So, I guess this is a pretty good place to ask this...

I've been thinking about buying SA1, SA2, and Heroes online. Never played the Adventure games (except I think I played 2 once at this place as a kid), but Heroes was my first Sonic game and one of my favorite games when I was little. It's a shame I lost it before I could finish it. I wanted SA1 and 2 because they generally get more praise than Heroes, at least by Sonic fans, and they're usually known as the best 3D Sonic games. So, are there any reasons for me to purchase or not to purchase these games?

You're on! Just something random to help prove my point... in my opinion, Sonic Labyrinth is a fun game, all the flack is about it's actual game mechanic Sonic can't move fast without Spin Dashing! (le gasp!) It's an enjoyable puzzle game and is definitely worth playing with the right mindset.

Labyrinth is a game I've only played a little of. The only way I have to play it is through Sonic Adventure DX after getting enough emblems to unlock it. The problem is that every time I unlock it, I lose the memory from that file in some way so I never get to play it often.

The main thing I remember about it is that it makes me think of Sonic meets Marble Madness.

You should definitely get them. While I'm not one of those that believe the Adventure games are the be-all, end-all of the 3D games I would say they are great games to get if you want to see the legacy of the series and how it evolved. Plus if you've played, or plan to play, Generations then you'll see how things originally were and appreciate the levels and bosses from these games all the more.

Plus, in my opinion, they are the best games in the series (besides 06) to handle contextual levels. Levels designed around the events of the story instead of being randomly colorful for the sake of being colorful and building a story around that like a lot of the more recent games.

Is this the PS3 version or something?

I'd recommend proceeding each of them with caution, because every game has some stupid design choice. In Adventure 1, it's thost Big stages, in Adventure 2, it's the treasure hunting stages (especially the later ones .-.) and you have to through Heroes a good chunk of times to finish it. It also doesn't help that Heroes is a bit hard to get used to because of the odd physics. Still, if you can have a great time with them, they're really fun games.

One weird/bad design decision is never enough to totally disregard a game though and for all we know they could love those things about the games.

Meteor Herd is one of my favorite stages in SA2 though. y u speak bad about it? :(

I know it's not, but I have gotten into actual full on conversations about people who hate those games because of those reasons. I'm not kidding.

Meteor Herd, as spacious (Haha, get it?) as it is, is not that bad. Or at least not compared to the mess that is MAD SPACE!!!

Believe me, I know. I actually don't understand how some people can hate those mechanics that much. I can kinda get the reasoning that it doesn't play enough like Sonic when they wanted more Sonic gameplay but they mechanics themselves aren't bad at all.

So then...could you say it was...maddening?

I also hate the "You just hold right" excuse. I'm holding it yeah, but I'm also doing some crazy moves with the physics and mechanics.

Yes, it was very maddening indeed.

You really don't have to just hold right. In fact, the only people capable of doing that are the pros and the lucky. Most of the older Sonic games will kill you dead if you try to just hold right and don't know what you're doing.

It's already been answered by others, but I'll give my two cents.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 are literally my top 2 favorite Sonic games in the series, I would highly recommend them to absolutely anyone, and I'm surprised you haven't played them yet. Sonic Adventure has, in my opinion, some of the best gameplay mechanics in Sonic to date, although it's been quite a few years. The music in this game is also some of the best, with the first level for Sonic being my favorite of them all. The characters are all great, and I think you'll have a ball with most of them. However, Big the Cat and Amy Rose can give you trouble, but no worries, their stories are very short.

As for Sonic Adventure 2, I think this game has one of the best stories in Sonic history, it's got a more serious tone to it than usual, that really tests Sonic to put his speed at the max. You'll find every character who reappears in this game to play differently, but yet similarly. You'll figure out what I mean if you decide to buy the game. I've found parts in this game to be more frustrating than Sonic Adventure played, so I would say that Adventure 2 is harder in difficulty. Also, this game has the Chao Garden mini game, where you can pour hours of your life away at will raising these cute and cuddly creatures to become powerful beings.

Sonic Heroes is pretty different from the Sonic Adventure series, the game style is different, but not necessarily in a bad way. The story is alright, but expect to be playing every level at least 4 times, it'll make sense if you get the game. The absolute hardest part in this game is collecting the Chaos Emeralds, so prepare to smash that boost button like there's no tomorrow, or you can just hold it down.

So, here's my respective ratings for the games:

Sonic Adventure: 9.5/10

Sonic Adventure 2: 8/10

Sonic Heroes: 7.5/10

Take those as you will, but if you only decide to get one, make it Sonic Adventure, it's the best of the 3 you named. ^^

So then...could you say it was...maddening?

Mad Space drove me mad. The gravity in that level was terrible. >.<

I'm sure that was the entire intent of it all. ;)

Once you know how to work it you can be pretty pro at it though.

Mad Space's music was the shit.

Fuck the stage, though

I wouldn't blame you, it's not so hard as beating the game with the teams, but collecting the Chaos Emeralds can be a real pain in that game, as previously mentioned.

I have the PS2 version, and I haven't collected the Chaos Emeralds yet.

I also recently got the Gamecube version of Sonic Heroes at a Garage Sale, but that copy is fresh from the beginning.

The PS2 version has my save data on it.

I just found this awesome Source Filmmaker animation and had to share it.

It's AMAZING!! GLORIOUS, EVEN!

I hadn't seen this yet. It's definitely amazing and this person should have a job at Sonic Team.

Green Forest is one of my favorite Sonic stages of all time btw. Dat music.

It feels weird having Sonic not interrupt Shadow.

But it feels so awesome!

Feels more natural this way anyway. I thought it was awesome when they used all the quotes from both the light and dark side fights too.

I can agree with this, they certainly put a lot of emotion into what Sonic and Shadow were saying, loved it!

Between that video and Generations there's more proof than ever we need a legit remake of the Adventure games. With the tech we have now they would turn out amazing.

Gaming companies have remade some video games before, Star Fox 64 3D comes to mind immediately.

I would also enjoy seeing the Adventure games being remade, but I doubt they'll ever do it. :/

Why don't companies understand that remakes would make them lots of money? :(

Wild Arms 1 got a remake and that remake is supposedly the definitive version, though I've not played it yet. Maybe someday they'll give WA2 the same treatment.

Usually, if they do anything, it's little more than an enhanced port like FFVII on Steam.

Oh, an by the way, they've released more info about the Sonic Boom comics.

SonicBoomVar1D-195x300.jpg

It's been a while since I stopped reading the comics, the reboot really would have been the best opportunity to get back into them, mainly because the reason I stopped was due to how complex the stories would get with all the references to past comics, and too many characters.

I think Sonic Boom will be good though, comic wise. I remember seeing a Facebook post & comment discussing the characters. Apparently, it should be just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and Sticks. But I'm sure more will come of that in due time.

I gotta get back into reading the comics. I wanna get the archive books they have so I can own all the issues they put into those until they catch up, if they ever do. I'm glad they started doing that so I would have the chance to get the older comics instead of being stuck with just the new ones.

I don't know if I'm gonna read the Boom comic. I mean, I'm excited for the Boom game and show, but I'm not sure about the comic.

Don't mind me, I'm just gonna post something stupid...

That's not stupid, it's pretty awesome. Personally, I preferred the VA in the Sonic OVA to Jaleel White, a much better fit for Sonic imo.

I used to be into the comics, but I don't read them anymore. Same feelings you have, though!
