Judging by what the Elements did to Sunset Shimmer, they basically show someone the light of friendship, which can have different effects. For Sunset Shimmer and Luna, it made them realize how horrible they were acting whereas with Discord, Discord is too rooted in his ways to care and so just gets turned to stone

All right, let's look at the facts.  Celestia has done some morally questionable things.  Leaving her dying pet alone, not lifting a hoof to help Twilight and co against Discord, taking Discord in Ponyville then just leaving, not doing anything to stop Ahuizotl, and let's not forget this little gem:

 

Celestia clearly has some...problems.

Luna didn't attempt genocide, Nightmare Moon did. Despite similarities, Luna and Nightmare Moon are two different characters.

 

Sure, Luna got a little jealous before Nightmare Moon took her over, but I mean, wouldn't you? Every night, she would put the moon and the stars up. However, the other ponies were all asleep and couldn't admire her beautiful night. Then they'd get up in the morning and play in Celestia's sunlight. I know I'd get a little fed up after a while.

 

Celestia, not wanting to deal with Luna, sent her to the moon for a thousand years. I mean geez, who does that?

 

Celestia always leaves the mane 6 to deal with her problems, as shown when Nightmare Moon returns! Celestia doesn't want to deal with the thing that's possessing her own sister, and, to be honest, Celestia doesn't really want to deal with her problems in the first place. I understand that this was required for plot development, but it does make Celestia look like a tyrant and it makes her appear to be in the wrong. 

 

I think that Luna is right, and that Celestia is most definitely in the wrong. I'm not going to call Celestia a tyrant, but it certainly looks that way.

Celestia was crying as she sent Luna to the Moon. You said it yourself, Nightmare Moon was different from Luna. What else could Celestia have done? She wasn't willing to fight Nightmare Moon because it was still her sister in some way and there was no other option but to banish her. 

 

Celestia was banished to the Sun when Nightmare Moon returned, she could do very little. Tell, me how many times has Luna helped the Mane 6? She has never helped the because she's quite literally sleeping on the job. At least Celestia helped Twilight out of depression, tried to fight Chrysalis, and was willing to trust Twilight's judgement.

I find it amusing that people have a tendency to draw in Celestia when they are discussing Luna. It's not her conflict with her sister that should define Luna. Well, actually, I think that they are their best when they are together, but it seems that people just want there to be a rift between them that just doesn't exist in the show. It's always the same problem: we don't know how they interact with one another, so the fandom keeps creating stuff based on a few seconds of measly interaction.

The show just needs to address this, but the writers just ignore it. There should be a second throne in Canterlot Palace's throne room, just like in the old castle, or a second throne room. And I'm going to worship the writers that do two things:

 

1) Develop Celestia so that that we can see that she actually does ANYTHING, that is close to Luna's dreamwalk, so that they SEEM like they are equals.

 

2) Show that they either decide stuff together OR that Celestia rules over the day and Luna rules over the night, as Luna's comic implies.

 

There has been a little scene from the premiere that implied how much Celestia suffered for banishing Nightmare Moon and losing Luna in the process, but there needs to be more. Show some bonding between the two. Show that ponies now respect and love Luna. The way the fandom portraits Luna as an "artist", making beautiful nights is just perfect for that and show that Celestia admires her work and perhaps never could get it right when she was doing it.

 

Personally, I loved the idea of Celestia as some sort of overseeing deity above Equestria and making sure that everything was okay, but Luna needs to be there with her, ad she doesn't need to lose her awkwardness with modern society for that.

 

For the love of the Royal Pony Sisters, let them be diarchs instead of Princess Number One and Princess Number Two.

Luna likes sleeping somewhere else if "Canterlot Wedding" is any indication. As for Celestia, we saw her fight Chrysalis and it is heavily implied that she is the stronger of the royal sisters.

That is my point. We assume this stuff. We never see it.

Why in hell would Luna sleep somewhere else though? Canterlot is their "seat of power", it's where the royal court is, because Celestia lives there and has been living for 1000 years (again, it's an assumption... We don't know that she lived there since they wrecked their old castle). The point is: the nobility that accompanies them is there. I don't think that Luna would be isolating herself again. Unless there is some other place where Luna has her own entourage and her own palace. But why would she be coming back to Canterlot then? It's more likely that Ms. McCarthy just kept Luna out of the story because she'd complicate stuff. But I'd rather see them both lose to Chrysalis' love-fueled overdrive mode than have Luna be ignored for the whole of the episode instead of just appearing a couple of times to show that she exists.

 

Anyways... You may be right that Celestia is stronger, because Chrysalis uses her as standard of power, since she says she ca defeat "even" Celestia. But this is not a problem to me: I couldn't care less which one of them is a stronger magic-user, if they have the same level of authority, political power. Personally, I think it would be nicer if Luna actually was as stronger spellcaster than Celestia: thematically, the moon is way more connected to magic than the sun.

Usually the Sun is portrayed as more powerful due to size but it doesn't really matter and I see your point.

 

Whatever the case maybe, Celestia isn't too far ahead of Luna power wise, the gap is small.

That's true.

