The endings to the Pikmin games always tug on my heartstrings for some reason (Screw you, Olimar, stop making me so sad!)

There's also the endings to the Walking Dead and The Last of Us. That may sound like a cliche, but it's true. Both games tug onto your feelings like nothing else.

Castlevania Mirror of Fate ending. Yeah, it was predictable, we knew Trevor was going to die and become Alucard, but I didn't expected Gabriel Belmont to break that bad. And while many other examples above are woth mentioning like Xion's death or the ending of Okamiden (I got feels in those ones), Mirror of Fate was the only one that made me cry outright

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile

 

This game is interesting in that it actually has two saddest moments. The first one happens about two-thirds of the way through the game.

 

After you save Granny from Joka's interrogations for the Moon pendant, Joka eavesdrops and figures out that Grandpa is the one who has the pendant, so he flies off to the Wind Village to steal it. The next two subvisions focus on Klonoa reaching the Wind Village before Joka to protect Grandpa and the Pendant.

 

Once you reach Grandpa's house, Joka comes in with an enormous fleet of industrialized airships, and blasts Grandpa's house (with Grandpa still in it), completely and utterly annihilating it. Joka then takes the pendant from the rubble. Klonoa goes further on into the level to see if he can get Joka only to initiate a boss battle, while Joka himself actually gets away fairly easily.

 

Following the boss battle, Klonoa immediately heads back to Grandpa's house, where Grandpa himself is lying there, dying. The scene has Klonoa holding Grandpa in his arms, begging him not to die, as Grandpa says his last words. Every bit of dialogue here is heart-wrenching and depressing, and is really enough to make even the strongest people cry.

 

Especially near the end, when he screams, in the most pained and traumatized voice imagineable, Grandpa's name/title. I've watched the scene a million times and it still sends cold shivers up my spine.

 

 

The other depressing moment in the game is the ending. Oh GOD, that ending.

 

The ending centers around Klonoa and Huepow finally being able to relax after the long adventure. Klonoa relaxes peacefully, happy the whole thing is behind him, but Huepow spends a lot of time being quiet. Eventually, Huepow manages to get the truth out. He confesses to Klonoa that doesn't really exist in that world. Huepow summoned him from another world, and changed all of his memories to revolve around the idea that he's always lived in Phantomile so he could stay there and save the world. The entire scene Klonoa tries to no avail to deny all of it, hoping it's just a lie, or some sort of cruel, tasteless joke.

 

And the worst part of it all? When Lephise sings her song of Restoration to restore the kingdom to it's former glory from before Ghadius' evil, Klonoa will be forced back into his own world. This is conveniently revealed shortly before Lephise goes up to the balcony and sings the very same song. As the song starts, a portal opens that begins pulling Klonoa out of the world, with Klonoa struggling to fight it. Huepow tells Klonoa that now he can go back to his true home, but Klonoa doesn't want to leave, screaming at the top of his lungs in sheer desperation that he doesn't want to go.

 

Huepow, not really wanting Klonoa to leave himself, runs out to the flopping and struggling Klonoa, holding him by the Wind Ring, both of them screaming and sobbing as they begin to lose their grip. Huepow lets go first, sending Klonoa flying into the portal as the song begins to reach it's conclusion.

 

And the biggest kick in the shin? It isn't until AFTER Klonoa's gone that the world finally starts to restore itself. THE HERO CAN'T EVEN STAY TO SEE THE WORLD HE LOVES RECOVER.

Honestly, when I was a kid, I had only been really upset about one game's ending: Sonic Adventure. I don't know what exactly got me but mind you, I was pretty young haha. Ever since then though, games have never had any affect on me...and I wish they did so it would seem more like I was living the experience as I would feel when reading a book.

If you haven't played Bioshock Infinite then you're missing out on an amazing narrative

In Bioshock Infinite when you find out Elizabeth is Booker's daughter. It literally broke my heart and that Booker was living with so much regret and pain and had to go through so much trouble to "Wipe away the debt".

 

The finger, the brand on Booker's arm and the overall crappy state booker is in.

 

Every single moment in the game starts crashing down on you towards the very end and it's just heart wrenching. I didn't play any game for weeks  because of that. You attach to both characters so much and they do later on start to bond like a actually father and daughter.

 

 

Even the walking dead couldn't top that for me (Though it was a strong second) . I hear The Last Of Us was sadder but I don't have a PS3 so tough luck for this guy.
