character! Also, she is way overused. There are plenty of background ponies that people can use. Tons of them, but they usually go for Derpy...

@@Edgeworth1001, That's a VERY misguided reason to not like Derpy. If you're going to dislike a character, use how she was handled in the show and why. In other words, the character's qualities, flaws, and so on. Letting fandom baggage ruin your enjoyment for a character tells everyone here you were never a fan of her to begin with.

You need to really research her implications after she was censored. When Derpy was censored with an out-of-character voice, new tone from Rainbow Dash, the censoring of her name, and toned down wall-eyes, it implied that people who had mental or optical impairments (like strabismus/wall eyes) didn't and shouldn't exist. It implied that those people, young and old, are second-class citizens. Combined with the horrid acting and poor response from Hasbro itself, the magic from the original, cute, funny scene was stripped away. If the redubbing was handled well (which it wasn't), then we wouldn't be talking about it to this day. Consequently, the fandom was angry, and they had every right to be.

As for the OP's answer, Derpy is the bronies' pony. The fandom was responsible for giving her the life she currently has, both in the show and merchandise. Back when the fandom was still new, eagle-eyed bronies spotted her in the background in the form of an animation mistake. DHX (especially Faust) noticed and brought her into the show. Faust initially had a clumsy background character called "Ditzy Doo," but when Faust caught wind of Derpy, Ditzy was dropped from the cast and replaced with Derpy instead, starting with Feeling Pinkie Keen.

 

As she became more and more liked, fanworks surrounding her bloomed, particularly in fanfic and fanart (the medium she shines most). A lot of her works center round muffins* (as she said, "Muffins!" during Applebuck Season) and the fanon mother/daughter relationship with a lavender unicorn filly named Dinky Doo/Hooves (first seen in Winter Wrap-Up). But one of the most memorable pieces of pro-Derpy fanwork is a song. @@Blique linked it to you already, but I'll do it, too, with Forest Rain's inspiration for composing the song.

 

 

Of all of the background characters, Derpy is easily among the most popular (actually one of the most liked characters, period). The cute, funny scenes introduced her. Fanon helped enhance her popularity and create plausible stories for her to be there in Equestria. And her being there tells the adult brony audience that the staff is aware of their existence and strives to keep that close communication between the fandom and professionals, something you rarely see in any media.

 

*The muffins are now a part of her brand identity and personality.

The 2012 Derpy Comic-Con collectible figurine (licensed by Hasbro) featured muffins on the package. Also, during the Equestria Girls credits, Derpy dances during the tune while holding a muffin in her hands.

I must say, that second picture in your post of Derpy and Dinky is absolutely adorable. I am actually not quite sure where I stand on Derpy now as some of these posts have convinced me to see otherwise which is absolutely great! I still think she is very over-rated though.

To me the appeal of Derpy is twofold.

 

First, her personality, both canon and fanon, is adorable. I'm a big fan of Dr Whooves and Assistant, and I love her in that series, and in her canon appearances as well, whether it be going down the drain on Nightmare Night, poking her head out during Hearths Warming Eve, or destroying town hall. She's clumsy, but she means well and will always push forward no matter what happens. I like that.

 

The second reason for her appeal is what she represents. She is the symbol of the fandom's connection to the show. Someone that the fans have taken in as their own, which the writers and animators have noticed and responded in kind with further appearances. No other show has anything like that.

The scene from The Last Roundup (S2E14) was altered because parents of the target audience of the show felt that Derpy was "offensive" to the mentally handicapped. Many people blamed an artist name Yamino.

That specific artist sent a compliant to Hasbro. She disliked the name Derpy and her portrayal. She wrote a journal about it back in February 2012.

What the... Derp is a slur for people with handicaps? That artist seems to be a bit misguided but I shall try not to judge as I don't know the full story. I thought the word Derp was just something you said when you did something stupid, kind of like shouting Eureka when you have a great idea.

 

I'm completely against Derpy's censorship, it is unnecessary. People just want something to complain about.

I like Derpy/Ditzy. I liked her both fanon and original canon and its a shame that people who want this world so politically correct that they take it out on a cartoon character and at the same time thell scream at people saying "accept me for who I am"

 

Hate is a learned behaviour but so is compassion

 

Now I'm not going to sit here and say we must like everything. There's a lot of things out there that I dislike

 

but we sure could use a lot more giving and carrying about one another even in small ways.

 

Derpy is just a fictional character but she reflects all those things that goes wrong in our lives and shows us that no matter how wall eyed the world we see becomes there is an innate ability within us to keep pressing on with a love for life and good muffins

As others have said you are indeed not the only one, what makes me sad is that many of the people who dislike Derpy the most are some (not all but some) Applejack fans who they feel that Derpy upstaged her. I am saddened because I am a huge fan of both of them and one of the main reasons why I like Derpy is actually one of the same reasons why I like Applejack. Because they both as characters give a positive message that you have to be honest and true to yourself albeit in different ways. Derpy as a character does this by showing that it is okay to be different, that even those who are different are still important and should be treated with dignity and respect. And Applejack does this by showing that being honest is more than just about not telling lies, but that it is also about being true to your values and principles even when it is hard.

 

Alot of people like Derpy because they like the idea of Derpy, they like the idea of a character who in a society that otherwise encourages conformity a character who is different. People who are disabled or even just seen as different for other reasons like Derpy because they understand what it is like to be misunderstood and recognize the potential a character like Derpy has to contribute to making things better for people like that. As someone who grew up with Autism I know how damaging misconceptions can be and how hard it is to get people to understand so in large part because of that I identify very strongly with Derpy. Yes despite this these people who complained didn't even bother to listen to me or anyone else before claiming to speak for us which I think I have ever right to be pissed off about.

Well i'm sure your not the only one to dislike her, of course I really don't dislike anypony in the show, including derpy, so honestly she doesn't bother me, sure I don't adore her, but shes cool.

 

I think the background ponies are all really made by the fandom, and all the art and animations and music and backstory created by them, otherwise they're not all that appealing really.

 

I think the reason why Derpy is widely adored is because she was one of the first times hasbro recognized the brony fandom and their fan given name of "Derpy" by giving her the speaking role she had in last roundup.

 

Not all shows recognize the fandom or even care about it, so I guess it was a nice thing to have, which is why shes liked overall.

 

I personally have no reason to hate or dislike her, I like her as I like the other ponies in the show, but your free to have your opinion, if you dislike her its cool with me .
