@, there are not much options for controls, so the controls for all characters are pretty much the same.

A, B, and C are attacks, from weakest to strongest.

D is for "magics".

Note: Those are not the letter keys, but the control key "names". You can map these control keys to any keys on your keyboard. For me, the best combination is [W][A][D] for Player 1 directions, [F][G][H] for Player 1 ABC, and [R][T][Y] for Player 1 DEF. Then the arrow keys for Player 2 directions, [<][>][?] for Player 2 ABC, and [L][:]["] for Player 2 DEF. I chose [space] for pause.

Most of the "special powers" are just "rolls through directions" after which you press attack, e.g. from down, through down-right, to right (as if you were making a hook punch). Or in the opposite direction. Sometimes you must sweep an arc from front to back through down, or the other way around. This is usually the case for super powers, which sometimes require to repeat this arc motion twice in a row before pressing C.

Some special powers require activation (as is the case with Fluttershy's summoned animal helpers), which usually works with D and some directions.

For me, the hardest yet is Twilight's teleportation spell, since it is not a simple roll, but I need to move first, and then switch to down, but without going through down-right first (that is, a 90-degree angle), and only then to roll through down-right and press C in just the right moment. It doesn't always work, but I think I start getting the right combination with practice.

You can check out all the combos at the pause screen, by choosing the middle option with A.

Got it to download for mac, but I can't get the game to run. Any ways on how to get it to run?

You need to use Wine as there is not a true mac version I believe.

At least that's what I think I read, I never bothered looking anymore into it since my "mac" only has a 1024x600 resolution (hackintosh dell mini 10v).

I don't think I'll be able to play the game because obviously I play my games with a USB Controller device, but I don't think this game is registering my controls at all. I would download XPadder, but I don't think that one will download on me.

@@The Mane-iac,

How would you do that? Do I run the app through there?

Basically. Do you have wine/have you used it before? If not there are great tutorials out there, and an official wiki. Make sure you specify OS X is looking up info since it is also for Linux. It basically is a free/opensourced way to install or run Windows programs without having to use Boot Camp or a program like Parallels.

Unless you are running something older than XP, or are using a Mac, XPadder will work. Just to be clear though since you've never said, you did go into the options at the top of the window and under Game checked the box for Joystick clear at the bottom correct? As well as then setting up your buttons in the Joystick menu?

If you think Twi's teleportation is hard, look at Rarity's level 3 super attack...

So I need to beat the game with just Flutters and Twi now. Two of the characters im least adept at.

Okay, honest confession - I thought beating the game with each character would unlock something, such as the four 'bonus' characters that appear on the selection screen... I feel so dumb.

I'm playing the game through windows 7 if you asked me and yeah I did check the box for joystick, but when I try to input the controls, it's not inputting with my PS2 controller at all. As for my XPadder problem, I would download it, but I'm not sure if the site I went to is the right one.

Realest possible talk:

I can NOT set my directions when trying to configure my TE to the game.

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/mvc0902.jpg

I can set buttons, but I have no directions.

Can someone help me out here?

I might be on the same page as you because obviously I can't play the game without my PS2 controller via USB controller device. I'm just hoping someone around here that can help us remedy the controller problem.

It's really weird. I turned on joystick in the game menu. And then was able to set buttons. I could not set directions, though.

I figured they'd be automatic, but no. I had no way to move w/o the keyboard directions.

I'm real excited for this but I don't think I'll ever learn the controls for the specials. I mean I know how they work but hitting all the directions on a keyboard is just not the same as using a D-pad or Joystick. No natural feeling of rotation you know?

The AI does need some difficulty levels added in

For sure! Twilight beats the hell out of me like a magitech-upgraded cyborg :P So far the only character I managed to beat in story mode was Applejack. There was not much time for doing combos, so I could only block for most of the time and then kick her down when she came up, followed by a series of different punches and finalized with the easiest AJ's combo: the earthquake.

Unfortunately this tactic doesn't work well for Twilight, since she can teleport and smash my head with her book from above.

and I feel story mode needs tweaked so you don't fight yourself first off (or at all IMO) no matter who you pick.

Mirror match is interesting feature, because you can duel with yourself and your forces are equal against each other. But I'd leave it for the end (of all the Mane Six).

A dedicated training mode would also be nice

Aw yeah! This would be great!

but for now all you have to do is turn the setting on in the pause menu to make health regen.

Good point, thanks for that tip.

Then either fight the AI in story mode or fight a dummy in versus.

Yeah, the dummy. That's what I train on most of the time for now. But it would be better if the dummy could move on its own and at least block and attack sometimes.

Well... That's why Friendship is Magic :P I need to get some friends to play with me (move that dummy for me ;J ).

I thought beating the game with each character would unlock something, such as the four 'bonus' characters that appear on the selection screen...

I'm afraid this won't happen anytime soon.

If you look into the directory with the game files, there are files with .player extension: those seem to be the character files. And I see only Mane Six character files there :(

Yeah, it's a bit pain in the ass. But with a little practice it can be done. I'm on keyboard too, and here's how I do it: I press down with one finger, then I add right with another finger (pressing two keys at the same time), and then I release the former finger (down), leaving only the latter (right), and press C when still holding it. This way I get the down-downright-right combo. It's like playing legato on piano.

For Twilight's teleportation, I think I finally learned it: First I press right, then release it and quickly switch to down, after which I add right with another finger, and press C when still holding both directions. This is how to get right-down-downright.

It all seem to work for all characters, with one exception: Rainbow Dash. I couldn't managed to launch her super combos no matter how hard I tried. I don't know why. Do they require some special approach I'm missing?

I have a ripped version of the game on my computer. You're right, there are only Mane 6 files in there... along with pictures of Silver the Hedgehog and Toylestia.

There is also the Beta Rainbow Dash theme haning out in there too, as well as the rest of the soundtrack. There is also two mystery songs: #2 which seems to be nothing and #9 which is a fully fleshed out song, but for what I have no clue.

I can link it if you want me to. Go digging in there for yourself.

@@Barbaloot, you mean the sources? Sure, I'd take a look out of mere curiosity. I like to see how things are made.

Alright, let me upload it somewhere and post the link.

Here ya guys go, the rip of Tribute_Edition. There's some weird stuff in here, but it's mostly just stuff you'd expect. Still, the images might come in handy for gifs, and the wav.s might be nice too.

I'm hearing from some people that you can map keys on this game

Is this true and if so how do you do it?

Being a righty it's getting annoying that I have to punch with my left hand and move with the right.

Trust me that's how you're going to want it in the long run. Try doing a full 360 directional with your left hand.. Not very easy, and very important to do.
