More depth is all he needs.  All we know about him is sappy nice stuff.  Give him some quarks and negative traits to make him more interesting.  Basically, do what Sass did in this fanfic:

Flash dosen't need to be a joke to actually work as a character, yes he was introduced to be the handsome boy who Twilight drooled over I won't deny that but that dosen't mean that if he is introduced to the show that his role has to be just that. Even if him and Twilight did get together it could still work if it was written well ie was not forced, evolved naturally over the course of the series and did not detract from the main point of the show. He dosen't have to be in the show, but him being in the show wouldn't be the end of the world so long as he was written well.

Citrus's 10 Step Program to Making Flash Sentry Work as a Character:

 

1. Make him a character outside his relationship to Twilight.

 

2. Do a better job at said relationship so that it's an actual relationship instead of two teenagers acting like wishy-washy dolts who base their affection off how cute it is that they accidentally touched each others hands.

 

3. Go back in time, disguise yourself as Darth Vader of the Planet Vulcan and force Hasbro's CEO to cancel production on EQG.

 

4. Take a note from that Clayface episode of Batman: The Animated Series and reveal that Flash is actually a sentient mass of Discord's dandruff.

 

5. Turn him into a jazz clown.

 

6. Make him speak only in Fancy.

 

7. Reveal that he's actually the Master in disguise so he can get close to the Doctor, who is Twilight's waifu.

 

8. Bananas.

 

9. Get Leonardo Di Caprio to voice him.

I've never been interested in the character and never gave him much thought, but one thing to consider is that the pony Flash could be a more rounded character than we saw. He wore different armor and announced the princess; him doing those things could imply he holds some rank. Perhaps he was Shinning Armor's assistant. He's clearly not a Crystal pony. Why is that? Bad writing? Nothing can be done with the teen character to redeem him easily, but we saw the pony Flash exactly twice. Something to consider.
