Fan fic tips?

Dexius

Recommended Posts

Hello there and good evening. So I want to write a fan fiction about Derpy. This is not going to be a love story but more of a adventure. Any tips? I have not written a fan fic since minecraft and it was the worst thing I ever wrote.

Just be yourself, find your writing style. For example, I like to use robust lexicon to expound the creativeness in my humor fics.

Avoid over indulging in contact with the mane 6. Alot of fan fics fall flat on their face by trying to shoe horn in rainbow dash, or trying to write RD in a relationship with their OC.

Be good (or fairly good) at spelling. I've had that problem millions and millions of times. But, also like BinaryPony said, find your writing style. Maybe you find more interest in sadfics or your better to write sadfics, or adventure, or slice of life, even horror! Every-pony has his or her writing style. Don't be afraid to express yours, Dexius.

Don't focus on story as much as character, you can still have a good book as long as the characters are good, even if it's a bad storyline.

and if you find out that your characters are all the same, throw in a plot twist like they are all actually clones or the artifact diminishes the soul

I'm sorry, i had to brohoof because of the picture

ok so like if you're halfway through the story or have made too much progress to go back and edit so much stuff, and you notice your characters are loosing their personality or never had any to begin with, create a reason for this, like if there is an artifact (ex. an ancient statuette, or magic-y stuff) have one of the properties of that artifact be that those around it begin to loose who they are. or they could fall sick and that's why they have been acting blandly so they just need to go through a quick fix.

Whatever you do, just make sure you enjoy it. If it's not a pleasure to write, then it's not going to be a pleasure to read. Writing isn't easy, and if you're out of practice, it's safe to say that whatever you start with won't be all that great. That said, if you like what you're doing and you keep at it, you'll go places.

  • New speaker, new paragraph. Always. No exceptions.

Capitalize proper names and the first word of a new sentence. Nothing else.

Double-space your paragraphs. Avoid walls-o-text.

Show, don't tell.

Describe, describe, describe.

Find a perspective and stick with it. Don't flip between three different ponies' thoughts in one paragraph.

Stay in-character. The canon ponies have distinct personalities; don't make them act unnaturally.

Avoid edgy OCs. Avoid Mary Sues. Avoid having an OC be better than a Mane Six pony at whatever they're good at.

Write what you enjoy reading.

A classic story told well beats a totally original story told incoherently.

Be open to criticism, but don't be a jellyfish.

If you ask me, write down all your ideas first on a list. Tried doing this and it helps a lot in making the flow of the story. The story, it depends. If you're making a sadfic, add a tragedy, or any other good story, add plot twists. Making the paragraph a bit exciting will keep the readers wanting more. And if you're making a story that is per chapter, the best tip I can give is to have a wicked cliffhanger. It keeps them on the edge of their seats, thinking what will happen next.

But the best tip in every story making, is having fun. Letting your imagination go wild and making it into a nice story will make it both interesting and enjoyable on both the readers and the writer. And practice makes perfect. You may not get it on the first try, but in a little while, you can construct more sentences with ease, even with deeper meanings in then for a thrill. Just never give up and continue on what you like to do. Who knows, maybe one day, you'll be known by your work.
