Spelling - Night Mare Moon or Nightmare Moon?

If we take a look at the IMDB episode synopsis list, the following is quoted for season 1 episode 2:

To stop Nightmare Moon, Twilight Sparkle, Spike and some locals must find the Elements of Harmony.

Additionally, if we refer to the synopsis posted on Wikipedia, we're met with this description:

"Nightmare Moon", the pony described by the legends Twilight Sparkle had discovered, has returned from her banishment, and Princess Celestia does not attend the celebration. However, Twilight Sparkle and the other ponies she befriended learn of the "Elements of Harmony", a set of 6 artifacts which could help defeat her.

The term 'Nightmare' is also depicted as a single word in the oxford dictionary, and there is currently no pony (which has been given a canon name at least) that has a three word name.

While I personally have no problem using either variant of of her name (particularly the latter if I want to emphasise the play-on words), from what I can gather, Nightmare Moon is probably her canon title, but then again, it still is a little hazy either way.

I never really thought about it, I have used both versions of the word, but I think Nightmare Moon is correct as the great duke pointed out

"Night Mare Moon" would be more appropriate to emphasize the play on words. Her character is fundamentally based upon her being a mare of eternal night rather than necessarily a being which causes bad dreams. The nightmarish aspect of her character is secondary though still crucial.

Personally, I don't mind either rendition; I happen to believe, however, Night Mare Moon is probably the way it should be rendered for the reasons stated briefly above.

While I understand why some might wish to use "Night Mare Moon" to emphasize wordplay...frankly to me it looks horrid compared to the simpler "Nightmare Moon." Since you can pronounce Nightmare Moon with an emphasis on the mare syllable, you can still stress the pun verbally without drawing too much attention to it. After all, the pun is twofold, on both the word mare and the word nightmare, and by changing it to "Night Mare Moon" you strip away the nightmare aspect, which I consider to be by far the more important of the two puns.

Used to be known on here as Kyronea.

Yeah, I agree with the above: "Nightmare Moon" seems much simpler, and oddly more eye-appealing.

Technically in this context, both would be correct though, I can see that. Yet, because most ponies don't have three-word-names, neither do they NORMALLY have Equine related properties as part as their name, I guess Nightmare Moon would gain my support.

Great adventuring for great treasures!....Except when I'm hurt...

Well, this isn't a very scientific way of doing things, but I thought I'd include it here just for completeness sake.

Counting the results of using google search:

  • "Nightmare Moon" - 452,000 results
  • "Night Mare Moon" - 130,000 results
So, according to popular opinion, Nightmare Moon is the right way to go about it. This makes sense though, as Night Mare Moon just seems like a more awkward way to spell out the name.
