The Outsiders

So, anyone saw the premiere of Nat Geo's The Outsiders?  Does anyone even have that channel? I don't watch tv, so it sounds like one of those channels you get with 100$ per month package deal (i.e. it's "special")....

This is (as far as I know) the first time bronies are introduced as is in an actual tv show (instead of ripped off or laughed at in politically slanted comedy shows).

SO...yeah... what do you think?

I don't watch tv either, prefer books to shows....

I just want to know what people think of their portrayal of bronies...and how bronies fit in to whatever else they talk about...

Do we really need this media attraction?

We are not a culture for crying out loud. We are just people who like a tv show. Nothing more

My friend kept on bugging me about it the entire day.

Nat Geo is a channel only available in that grand ol' country full of kangaroos and poisonous animals. Australia. Only the people in Australia are badass enough to have show with Bronies in it heheh.

EDIT: There maybe some way you can find it online though but I'm not sure how.

Just watched the preview and it piqued my interest. I'd like to see what he has to say about them, but for the viewers of the show, I feel that the types of bronies to be represented might seem a bit more "odd" because they're in an environment that encourages them to be, a.l.a Bronycon. Most bronies are just normal people, living their daily lives, without dressing up, or going to cons, or anything like that, so a "normal" representation of your average brony wouldn't be quite that exciting, but it would be accurate.

I feel that showing the bronies at Bronycon would give an odd impression to most people, and some might see it as pretty extreme to dress up as your favorite horse, but then again, the cons are the best place to find bronies in a large group. But I don't feel anybody would come away from that with a true idea of what bronies are like.

I have yet to see it. It did however, remind me of Hinton's novel The Outsiders, back from my 7th grade Language Arts class. Great novel if you ask me.

I saw the post about it on EQD, and looked into the website. As far as I can see about it (I watched the preview as well), the show will focus on the ab-norms of society.  Nothing freaky or weird like inflation-ists (let's hope not) and sexual fetishes.  Bronies are very strange in the mainstream.  As are certain period reenactments... The show actually looks like it's going to be fairly entertaining, and I do not see them putting any group of people into a negative light, since the goal is to get viewership.  It's like a show that reminds you strange people are out there, and you normal people will know of someone from any one of the camps that they will show.

At least, this is all my theory upon a 1 minute preview....

whats the big deal? we are normal yet they treat us like aliens or people who need to be in a mental hospital. we keep everything to our self's mostly, why have they got a problem with it?

The media rarely portrays deviance's from the culture norm as normal. It wouldn't entertaining otherwise. There's not much we, as the fandom, can do. There will always a pocket of fans that the media will exploit for entertainment purposes, and all fandoms are subject to this, not just the Bronies.

I agree with you. I think that the problem is how vocal we are. As much as I like that we have so much fanart, Cons(Although I am not interested in them), and stuff, Our activities bring attention from the media. But of course with a fandom of our size thats bound to happen

@@Mywas, I think the difference is how outside the norm we are as of society today. Trekkies went through the same stuff we did in the early days of Star Trek because of how outside the norm they were back then. They are highly accepted now due tot he fact that they have been around 50 or so years. Anime fans are still having problems outside of Japan. It's not as bad as bronies, but what we deal with from the media is there for anime fans. Although, with anime becoming more and more accepted/enjoyed by those not absorbed into the anime community as a whole (i.e. people who may see one or two anime on tv but nothing really more at a time), it is on track to becoming just as accepted as Trekkies and such. What puts both of these fandoms in a different league than bronies is how "expected" these fandoms are.

Trekkies have 50 years under their belt, so if you become a Trekkie, that's okay. Add Star Wars, LOTR, and other Sci-Fi and Fantasy fandoms in, and to a degree they all mesh together because of how acceptable they are. What also helps these fans is how their medium is presented. The Next Generation seemed to have thrown Star Trek into the mainstream, LOTR and Star Wars got major motion pictures that were critically acclaimed films that were beloved by the mainstream. Anime, well, most anime as far as the mainstream is concerned, is riddled with scantily clad females with extremely large breasts, so it's expected that single guys would be absorbed in anime (This is the MAINSTREAM talking, not me personally, because I am a die hard anime fan and I'm female). It doesn't help that Japan is pretty much catering this view, but that's what the general audience wants, and with that problem, there are deeper societal issues going on in Japan that the West do not care or know about.

Bronies, on the other hand, are NOT mainstream. Their medium as well is not directed for ALL/mainly ADULT audiences, MLP is meant for kids, has been meant for kids since the 80's. Add the whole gender stereotyping nonsense as far as western society as a whole, and its no wonder we are an easily picked on fandom. With how quickly our fandom has grown, as well as media picking up on sad tales involving bullying due to said gender stereotyping, and as far as the media is concerned, we are a group that not only will bring them money but also entertainment value that will get the mainstream to watch more of their shows at the expense of our fandom. We are NOT a normal fandom, as far as widespread fandoms are concerned. Gender stereotypes is the biggest culprit in this, but we can't help it if the creators have made our medium truly an awesome piece of entertainment. We can't help it that the show is just that good that we devote our money, time, and energy into the creative side of what we love about this show.  If we want to stay true to what our fandom has created, we need to persevere in the face of the critisim that mainstream media presents.

You can consider the mainstream media the biggest trolls of our fandom. They make money by making fun of us, they help fuel haters and internet trolls who watch the degrading shows, they overall encourage laughing at us and mocking us. We cannot compare ourselves to other widespread fandoms as a whole, because the Brony fandom is NOT like them. Sure there are aspects of our fandom that are present in all other fandoms, but as a whole, we are as deviant as a widespread fandom can be. We are not a small fandom that is questionable, such as furries (how often do you hear about them?), we are growing force, with extreme creativity compared to other fandoms in terms of how old of a fandom we are (4 year old Bronies vs. 50 for Trekkies and Dr. Who). We are changing the face of what fandoms can do, as well as challenging traditional stereotypes that control our society in a very de facto way. This is how we are different, and this why we are targeted.

It's not a bad thing either, we should continue to hold our head high as a fandom and keep pushing for change in our culture. We can and HAVE BEEN making a difference in such positive ways. We are only 4 years old, and yet, we have accomplished so much, and who know how far we will go? Only we can determine that.
