Why is Thanksgiving always skipped over? *rant*

Seriously, I was just thinking about it this morning. Every year, as soon as Halloween ends, all the stores put away the Halloween decorations and immediately start preparing for Christmas. Sometimes, they have christmas stuff out before Halloween is even over. You rarely hear about Thanksgiving, its like its being excluded or marginalized by society.

Yet, most people don't seem to think this is okay. I've talked to a wide variety of people about this, and the prevailing opinion always seems to be that the commercialization of the christmas season, pure greed, and its overshadowing of other holidays is pretty awful. No one wants to work on Black Friday, or Black Thursday as its now being called. People like spending time with their families on Thanksgiving, but christmas always intrudes on it.

So my question is, If its such a hugely common public opinion that Christmas has overstayed its welcome, why does everyone accept it as the status quo? Who is it that's actually making people work on thanksgiving, when most people seem to find it unacceptable? Who ever it is, have they no shame?????

Because about 99.9% of the rest of the world doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving. Simple as that.
It's purely an American holiday, and not everyone is from 'Murikka, ya know.

Because as much as people complain about it, it's easily America's most celebrated holiday.

People are working on Thanksgiving because there's a demand to get that fast sale out first, as now's the beginning of the biggest consumer period of our year.

And as for shame?  If Wal-Mart is going to stay open, everyone else is going to try to be to compete.  Big chains that close on Thanksgiving are the exception, not the rule.

I'm aware that Thanksgiving is an American holiday, geez. I'm not all " hurr durr murikka is best contry". But its still something I want to discuss with those who do actually celebrate it. (especially since about half of the people in these forums are from north america). Why would you want to come here and reply to this topic about an American holiday if you're not American? Just skip it.

All of the huge companies have to deal with the supply & demand factor especially on an American holiday but, others prefer not to celebrate Thanksgiving. People that work on Thanksgiving don't exactly enjoy the experience of dealing with huge crowds of costumers, while costumers have to get through huge crowds to buy food for Thanksgiving. Defend it, if you want.

Hmm. Good point. Thanksgiving also has its issues with crowds, but for the most part they're customer inflicted. Its not like the stores are creating artificial demand by shoving midnight food deals in our faces and trying to get us to buy their stuff on halloween, we are the ones creating our own pre-thanksgiving chaos because there is a natural demand for the food. Its also easier to avoid the crowds if you do the food shopping earlier on.

Customers always cause chaos, no matter what holiday we celebrate or anything that involves getting great deals of merchandise it shows that people could at least do their planning beforehand like you stated. Good point.

Christmas gets shoved in our faces so early because it's a commercial holiday. Businesses generally don't have to advertise thanksgiving, you're either not going to celebrate it, or buy the food regardless of advertisement. So they know to start Christmas ads early, because Thanksgiving isn't really advertise-able. But with all the ads for Christmas stuff, and all the sales, they can create a demand that otherwise might not be quite as high. But, what are you gonna do about it? People are gonna buy things for Christmas, not as an act of generosity, but because it's become expected. And they're going to shop when it's cheapest, even if it means they have to deal with crowds. Black Friday also exists because most people get that day off, so thy can shop that day. Sorry if I kinda went on a tangent there.

As for the working on holidays, It's because large companies/corporations don't view their workers as people. They care about making money, it doesn't matter to them whether or not you have to work on a holiday. It isn't any one person, and that's why it can be so unfeeling. Because it's the company as a whole making the decision.

Honestly, if Christmas could overshadow Halloween as well, that would be nice. Not really fond of that holiday and what it's all about.

Honestly, I'm not really concerned about all of this consumerism stuff, but the fact that Black Friday has moved well into Thanksgiving, and the stores somehow still call them "Black Friday" deals does bother me. It bothered me that I didn't get any resemblance of a Thanksgiving, because between my normal Wednesday shift and the "Black Friday" shift, I only had a small number of hours, and I was supposed to be sleeping during that time.

Black Friday needs to go back to being on Black Friday. Even if it's midnight, I don't care.

Whatever.  I'm spending the entire weekend in my studio, and I could give two shits about Wal-Mart or Best Buy or mall riots or whatever dumb-fuckery the rest of the country is doing.  Gotta finish a hard rock song and video in time for the upcoming Scootaloo episode.

It is because though alot of people complain about it and rightfully so there are still plenty of people that buy right into hook, line and sinker. Black Friday has been a thing for quite some time but it seems like it just keeps getting worse and worse the fact that so many stores are now having "Black Friday" deals on Thanksgiving day really says it all so the whole early Christmas thing is just a natural extension of that. All these corporations know that despite all the complaints that people will still burst down the doors, trample fight and and claw their way into getting what sort of "deals" they have going on and the earlier they start advertising the more time they have to build up that anticipation that leads to the kind of rampant consumerism we see every year. I am all for good deals and everything but at some point we have to ask ourselves are we really celebrating Christmas or just some cheap commercialized shell of a holiday that passes for Christmas?

That's a great answer.

I've just always wondered why this stuff continues to get worse even though public opinion against it is increasing. Almost everyone i know shares the same negative opinion about this sort of thing. Truth is that they will continue to shove it down our throats and there will always be that group of people who fall for it.

I'm probably super biased, but Christmas coming early doesn't bother me at all. I, personally, hate Thanksgiving; I think it's a disgusting excuse of a holiday. I don't really like celebrating the rape and murder of innocent indigenous people, but some do, and I understand that. But that's a rant for another time.

Christmas time just puts people in a better mood, and I love the spirit some people have only around December, it's wonderful.

As for merchants, yeah, it sucks that they shove Christmas down everyone's throats, but consumers are buying it. If they weren't, it wouldn't be out yet. Businesses have to appeal to their buyers and sell the things people want to buy.

But all in all I say: Move over Thanksgiving! Christmas is Coming!
