Am I late?

Hello Fandom! Not sure this is the right board, kinda just signed up to this website so navigating it better will come eventually. Anyway, I am conflicted and I came here to ask you guys what you think about it. I just joined the fandom about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and I really enjoy it. While i was enjoying this, I noticed a bunch of people saying "the fandom is dying", and that thre's not as much stuff going on as the old days. While I don't beleive that, I did do some more research on the fandom. This led me into reading up on alot of the history of the fandom(and alot of other things like music, fanfics, OC's, 4chan, mlpchan, ponychan, EQD), and i noticed how fun it must've been back when the fandom first sprung up. I feel like I missed so many important times in the fandom, ect... anyway what do you think guys? Did i miss alot? Lastley, hows the journy been for you? Some of you must have some times you recall that were memorable from the past times.

TL/DR: Just joined, feel empty knowing I missed so much, what's your opinion on that, and any fond memories you guys have of this fandom?

I can't help you much here, except to console you on this one fact: whatever the fandom used to be, it's still freaking awesome.  I spend waaaay too much time on these forums, several hours a day.  Also, you might get more responses if you moved this thread to the Welcoming Plaza!  Hope you have as much fun as the rest of us here!

Eh, while you may have missed some parts of the fandom's history, we are still rolling strong and gaining members, trust me you'll see alot of cool events and fun things pop up as the fanbase grows. Just wait untill season 4 starts, then the fun really begins.

So in my opinion, you did miss some things, but alot more epic things are probably going to happen.

Oh, yeah, I didn't think about that.  With Season 4 just on the horizon, there will probably be an outpouring of fandominess (that's a word now)!  Yay, now I'm excited!

All I remember is bronies freaking out about Twilicorn and Equestria girls. And a lot of great animations this summer, bronycon.... But in case you didn't know if you would like to go to a Pony convention, BronyCon (if you live in the east coast) is an awesome option :)

Season four awaits :D

I think most fandoms follow the same pattern that MLP is following now. You have the massive huge initial support, followed by tons of ponies disappearing when they get bored with it all. The disappearances cause a drop in activity and social output, which leads some ponies to think that it was just a short-lived fad. The fanbase is steady at that point, gaining and losing a few ponies at various times, but whenever there's a major new event in the fandom (season 4 in our case), old ponies come back and new ponies show up. Activity picks up for a while, then drops off again, then the doomsayers start again. And so forth...

We've definitely passed the initial enthusiasm and half the old ponies are gone, but the ponies that are left are the ponies that are here to stay.

Yea, I was late too. xD I joined only about 2-3 months ago.

I feel like the fandom is still very strong though. However, I wasn't here "back in the day" so I guess I don't know as well.

You didn't really miss anything special. The fandom isn't dying, there's just a lot of drama and all that; people have been saying it's been dying since forever. And the fanbase keeps growing as far as I can tell.

You don't need to care about where the fandom's heading. All it really is, is people who you can talk about pone with. If you dig up some fan-created stuff that you find interesting, that's cool, but it really doesn't matter if you're one of the first few or the last to get to it.

In any case, glad you found something you like.

First of all, welcome!

As for your question, I joined just over a year ago.  There were a number of people saying that the fandom was dying back then.  This tends to be a fandom that always seems to think that it's dying for one reason or another, so I would recommend not listening to them too much and instead making your own judgments.  Just remember that you are now a part of the reason that the fandom is alive.

That said, I hope that you enjoy your time here!

I can even say this as someone who doesn't plan to watch any newer episodes (because, I humbly admit, I am disappointed in the general writing decisions made of a cartoon for little girls that  I watch). The fandom isn't really dying. There's a lot of jokes in just about any fan culture about how some particular change or corporate action means a series is "ruined forever" when it's usually not the case.

What makes MLP pretty special though, is that even if Hasbro started doing everything to burn the franchise into the ground, fans still create awesome stuff off the basic concept; be it flash animations, comics, drawings, or....*shiver*...fan....fiction.....there's things to like.

Pretty much this. The fandom will be fine... enjoy what you have of it in the here and now.

Personally, I liked coming into the fandom late. I came in March 25th, 2013. Sad that I know the date down to the day. Anyway, I love history, so it was nothing short of amazing, getting to learn about the birth and life of the fandom, the whole 4chan war is very interesting when you look at it from a point of after it happened. When it was going on, it was like an atomic bomb went off in that corner of the internet. Pretty cool to look into. But that's off topic. I can't say I was here from the start, but there have been some good times while I have been here. As far as the fandom dying, I have my doubts. Look around, we have a new season starting up, a new premiere, and new recruits to enlist.

I think we are definitely NOT at one of our "low-points" at the moment.  I joined in November of 2011, and the activity from my point of view has been relatively consistent throughout the years.  Technically, there's actually more of us now than there were back then.  A very small percentage got pissed and left over Twilicorn and that abhorrent movie spinoff (I was almost one of them) but most of us remained strong and are looking forward to another great season.  As for fan-made content, It's arguable that it's more alive than its ever been.

You might be one of the first official "Season 4 bronies," although you technically joined before the launch, so probably not.

You're not too late, grab a seat! :)

As for me, I joined after season two, I still kind of consider myself youngish in that regard. Don't mind the people fearing the end of the fandom, there always seems to be this perpetual fear of some kind. You know, the whole Derpy thing in season 2, Twilight getting wings, season 3 only being 13 episodes, a bad spike episode, etc...

Ignore the fear and panic, there's a whole new season of content ahead. Just enjoy yourself.
