Should Fluttershy be a Unicorn?

I ask this because out of the six, she's the only one who acts like one, being extremley nervous around others, and is good with animal's, both characteristics of a traditional unicorn.

She's fine as a pegasus, but if she were change into any other species, it'd most definitely be an Earth pony, like originally planned

Now, having never met a unicorn, I can't say I'm certain about their characteristics and natural behaviour. But, I do think Fluttershy perfectly fits the pegasus mold. Her backstory is quite befitting of her personality - being frail and unable to support her self through flight, as well as having the disdain towards heights.

I think her being an Earth pony would make a lot of sense seeing as the animals all trust her, but I feel like playing on to the fact that she is a pegasus, that doesn't necessarily enjoy flying all that much, and isnt the best at it, creates a lot of plot devices, and gives us a chance to see her rise to challenges when necessary. I love Fluttershy honestly, I feel like she has been kind of under played this season, and the breezies was just a good episode, nothing like, spectacular. but, Hurricane Fluttershy is one of my favorite episodes of the whole show, I like her as a pegasus.

I like her just how she is. To take her wings away would be blasphemy. Though that doesn't mean I wouldn't entertain the idea of her becoming an Alicorn. Pegasus just fits her personality, and for what she does in the show.

 

Besides the mane 6 have two of each "Species"of pony,2 pegasi, 2 unicorns and 2 earth ponies. I think it'd throw off the "balance" that there is. I'm not counting Twilicorn because her wings are new, and her magic talent far exceeds her experiences with her wings. She's still a unicorn.

How does she "Act" like one? In the context of the show, both Rarity and Twilight are far from being nervous around others, or being good with animals. Maybe in traditional fantasy lore, unicorns might be like that, But not in the context of the FiM universe. Not to mention unicorns arn't by any means a rarity in the show, they're rather common,  unlike in traditional fantasy lore. Which has coined the phrase"Rare like a unicorn" OR "That thing is like a unicorn" meaning It's quite the rarity to of found it.

Okay yes I know that unicorns are mythical, but why couldn't FiM have stuck with tradition and made Unicorns more elusive and magical?

Because then you would lose a lot of dynamic within the main 6.

 

Also, if that were so, and Fluttershy was a unicorn, you would have effectively removed her from the show.

But in the FiM universe unicorns are just another race, and if they had stuck with traditional fantasy lore, well, the show would probably be rather boring. The concept of a traditional fantasy lore unicorn, just wouldn't work in FiM. There would be no "Friendship is Magic".  IMO Zecora is the "unicorn" in this show.

That's one version of the mythological unicorn, promoted by Victorian retellings. There are other versions. Including an older one where Unicorns are far from flighty, but are instead incredibly aggressive. The 'virgin' in this case used to tame the unicorn not because it will run away from anyone else, but because it will automatically kill anyone else.

 

In those older myths, unicorns were part of the 'carnivorous horse' grouping of mythological creatures, and regularly ate people.

Indeed, the Spiderwick Unicorn was noted as being one of the few animals even dragons fear because they were very dangerous. Unicorns have a tendency in mythology to either be insane or prissies

Fluttershy's being a pegasus works way too well for her backstory. Pegasi are sort of "supposed" to be bold, and Fluttershy just isn't. That and her talent being something completely outside of everything she'd known up to that point.

She might not use her wings for much but without them she'd lose a lot.

Yes but the show has said that while culturally earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns have their own things about them that no one individual earth pony, pegasi or unicorn is completely the same. Flying just isn't that important to Fluttershy and I am sure most pegasi probably just use it to get around while Fluttershy is a bit unique in that seems to prefer walking rather than flying and if Fluttershy was a unicorn I think it would be the same with her magic. The kind of magic Twilight is able to do took years of practice and study along with some ambition the latter of which Fluttershy lacks big time.

Fluttershy would be shy in using magic, but in most unicorn stories their magic is something they use as a last resort. They would not be like Twilight Sparkle, who uses magic for the most basic of tasks.

Fluttershy is perfect the way she is. The fact she's a Pegasus actually works really well. Plus, it made for her backstory. Can't forget that. And as others mentioned pegasi should be bold, which she's not, and that's why it's so perfect.

Well, I believe Fluttershy is perfectly fine as a Pegasus.

 

You see her original design was based off of a generation three character called Rosey Posey (or Posey Rosey, whichever the way it goes.) Fluttershy's design was based off of her. Posey Rosey was a earth pony, so if they went with her original design. She would have been an earth pony. Also, to point out, most unicorns use magic for their daily needs. The only unicorns who I haven't seen use magic that often is Sweetie Belle, and she's still learning magic at her age. Fluttershy's personality and cutiemark would never fit as a Unicorn or a Pegasus because Fuarst said herself that Earth ponies take care of the land and the animals. So it's most logical to make Fluttershy an earth pony if her race is changed, in short. Fluttershy's persona doesn't fit the status of unicorns.

Fluttershy being a pegasus helps her with interacting with animals that fly, for example she can fly to a bird's nest that was frightened by something and calm them down and tell them it's alright.

 

Magic might be too frightening for the animals, especially ones that don't have direct, daily contact with it.

 

That's what I like to think when it relates to the show.