And I suppose that this wouldn't be bad if Luna is living elsewhere. I'd just find it weird. But hey... This is just my personal opinion, and the way the show is going I wouldn't be surprised if next episode they told me that Celestia can breath inside a cake and that Luna plays videogames...

2. It would have been more productive to go there herself.  She couldn't be certain that Twilight would get the letters in time.

Why do people love Luna love so much? I don't mean her character, that's a matter of opinion and I actually like Luna's personality, I mean why the fans constantly paint her as the better of the royal sisters while Celestia is a tyrant. 

 

Let's look at their canon feats

 

Luna: Attempted Genocide

Was upset because ponies slept

 

Celestia: Refused to fight Nightmare Moon even when it was clear that Nightmare Moon wasn't her sister

Didn't bust out the Elements until she had no choice

 

Now, if you like Luna, that's fine, I like her too. My problem lies in those who justify her actions and glorify her as only misunderstood and that Celestia was evil. 

 

So yeah, discuss what you think of Luna's actions and her fanbase's reaction to them

 

Because hating Celestia and loving Luna helps propagate the fandom's idiotic Trollestia meme.

Celestia is shown on the show more. It paint the picture that she much be supreme ruler, but that is not completely true as Luna has about the same amount of power in the concept of ruling.

That wasn't me getting all defensive, I was debating. 

 

1. Why would Celestia need to explain it's a phoenix? No one asked. She couldn't have expected Fluttershy of all people to steal it

2. Remember how the Sun and Moon were dancing in the sky? Discord easily overpowered her without a hint of strain, her only option was to be stealthy

3. Yes, I do. Discord was warping an entire town with no strain. Celestia's best blasts can barely destroy pillars. Her being there would do little since she can't do anything to Discord, at all. He is on a different level from her. 

4. I'm calling bull on this, what we see in the show>author's word. Celestia doesn't know everything, she had to be outright told that the Crystal Empire had returned and had no clue that Discord had stolen the Elements from her. 

5. Let's analyze Celestia's thinking. 

Rainbow and AJ won't want to go to some stuffy party

Pinkie won't like such a formal party

Fluttershy doesn't like crowds

Spike thinks it's lame

Rarity might want to come to see royalty and Twilight might want to come see her old home

 

There were only two people Celestia could have anticipated to want to go, the rest of them seem like they wouldn't care.

Celestia isn't perfect, not by any means. She failed to notice Chrysalis right under her nose and underestimated Discord's planning skills. What I'm arguing is that she is not a tyrant and that if she is, Luna is just as bad.

Celestia is thought to be at fault simply because she acts too perfect and never admits when she's wrong and some may use the horrible expression Mary Sue. This fandom is almost allergic to characters like that even when they aren't really that at all.

Something need not be true to be popular, especially in this fandom. I personally hate the term "Mary Sue" and would never use it, but Cadence, I guess, is too vacuous to be one. I have no problem with Celestia, but hating her is like the thing to do for certain Bronies.

It's just lack of proper development. I guess that the people that like Celestia see that the problem is more with the writers than with the character. I mean, every "Celestia fan" will tell you that the problem is that the stuff she does happens off the screen because she is not the focus of the show.

Since Princess Luna is my favorite character in the entire show I'll answer this thread.

Luna governs the moon and the night.

I've always had an affinity for the moon and the night. I'm a huge nightowl, love staying up late and going for walks in the wee hours, and the night is filled with dazzling stars dancing in the abyss. The moon has always amazed and fascinated me, both its positives (romance) and its negatives (insanity). So any character who is associated with these things will always win favor with me and for Friendship Is Magic, that role goes to Luna.

 

Luna is a heroine.

In the time before Friendship Is Magic, she and Celestia defeated Discord using the Elements Of Harmony. She was in charge of raising and lowering the moon, no easy or unimportant task, and now that she has been reformed and healed, she has regained her job. In "Sleepless In Ponyville", she consoles Scootaloo over her fears of Rainbow Dash rejecting her: "When you awake, the thing that frightens you most will still exist. Everypony has fears, Scootaloo. Everypony must face them in their own way. But they must be faced, or the nightmares will continue." A bit of tough love for her wellbeing. All of these things make her a heroine.

 

Celestia doesn't have "issues". Luna does.
This is the same reason Batman is more popular than Superman. Superman and Celestia just seem so perfect. Luna and Batman are both good guys but they're edgy and have character flaws that make you empathize with them more. Luna, for example, struggles with envy and feeling unloveable, both in "Friendship Is Magic Parts 1+2" and "Luna Eclipsed" . Makes me want to give her a great big hug. Or write a nocturne for her. Just to show I care.

 

Aesthetics.

Luna just looks awesome. Those cerulean eyes, the indigo mane, the navy hair, the long eyelashes and cadet blue eyeshadow (note to my future wife: you will be wearing Luna eyeshadow). Thelivingmachine02 has done some gorgeous humanizations of her on DeviantArt. Tabitha's Luna voice is both elegant and youthful. Except when she's using THIS MUCH VOLUME and then it's just hilarious.

Luna rarely appears.
Which means you never get sick of her. And, next week she's getting a new episode. I can't wait!
