Hive King 2,001 April 17, 2014 Share April 17, 2014 Luna had a huge ego and was unable to stand having less attention. It's telling that when we later see this, IT IS AN 8 YEAR OLD ACTING LIKE THIS!! Luna outright admits that she was acting like a brat. Luna does get some sympathy for how utterly pathetic it is to have en ego that large, but she is sympathetic in the way that this guy is sympathetic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rULgVcSzHx4 It's not her personality, it's the fact that someone that could have been so good is reduced to so little because of their pride and refusal to back down. Now, as to why people find her sympathetic, she's black, loves the night, and is more edgy than Celestia, of course people will love her. It's the same reason Draco Malfoy gets so many fanfics of him being a good guy, they're edgy. I assure you that if Luna was the day instead, people would not care at all 3 "Aren’t we the same? Shanks 10,816 April 17, 2014 Share April 17, 2014 Luna had a huge ego and was unable to stand having less attention. When I think of villains with massive egos Frieza does indeed come to mind but Luna is not the same as Frieza by a long shot. Frieza was a cold blooding murdering tyrant who willing to stop at nothing to get what he wanted. He wiped out many sapient species and planets just so he can colonize and rule over them, if Nighmare Moon has an ego it dosen't stem from the desire for absolute power like Frieza if anything King Sombra is a lot more like Frieza. Nightmare Moon did some bad stuff but she is Mother Teresa compared to Frieza. I think this is a bit more complicated than just the matter of a spoiled child throwing a tantrum from not having enough attention as I said in my previous statement. It of course dosen't excuse what she did but I hope they elaborate on this more. 1 Rarity Get's Cockroaches
Hive King 2,001 April 17, 2014 Share April 17, 2014 @, Oh, I wasn't comparing their evil, I was comparing their ego and in that respect, Luna was indeed just as egotistical. Her ego is in a different direction, but I don't doubt that if she was in Freeza's position, NIGHTMARE MOON, would do the same. Luna would probably just conquer Equestria and nothing else 1 "Aren’t we the same? You know, aren’t you carrying the same mindset as I am? You couldn't have gone with Vegeta? Also, you're saying that expecting recognition is egotistical? That's disgusting. Her problems, idiot. Seeing another be praised while you are ignored. Yeah, a lot of people can relate to that. Trouble socializing? That too. Point being that you pretended like that wasn't a factor in why anypony likes her. Instead focusing on a color that she isn't. Logic is a foreign concept to you, isn't it? Does that one episode negate the fact that she fought against Discord and Sombra? That she was the one that was ready to face Sombra by herself? That she provides direct guidance to Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle? You can't just take one quote and ignore everything else she's done. That bias hatred. Except that she isn't. You have compared her to characters that have personalities nothing like her. You didn't compare her to Hinata, Elsa, or any character that she is actual similar to. This is because you haven't bothered to understand her character. And expecting ponies to have insomnia and throwing a coup over it is egotistical Her problems, idiot. Seeing another be praised while you are ignored. Yeah, a lot of people can relate to that. Trouble socializing? That too. Yeah, that's a problem. We don't know if people ignored Luna, we just know that they slept at night. She wanted them to play in the night, a physical impossibility. And as for trouble socializing, that came from the fact that she was a genocidal maniac at one point Point being that you pretended like that wasn't a factor in why anypony likes her. Instead focusing on a color that she isn't. Logic is a foreign concept to you, isn't it? One of them cried over killing her sister, the other one laughed like a lunatic while attempting it. Add to that the fact that Elsa wasn't jealous of anyone and yeah If I had to compare Luna to one character, it'd be Scar if Scar was less insane. Desperately trying to get us to see her as chaotic evil has nothing to do with that question. Good or evil, Luna is sympathetic because of what was in the show and comics, that you constantly ignore. Luna was not given proper dues as Princess and constantly out-shined by her sister. This is from canon material (not that you give that any merit). In short: Luna is sympathetic because viewers can relate to her problems. Discussion over. That was easy. Adachi 772 April 18, 2014 Share April 18, 2014 (edited) I think the nightmare force or whatever amplified her feelings of doubt, before she even knew it was there. Read the comics, at the part where the Nightmare Rarity arc starts. Rarity kept getting dreams of being abandoned, and at the time she didn't know there was this malevolent force that was manipulating her. Yes, the reason for wanting to make forevernight was lame, but by that time, Nightmare Moon was almost in full control, she just didn't make Luna physically transform into Nightmare Moon yet. That doesn't mean that she wasn't already fully invading her mind and controlling her, or at the least, amplifying her emotions by a huge amount. Also, the reason Luna didn't show up til the end of Canterlot Wedding was because she sleeps during the day. It was ending right around when Luna's shift started, and Celestia didn't have time to wake Luna up early. Mywas 687 April 18, 2014 Author Share April 18, 2014 I think OP is missing the point. Luna is not sympathetic because her actions as nightmare moon were justifiable, she's sympathetic because of her guilt and regret about it. She was corrupted into something she wasn't and became a monster. For 1000 years she was imprisoned in the moon because of the darkness that corrupted her. When she finally returned to her senses, she clearly felt remorse about what she had done. After being reunited with her sister, she's unable to adjust to a society 1000 years in the future and felt isolated. Her "fall from grace" can be seen as a bit tragic, and people are always sympathetic to tragic characters. I actually think her reasons for becoming nightmare moon are somewhat justifiable but still wrong. Its understandable why she felt angry, but you're right that her actions were selfish. Just because she regretted it doesn't mean she is sympathetic. Its the same problem I had with Azula, she spended the entirety of Book 2 being a massive bitch to everyone including her brother. And in book 3 she has a break down for a stupid reason and they expect me to feel sorry for her Credits to Mint Drop for an awesome Sig.
IceeBrony 251 July 19, 2014 Share July 19, 2014 I find Luna to be sympathetic. Knowing little about her transformation into Nightmare Moon beyond "[they]... shunned and slept through her beautiful night," I can relate to doing hard work and getting no notice. If that's not relatable, then you probably haven't had your work stepped on hard enough. Her reaction may have been warranted and her banishment overmuch, but we can't assume that. Neither does that detract from her being sympathetic; her actions may have been wrong, but the feelings can be shared. Being banished is also a relatable feeling, if not directly. Almost everyone has felt alone and abandoned. Then her return, she wants to fit in and is remorseful for her actions. Again, very normal feelings. Trying to fit in is a ubiquitous theme. And remorse is something that helps even the worst of people seem more humane. While we may not agree her actions, she is very much a sympathetic character.
