My first reaction: GET YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA OUT OF MY GAMING.

After reading the article they said that it will still be operating independently but I worry for the future of this device. In my experience the more the focus is taken away from gaming the less likely anything it will be used for in gaming will be any kind of spectacular.

I don't want a "share with Facebook" button in every game I ever play. I hate when socialization in gaming extends any further than online, multiplayer and voice chats. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

Um... what? You're kidding, right?

*reads article* What the hell. Facebook are you serious. No. No. Nuhhh- no. It's a bit too early for April Fool's, ain't it? ...oh wait, they are serious. What the FUCK.

The thing that I don't like about this is that Facebook is all about connecting people in various ways. I don't need another fucking way to connect with people. The Rift was meant to immerse us into a video game but it's pretty damn likely they are gonna take away that immersion by adding "share" buttons and ads. I hate when FLASH games use that crap, I don't want it in my The Forest.

Well, I'm fairly sure I'd like to see virtual reality go forward. Not just with video gaming, but with other stuff too. Just so long as Zuckerberg doesn't screw up, I'm fine with it.

EDIT: I doubt they'd screw around with Rift.

Of course, I'm just jumping to conclusions but there was nothing the Rift was doing that Facebook could have possibly been interested in. I don't imagine them just leaving the company to their own devices.

Just as I don't want that in my Team Fortress.

I do understand the need for non-gaming stuff to reach the full potential with VR, though I feel gaming is the only medium that will ever be able to take full advantage of VR in the first place. I don't know where Facebook thinks they can take such a project. Seeing people's faces closer than if you just use a webcam? Yeah, that's real interesting.

Why the hell would Facebook want to buy the Oculus Rift?

Unless...

In that case...

I really hope it's an early April Fools

You know, I hadn't even considered that possibility. I always forget that April Fool's exists. I honestly hate the holiday in general because stuff like this does appear and you stop being able to tell what is and isn't real unless it's EXTREMELY obvious.

That's a very strange move on Facebook's part. Have they done anything else quite so... sideways a jump?

Zuckerberg is going to screw around with it...

Zuckerberg says that their efforts with Oculus will continue to focus on gaming initially, and that the company will continue to operate independently of Facebook. But after gaming, Zuckerberg says, they’re going to expand into a variety of other arenas.

“After games, we’re going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face — just by putting on goggles in your home,” he says. “This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.”

And guess what platform that "inspired vision" will be on? Yeah, bloody facebook of course. I'm just going to wait it out for a competitor to come along and outdo them. It's really only a matter of time anyway, Oculus VR isn't that big of a company compared to some of the tech giants they're competing against.

Honestly, I think this is the biggest Facebook jump since they started making Facebook credit.

I think it'd be pretty cool if you could use virtual reality as a sort of way to connect people who are in long distance relationships. That'd be the best thing for a lot of people.

It's like these people have never heard of a webcam before. The rift being on your head won't do anything different and in fact would obstruct your view of another person's head if they are also using one and vice versa.

Perhaps but such a thing would require a mechanical setup that's way too expensive and advanced for the common person to use at this point or a technology we haven't invented yet.

Notch is shelving plans for native Oculus Rift support in Minecraft.

If I were a game developer, I'd do the same. Facebook has no business nor should they have any business in my games.

Skip forward to 29:15. Zuckerberg says "there might be advertisements." Well there goes any money they coulda got from me on an Oculus Rift.

Oh yay, because I wanted to be flooded with updates from empty headed teen age girls, and constant add ware with my VR gaming. If this follows any trend set by social media, the oculus is just going to be the worlds most immersive piece of add ware!

This move makes the Rift dead to me. I loathe Facebook. Outside of actual video games, interactive movies, educational programs and such, VR really isn't that useful. It's very stupid for flash games like you commonly find on FB and it makes no sense in a "connected to people" sense since you've got this screen strapped to your head and taking up all your vision. You can't walk around the streets with it like Google Glass.

This whole transaction seems completely stupid, and seeing as how they started out on Kickstarter, I don't understand how they can get away with this. They took all that money, promising a finished product, and they've sold themselves out instead.

That's okay, from what I've heard the Sony VR pretty much hits the nail on the head and only needs a very few minor tweaks. Would have loved a PC version, but I'm sure someone will get it working on the PC if Sony doesn't provide that out of the box.

And that would be the problem with Kickstarter. A lot of people seem to think it's investing, when it's really an unregistered charity site when it's all boiled down. It's not even gambling, as there is no possibility of getting more than what you put in.

Who says its going to be integrated into Facebook? Sure, it wouldn't make sense for them to buy it for any other reason but I can't see how they'll integrate the two.

Perhaps it's just a means to increase revenue?
