The True Purpose of the Wonderbolts

Flying teams like the Wonderbolts appear to be some sort of military/disaster relief teams that also does air shows and races and stuff like a sports team.

 

Ive been thinking about that and come up with a theory about it.

 

What if the reason that institution exists is that the Pegasi used to be a warrior society (In pre-equestria days), so maybe the Pegasi flying teams are a volunteer force that are supposed to defend Equestria and other duties that have become more like sports teams in modern days. Like, if in the early days of Equestria, the Pegasi society as a whole was expected to be warriors and group into flying teams but as time went on they changed as Pegasi society evolved.

Ehh, I don't know. I haven't watched every episode, but from what I understand the Wonderbolts are mainly an airshow talent. I mean, in Secret of my Excess they showed up to save the town, but then how come they haven't done that a thousand other times? 

 

I guess I just need to watch all the episodes. That would certainly back up my argument. xD

I think the purpose of the Wonderbolts is to have a role model for Rainbow Dash so, she could defy the odds and finally achieve her dream on becoming a Wonderbolt.  I really don't know, I guess Equestria needed the best flyers so they had the Wonderbolts.

I always saw them to be something similar to the Snowbirds, a Royal Canadian Air Force Demonstration Squadron, used to showcase the amount of skill and professionalism that goes into being a skilled flier, nothing more and nothing less. Unless you want to get at it from just storyline perspective, and then their entire purpose is just to be RD's long term goal.

It would certainly explain Spitfire's attitide during Rainbow Dash's training, but I don't think they were intended to be a fighting force. Perhaps they could save the day once in a while, but that's only because they're good at flying, not because it's their duty.
