What's up, y'all? This is a fanfic which I've been thinking about doing for a while now. It deals with a young stallion trying to find the true meaning of not only football, but friendship and about his teammates. Hope you enjoy. I'll post the second chapter soon.

“You’re a loser who will never amount to anything in life!” Those words just kept playing in my head over and over again.

It was raining rather hard. It was also getting stormy. I have sat in the rain for a good 2 hours now. Never have I felt so worthless in my life.

It wasn’t so much the words that affected me, but rather the pony who said it to me. We knew very little about each other, but I have always looked up to her in a curious and keen way. I guess you could say I have had a crush on her, but that is not the point. She is supposed to be supporting towards everypony. Well, everypony except me, that is. This sudden realization brought forth a sense of self loathing in me which I have never experienced before.

“I… really CAN’T do anything right...”, I said to myself. “All the guys at school are right… I really am a nobody…”

Present day

I lay on my couch, watching television and thinking about my rather dull past. Today was going to be an interesting day.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Silver Speed. I am 23 years old. My favorite color is blue and my favorite food is fried grass.

People told me I couldn’t do it. People told me I wasn’t good. Not at life, nor good at my current profession. Heck, the pony I liked back in high school also told me I won’t amount to anything in life. For a while, I believed them. For a while, I always felt the urge to cry and give up. But then, it hit me. If you allow yourself to fall flat on your face, people will never respect you. People may make fun of you, call you names, and taunt your game, but if you never try, you will never know.

My hard work and determination payed off, 7 years after my fateful incident. I am now a professional football player for the Manehattan Magic in the National Pony Football League (NPFL). I play as cornerback.

I take my profession very seriously. I’m not the kind of stallion you would want to face, because I will destroy you on the field. I will hit you so hard that you will wish you’d never have to go up against me again. Especially if you’re a wide receiver. And, I don’t need teammates to tell me what I can do right and what I can’t do right. I’m perfectly capable of winning games for the team on my own. In fact, to be quite honest, we’re 13-3 and the top seed in the playoffs for a reason. Mostly all because of my play. Call me a rookie, but I sure as hell don’t play like one. I led the league in interceptions with 7, and deflected about 24 of them. And whenever the guy that I’m supposed to cover catches a pass… well, it’s usually lights out for him.

And yet… some things never really feel right. I’ve finally made it to the NPFL, and that I’ve done so many things in the league already, but it just feels weird… maybe it’s because of my past, since I’ve never really known my parents and that other foals would always taunt me, and not to mention the fact that somepony I liked was harsh towards me, all those years ago. I’ve never really gotten attached to anyone in my life, save about 1 or 2 people besides my aunt and uncle whom I lived with when my parents died off. Oh well… it’s probably nothing. That was a long time ago. I’m better than that now.

I flipped through the channels until I found the NPFL Network channel. Since it was playoff time, and that ponies usually watch more of the playoffs than the regular season, the Network decided to show a program that explains the basics of the game of football.

The program aired for a good hour until it was finally over. In summary, the quarterback is the one that throws the ball and controls the offense, and the wide receivers are the ones who are supposed to catch the ball for yards and/or touchdowns. Each possession of the ball is called a drive, in which a drive ends if the offensive team fails to gain a first down. You score when you get a touchdown, which is worth 7 points, or kick a field goal, which is worth 3 points. On defense… well, they’re there to stop the offense from gaining all those yards and to prevent touchdowns. Pretty easy stuff to learn, huh? Not so easy when you actually start playing the game. No siree, bob.

“Good stuff to rememeber,” I muttered. “Who knows, maybe the other team will forget some of these fundamentals and it’ll end up biting them in the flank later on.”

And with that, I headed out to the stadium, as the game would begin soon.
