Equestrian law enforcement?

That's because Equestria is so much better than Earth! I mean, in a utopia like Equestria, no pony has a thought to commit crime, because everyone is like family! For situations with crimes, I guess people are more lenient, and just chase you until you give it up. Somewhat like the situation where Rainbow Dash stole some slippers...hehe.

Royal Guards I assume are the federally appointed law enforcement. However the fact that we've never seen them in Ponyville apart from an official visit from somepony from Canterlot disreputes a precint or municipal capacity.

It is possible to assume that crime is so low that having one is not justified per expense, at least in Ponyville.

Twilight does have a fear of dungeons. Perhaps that's a widely held fear, and it keeps all the ponies on their toes, if you pardon the phraseology. Besides, when your sovereign ruler is pretty much an all powerful Goddess, you gotta watch your step! Celestia wouldn't need police to capture a common thief. He'd be moon bound in ten seconds flat!

She's right. The idea of being thrown into a dungeon or banned from Equestria seems to be quite widespread between ponies.

BTW, there should be police, considering it's not so calm and peaceful after episode 19

I always thought of it as this,

There are no local police but more of a federal police, in other words, as blue said, crime rates must be so low that it's probably not feasible to have any sort of local authorities, how ever if sh** goes down, then I am assuming that the royal guards would get dispatched to the location to deal with it.

i think equestria is a kind of communist state, where each ponies role in society is determined, except that it's determined by cutie mark, not by the government. having a role in society that is your special talent and something you enjoy means that there are probably very few people dissatisfied enough to turn to crime.

Maybe there's just one or two local guards that we haven't seem yet. Maybe the population of the small towns and villages like Ponyville are afraid of them, and keep their distance and don't socialize with the LAW. They should have an episode where one of the CMC is caught shoplifting. Twilight would be pressed into service to give legal council to prevent the filly from being severely punished. In the end it's reveled that Diamond Tiara had fibbed, and it was really some strange filly we don't care about who did the swiping. Off with her head?

Everyone else forgetting that Appleoosa *did* have a sheriff?

Appleoosa was a frontier. It needed some law enforcement or a militia to protect themselves against whatever was out there in the desert...which just happened to be the Buffalo tribes.

As for Equestria itself, it doesn't need law enforcement. Remember the Windigos from the Christmas special? It's probably Princess Celestia's uncooperative asset to keep the ponies in line. The Magic of Friendship and Cutie Marks also add to this. Ponies live and die for the society for those three reasons.

I imagine most towns/cities have their own law enforcement, either police or more medieval/ElderScrollsy style town guard. They've just been off screen so far.

Yes, Royal Guards DO run around with arrows in their knees.

All in favor of pony society being "Cutie Marxist" say aye!

Twilight October is now canon.

I like the idea of having an Elder Scrolls Imperial Legion to handle law enforcement. Being able to protect all the land without sticking to any one area, but still having the versatility to organize an effective fighting force if needed.

I would take a guess that police in Equestria is limited to local larger cities and a federal police force. Due to the low crime rates it would be inefficent to run a large police state.

Likewise, fear as some influence among the populace of Equestria in that they could be locked away or exiled.

I would agree with Sir Commie on the aspect that due to their cutie marks, there is less crime. But remember there is a security guard at the hospital, along with many security guards at the palace archives meaning the world isn't as peachy as it may come across as.

As for the Royal Guard, I would guess there's an Equestrian Army which uses WWII styled helmets but is merely a small standing army with many times more in reserves. The royal guard is as its name implies, the royal guard.

Well, I have a suspicion the wonderbolts serve some role as that aswell. If you recall when Spike grew and went berserk, thats the group that came to..in theory,,save the day

But.you never know, there might be some secret pony police

Equestrian Law Enforcement...I keep wanting to contribute to this thread but each time I consider the subject, my feelings on it change.

Principally I'm sure they have police officers. Sheriff Silverstar as an aspect of Westerns aside, it doesn't make much sense for there not to be police officers somewhere in Equestria. Even if Ponyville has no real crime rate to speak of, larger cities such as Manehatten, Fillydelphia, Los Pegasus, Clousdale, Canterlot, etc all probably have at least some form of crime. I don't know what form this crime takes...I suspect that murder is pretty much nonexistent except in extremely rare cases, so felony-level theft is probably the worst sort of crime typically seen in Equestria. Petty theft is probably the most common crime, along with possible white collar crimes such as embezzling.

This is one of those things we're not likely to see much expanded upon in the show itself either, because it's not something easily addressed without violating the kid friendly nature of the show. There are enough hints to make me think that police officers can, should, and do exist, but not anywhere near enough to determine what level of police are present.

Ponyville itself, if they have a police force, likely only has a sheriff and perhaps one or two officers underneath that sheriff. I can't see Ponyville needing much more than that even if it were a town in our world, because it's just too small.

Looking at it literally, there has to be some kind of law-enforcement in the show. But due to the nature of the characters, weapons such as nightsticks/pepper-spray are deemed too violent I suppose. Looking at it from inside the show however, It seems the most major crime was when fluttershy "kidnapped" Philomena. She seemed pretty worried about getting banished, so I guess that's capital punishment?

While I doubt that, say, the murder rate is particularly high, characters having cutie marks doesn't mean they'll be content enough to not commit a crime. I mean, even Rainbow Dash broke into a hospital which, in the real world, could have gotten her arrested.

While Equestria is generally a much nicer world than our own, there are still characters who are shown to be greedy, manipulative, or will take advantage of others. Those are the elements that fuel crime.

I think the royal guards for the princesses is really all that is necessary. But they did show a guard in the episode of Daring Do when RainbowDash tried to steal the book. Still I think equestria is flipside of our earth cause Equestria is the most loving peacefull place you can immagine. Probably why I wish I could be transported there and live out the rest of my life there rather than here. If only that was possible.
