So I was planning on making a game called Equestrian Dance Party have some experience with Game Maker and was wondering if there was anything else out there that is better than game maker but free for me to use.

There are many "better" ways to make a game than game maker, but other ways are harder, I like using the XNA extension for Microsoft Visual Studio, XNA is a language based on C and is designed fir windows and Xbox games. You could also use the Unity engine. Both of these will require you to learn programming languages though.

Programing languages aren't going to be a problem for me its whether or not I will be able to use the program or not

and is it free

Unity is one of the best - http://unity3d.com/unity

You pay for "Assets" such as 3d characters, but there are free ones available and around the internet, you would also have to pay if you intended to sell the games.

XNA is microsoft's stab at it and my personal favorite - http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=23714

You pay if you sell your games, check the requirements carefully, you need Visual Studio to install it.

I've been digging around and Stencyl looks alright. http://www.stencyl.com/

Again its one that you pay if you intend to sell your games.

Ill probably end up using unity  I have no intention on selling the game  and no need for 3d elements and I am very skeptical about anything Microsoft does and Ill look into stencyl I just need something that I can use to make a game inspired by dance dance revolution but with pony music
