Why is there a castle in the Everfree Forest anyway?

I rewatched the beginning of the Season 1 and this is now bugging me.

Why is there an abandoned castle in the Everfree Forest??

The castle was apparently owned by both Luna and Celestia a thousand years ago but they moved away for some reason. Why?

And how come there's no sign of a old settlement if the princesses did live there? The current castle is surrounded by the bustling Canterlot but according to Granny Smith's flashback, the surrounding area of the Everfree Forest was clearly unhabitated and Celestia at the time was already well established in Canterlot.

What happened???

Because of Luna's rebellion. It happened waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before Ponyville was founded

You still would have had signs of a settlement. Why? Because the castle still exists!! No one can make a castle for the leaders of their country and NOT have any boost in population within the surrounding area as a result. Not possible. Something happened to that population that the land ended up being so barren, it was given away under a princess's whim a thousand years later.

1000 years would be sufficient to wipe out most signs of a former settlement, particularly one which was constructed mostly out of wood. I suspect that the fighting between Celestia and Luna before she was sent off to the Moon may have destroyed most of the surroundings. Ponies fled and the land was reclaimed by the forest. If the buildings were made of wood, they would have rotted long before even Granny Smith was born. I think the castle was the only stone building in the former capital.

The castle was the main military base of Princess Luna's rebellion. Explains why the Elements of Harmony are there. Princess Celestia probably placed them there after Luna was sent to the Moon. Also explains why Nightmare Moon knows the territory well enough to try and kill/tempt the Mane 6 with perfect accuracy on where they're going to be.

Also explains WHY THERE'S A CASTLE IN THE MOST DANGEROUS PLACE IN EQUESTRIA.

actually Nightmare moon was hiding behind the window and she heard of where the elements were at....

but I guess Celestia just decided to move away when she defeated her sister and I guess forgot the elements that saVED EQUESTRIA, on the castle (I think she has a bad habit of leaving things un-guarded)

This may sound like a craze theory but what if the castle was moved by something, like a constellation monster (ursa major, minor, ects.) or dragons summoned by Nightmare moon before she was punished by her sister, and that piece of the castle which was probably somewhere in Celestia's garden or somewhere outside the castle, was left behind. I dunno, it's just a theory I guess.

She and her sister lost the connection to the Elements when they fought each other. The Elements became useless relics until they were found by the Mane 6. I think Celestia used up the remaining power available to her in the Elements to banish Luna and then they no longer held any power (for her).

Actually, this is explained in the show. In S1, you see the Elements being useless relics when they are found (Luna didn't even attempt to use them) until reactivated by the power of friendship (Mare 6). In S2, Celestia says both her and Luna have lost the connection to the Elements of Harmony, which likely happened just after Luna's banishment since neither Celestia nor Luna even attempted to use the Elements when Luna returned.

I dunno, let's say, the Castle was built purposedly to guard the elements of harmony soon after Nightmare Moon was banished. It was built within the depths of the forest so nopony could reach it easily, or simply at all, must have been much more guarded at first.

Or you could say the castle was built before the Everfree Forest existed, and then some evil magic arose, and thus the princesess had to move and build a new castle, and that's how Canterlot was founded.

I hope we can get to know more about Equestrian history in the future

As one or two people above said, it makes sense that the castle in the forest could have been Celestia and Luna's original castle, but was destroyed in their fight. If there was a settlement around the castle, it was also probably destroyed in the battle. After this, Celestia saw that the area was too dangerous for her subjects anyway because the forest was growing out of control and the monsters were getting closer and closer. She decided that a castle and city on a mountain was a safer location(plus nothing says swag like a mountain side castle and we all know Celestia has swag).

Or the fight between Celestia and Luna was so epic, it broke the balance of magic and harmony in the surrounding area so badly that it RESULTED in creating the Everfree Forest which hasn't recovered to this very day. That would explain why only the castle remains...

That is a possible solution, Windy. All that left over disharmony caused unnatural growth speed in the forest and attracted monsters from all over Equestria.

My theory is that that is the old castle that Celestia and Luna used to live in a thousand years ago, and the Everfree forest then wasn't like it was today, but rather a peaceful forest. After Celestia banished Luna to the moon, she probably decided to relocate it and start anew, aka present day Canterlot (perhaps the old castle had too many painful memories of her sister and she couldn't bare it). She left the elements of harmony behind to keep them safe. As years passed the old castle crumbled, and the Everfree forest grew and became wild and untamed.

I like your theory on that better.

Yes, I was about to say that we're all making the assumption the Everfree was always there, always wild and chaotic. Perhaps it wasn't. Perhaps at the time the Sisters lived in the castle, it was calm, peaceful. The old capital may have been located there, only to be taken over by Nightmare Moon upon Princess Luna's transformation. Nightmare Moon might have warped and twisted the entire region into the Everfree today, requiring that the old castle be abandoned and a new castle established in Canterlot. Or possibly an old castle taken over and expanded in Canterlot.

I agree that during the fight between Luna and Celestia their original castle was destroyed and so Celestia rebuilt elsewhere, also ponies are afraid to venture into the Everfree forest and Celestia seem to like to enjoy knowing her subjects. It would also explain why the elements if harmony were there. ~
