If the princesses weren't "Princesses"?

As in the Alicorns. What if they chose not to live a life of royalty, but live like just like everyone else? Or something like the Alicorns chose to be antisocial and distance themselves from everyone, and live in dangerous places like the Ever Free Forest?

Well, I guess they wouldn't be princesses anymore. And what about the other Ponies? They would have a totally different government maybe?

It might be "better" since there would be pretty much zero chance of Luna ever becoming Nightmare Moon. But the Ponies might we weaker without a wise immortal leader like Celestia to guide them perhaps?

I think if they isolated themselves they would still be well respected. They are beings of great power and wisdom and I think ponies might still try to look to them for guidance and in great times of need. Instead of Princesses they would be mysterious helpers of society. Well in most cases anyway...

We already know what would happen, I think Hearth Warming's Eve explains it nicely. The ponies would split into the three tribes and each race would take over its respective responsibility. Understanding friendship better, and knowing what happened before, there would likely be a government set up to ensure peace and over-all cooperation. Said government would consist of equal numbers of representatives from each race forming an odd numbered council (3,9,15...), which would prevent deadlocks. Representatives would be decided based on cutie mark or a fair election (or a combination).

As for Alicorns, we are assuming they want nothing to do with pony society. The Everfree Forest would become off limits, and the Alicorns would likely have a means of scaring off intruders. They would basically become elves, magical beings who keep to themselves and only act if they are threatened. Thus, Alicorns would help with natural disasters and rogue draconequusi, but only because these things affect them as well.

I enjoy both of the above scenarios and one is just as likely as the other.

The first person claims that it could still be a peaceful society, perhaps with a democratically elected official ruling the different parts of Equestria. Makes me wonder, though, if men would become the main rulers and women, particularly the alicorns, would become the mysterious helpers. Having it happen this way could make Equestria look a little more like Lord of the Rings.

The second interpretation is more dystopian, and generally sees the alicorns not being the rulers of Equestria as a bad thing. The alicorns would be feared and respected, but for the wrong reasons. Instead of being respected as the benevolent and wise rulers of Equestria who strive to hold harmony and love as the standard, they allow for chaos to happen and selfishly let the world around them die so long as their own little world does not die with it.

Well I think at first Celestia and Luna were already isolated from everyone. They most likely lived in that Castle the mane 6 found the elements. Celestia and Luna guarded them until they left to help the ponies seal away Discord.

The ponies would most likely be ruled by 3 elders of each tribe and live in just one area and not have many towns like they do now.

My best guess is that Celestia and Luna were born unicorns and became alicorns later, when they understood sisterhood to the greatest degree.

"But Lauren Faust said that they were born alicorns!"

Lauren also intended Princess Cadence to be a unicorn, and you know how that worked out.  Until it is made clear in the show or even the comic books, we can speculate whatever we want.  Lauren's word does carry weight, but it is not canon.  Besides, there is a line in the show that contradicts Lauren's statement:

"The elder sister used her unicorn powers to raise the Sun at dawn."

Narrator, Friendship is Magic part 1

If she was born an alicorn, why would those be referred to as "unicorn powers"?
