request Trouble making a OC

I've seen a lot of ponies around here have an OC. I can't see how anypony could be more radical, cool, or awesome than Rainbow Dash. Any tips on making an OC? Does it have to be separate from the mane six, or can they be relatives? I don't even know! Halp!

Yes, rainbow dash is awesome, but creating an OC is all about preference and acknowledgement.

 

Basing it out of a character entirely is unoriginal, just some tiny or barely noticeable parts are better.

 

For color, try some of your favorite colors, find which ones work well with each other and get to it.

Absolutely! Try NOT to make it related to the Mane Six or any canon character, but if you want to, try making it the best it can be. Make it not full of eyeblinding colors, like Neon Yellow or something like that, make the colors very gentle. Alicorns are not often respected in the brony community, so don't make an alicorn. Don't make it perfect or a Mary Sue, make it at LEAST have ONE Negative. But not too many, too many negatives can lead to a different type of Mary Sue.

Well, I personally think it's best for people to keep their OC's apart from the Mane 6, or any other major character in the show. At least, in a significant way. 

Another tip for you would be to keep your OC unique. Don't use a perfect copy of Fluttershy's personality for your OC, or don't make your OC look exactly like Rainbow Dash. That's kinda boring, and I think you should make your OC your own.

 

One other thing; I think normal color schemes tend to work best, and I suggest staying away from weird rainbow coloring, pure black and red coloring, etc. 

 

Finally, to make an OC; you can either draw it yourself (unlimited possibilities, but some drawing skill would probably be helpful), or you go use an online pony OC creator. Here are some links to all the ones I know of:

This is where you're going wrong. Why do they need to be better, or even 'as good as' as RD? You're making a character, not an accessory: the best characters aren't 'the fastest', 'the smartest' or 'the coolest', they're interesting.

 

Thats just my opinion of course, but as a general guide, this is a useful read:

Pick something unusual or special about your character - just one or two things, and then try to avoid the things on that page and you'll have an much more interesting character than anything you'll make by just pouring 'cool' traits into a blender - I guarantee it.

Thanks for all your help, I have my pony, but now the hard part is making a description and a name for her 

I had a thought of a pony that is like corrupt, and is evil and stuff but like most things, I suck at writing character descriptions. Except apparently the background I made and my avatar I made, I got alot of compliments on those.
