Your Opinion on Spike

Recommended Posts

So, I'm sure all of us know who Spike is He's the loveable baby dragon and Twilight's No. 1 assistant. His favourite food to eat is gems and he has a crush on Rarity.

What's your overall opinion about him ?

Do prefer him in EG or MLP ?

I personally really like Spike as a character in MLP and EG though I think he was a lot cooler in Equestria Girls.

I think Spike is a great addition to the show and helps in having a diverse cast of characters. Even if episodes which focus on him are not always the best I find him an interesting and fun and his humor is always spot on :D. I hope to learn a little more about his back story in the coming season. I prefer "Dragon Spike" to "Dog Spike" for the simply reason that I find dragons way cooler than dogs having hands and breathing fire sure beats barking B) .

I love Spike as a character. He's kinda like the nerdy guy who's always on the "in" for pop culture and references it whether people get it or not. He's also highly attentive and I'm sure he could make an excellent career for himself as a secretary or even something more though I suppose because of his long life as a dragon he'll be Twilight's assistant for a long time if she lives as long as Celestia and Luna.

I honestly don't know if it's an Alicorn trait to live long or not. It works for Celestia and Luna but characters like Umbra are not Alicorns (as far as I recall, only saw those episodes once) and the only other Alicorns are Chrysalis (kinda) and Cadence and Cadence is too young to know if it's an Alicorn trait. Chrysalis herself is a bit of a special case as she seems to be something of another race entirely.

But I digress.

Do I dare to say it? Hm, I think so...

sticker,375x360.u2.pngSpike is awesome!

As Twilight Sparkle's No.1 assistant and the only male main character, his friendly yet sometimes sarcastic character is a perfect addition to the cast. While more than just well written in Equestria Girls as a character, I don't think that being a dog there was living up to his personality and the way he was shown in several episodes. His further development is one of the things I'm most excited about to see in future episodes. Especially how his crush on Rarity will turn out one day.

The relationship between Spike and Twilight is one of my favourite things in the show, so yes I do like Spike a lot.

I also like how he serves as the voice of reason most of the time, especially in Equestria Girls. He's the kind of guy you'd go and have a beer with.. Despite him being a baby dragon.

I keep on coming to these kinds of threads ready to voice my opinion just to see that someone has voiced it for me almost word for freaking word....

So, um, yeah,  I second this -_-

Sorry for that  :( . If it's any comfort this happens to me a lot too. At least we have the same opinion right :D ?

I forgot to mention that I am actually interested to see where Spike's crush on Rarity develops. I my opinion shifted on this recently because before I would have really liked to see them keep this a running joke and nothing more. Now I'm not so sure. I still can't see them as a couple and I'm don't think Hasbro would allow something like that but who knows what will happen...

I like and enjoy Spike, but as somepony mentioned above when he's focused on the episode tends to suffer. Now the way they wrote him in EG was top notch, and really showcased why he's Twilight's #1 assistant.

Spike is a dragon. Automatically cool in my opinion. I quite like him as a character in both MLP and EG, but I like him better as a dragon than a dog. He is always ready to help someone when they need it and he is Twilight's #1 assistant. Which by the way, I like that title for him.

Oh, Spike The Poor Sucker.

We are a generation of men raised by women, I wonder if another woman is what we need - Tyler Durden.

This quote here is exactly about Spike.

He is a dragon - but he isn't. Biologically he is, - but mentally he is a pony. He was raised by ponies. Female ponies, especially, by his ersatz-mom Twilight Sparkle. That means, he has got no fitting role model.

Spike has already realised his situation. And he has already explored both options he had: to grow up as a dragon (Secret of my Excess) and to learn how to be a dragon (Dragon Quest). Naturally, both options didn't fit him.

So, Spike is stuck. Stuck in being a baby dragon. Stuck in following ponies, who will never see him as anything more than a cute little baby dragon.

If he don't get turned to a real pony, he has no future.

Honestly I couldn't care less about him. He fills his purpose as Twilight's assistant/little brother, but I honestly don't think he deserves the amount of episodes he has gotten. He has had approximately 4 "Spike centered episodes" and I have not really liked any of those episodes. They were more or less just annoying episodes that made me appreciate the ones that didn't have him as the main character.  I like him how he is in the majority of the episodes where he is more or less a talking background piece and sometimes the voice of reason.

He's less of a dick in Equestria Girls, so I think I like EQG's version of him better.

He's one of the more, "eh" characters to me. He has managed to make me angry on multiple occasions...Hurricane Fluttershy, Winter Wrap Up, and many more. I don't really like him, but I don't hate him.

He can be cute though...

No need to apologise, it's always awesome to be around like-minded individuals!  I too am interested in seeing how their 'relationship' progresses.  I think that eventually he'll just have to get over her because, like you said, that couple really just doesn't work :P

Spike is great. I've always liked his character. He gets way too much flak from some bronies, and the writers aren't really sure what to do with him yet, but he has a really important role in the show. He's helped define Twilight's character from day one--and no wonder, since she literally hatched him.

Spike is my favorite character in the show so naturally I find him to be an extremely great character.

I love everything about him, he's funny, snarky, helpful, sweet, kind and caring. If you look closely he kind of represents all the elements of harmony which is something I found to be odd.

Not to mention Spike being a dragon makes his dynamic great because dragons aren't really shown to be the nicest creatures in Equestria. I like to see how Spike goes on and gains and losses as he changes that image of dragons. I really love him because he is the most relatable to me.

His crush on Rarity is debatable but I love his relationship with Twilight. You could call her his mother in a sense.

To be honest I didn't really like Spike at all when I first saw him, although I liked the fact that he was a dragon (you know...because guys are usually into badass things like that x3). I just didn't really see him as an important character until later on when the writers decided to make episodes focused on Spike. I kind of liked it, it was different and I learnt things that I didn't expect from him, like growing into a gigantic greedy dragon. Eventually I grew attached to him and liked him as a main character instead of a 'background character'.

Man, I never thought about it like that... so the question is, if Twilight can become an Alicorn, can Spike become a pony?  Or is that too much?

To be honest, I really fail to see any connection between these two events.

In the world of magic everything can heppen, if writers decide it will be good for the story. Maybe, Spike can be harmonized (since he obviously needs it).

Well, okay, yeah it's a bit of a jump, but it is still kind of a species change, which is what I was getting at...  And yeah, literally anything could happen, haha!

Actually, it's not.

If two creatures can breed with each other and produce fertile offsprings - they belong to the same specie (by Linnaean definition).

And, as we have seen in "Baby Cakes", three pony races can. So, we have no reason to consider alicorns to be another species.

Yeah, what you were saying above there about magic and anything can happen?  Haha!  Man, I never really thought about how all that worked (in the "Baby Cakes" episode that is).  Ah well.... surely with that aside you still knew what I was trying to say...
