I had this thought a while ago and now learned that it's already in the making. As long as 'commercialism' is involved, any alternative will only last until it gets corrupted by the same influences. So an alternative to various media providers that lasts (and thus instills more faith and is worthy investing in) has to avoid that same trap.

 

MediaGoblin is decentralized, which is one vital key ingredient in everything related to personal freedom and freedom on the internet. I haven't studied this much yet, but it seems to work like a hub then. A unified login is the thing that keeps it all together and makes it useful.

 

I'm curious to see where this leads. One thing that might remain a domain of commercial media providing endeavors for a while is providing the service for financially non-supporting people, so to speak. But it would still be a huge step to have something like a big search engine / hub where you can watch, download and comment on media that various people provide.

And maybe, given time, this whole thing will transform many other processes in society and will enable more people to participate with resources. It could also encompass further areas, like becoming a full social media, but the key is always that it is not a commercially run, not an "owned" service, but a kind of community project.

 

I definitely find this way more appealing than having to consider just moving to another commercial video site that would only, once big success ensues, become just like Youtube.
