Spike the Martyr (A complaint about his terrible writing)

So much whining. Anyway, my opinion on this is that Spike has always been the butt of the jokes, nothing different from usual. I don't care because they're pretty funny and I think Spike was only interesting when he acts like an actual dragon. For god's sake, you could make him a pony and nothing would change

Hmm, that's an interesting thought.  But I don't quite understand (or maybe just don't agree with) your first-ish statement, "His only reason for living with ponies is that he wants to be needed by them." (emphasis added) I think that Spike's attachment to them isn't just a selfish one, but more of a decision because he likes them, and simply because they're his family.  If I'm not mistaken, that's the reason he chooses to go back home in "Dragon Quest".  But please correct me if I'm wrong, because I haven't watched the older episodes in months and I haven't even read most of the comics, so I could definitely be wrong about something here. :)

It was in Owl's Well That Ends Well where Spike was jealous because he thought the owl was threatening his assistant job for Twilight. Then there the times Spike is happy helping Rarity as much. There was also Spike at Your Service where Spike was making a big deal about his honor of a noble dragon and helping Applejack.

A major part of Spike is that it's ingrained into his character to be there needed at his pony friends whim. Crystal Empire Part 2 supports this with Spike greatest fear, "We were home. You told me you didn't need me anymore. You were sending me away..."
