general media The Star Wars EU No Longer Canon: Thoughts?

The Cynical Lone Wolf

(edited)

As may of you Star Wars fans heard that the EU(Expanded Universe)  is no longer canon and that means the following are no longer canon

  • Mara Jade (Luke's wife)
  • Star Wars: The Thrawn Trilogy
  • Star:Darth Plageuis (excellent novel in my opinion)
  • The Rule of Two
  • Shadows of the Empire (a.k.a Episode 5 1/2)

Yes everything including before Episode 1 and after Episode 6 (comics, games, and/or novels) is all non-canon making them useless to play/read . In my opinion, I see what  their plan was, but done so in the wrong way. If want you a fresh new take on Star Wars make the prequels also non canon. Now any Star Wars loyality within me is gone and 7 has to really wow me to make forgive and forget this tragedy. Now, I just want  other opinions upon this matter

I never really thought that the European Union was fitting to be in Star Wars canon, anyway.  :comeatus:

Damn it Disney, the expanded universe has some of the best stuff are you idiots trying to kill this franchise? There is enough material in them to make trilogies forever, especially in the Old Republic era, the time of the ancient Sith and the Force Wars and the events leading up to it.

But but KOTOR...

Damn it that's a lot of world building spontaneously nullified if true. I mean sure, some of EU is iffy but some of it is really good. RIP in peace Thrawn. :(

The Expanded Universe was kind of boxing them in as far as creative options go for this new trilogy and it was already turning into a convoluted mess. It had some good stuff in it though and I'll probably reread it sometime.

EU was never on the same level of canon as the movies anyway.  So I don't see this as a big deal; I would rather not see them be hamstrung by what has gone on in the Expanded Universe.

Besides, don't act like this was the first time this has happened.  There were Star Wars books released in the late 70s/early 80s that were basically killed by Empire and Jedi, don't forget.

I never did think if it as canon in the first place . If it wasn't on the screen then it didn't count .

Okay, we're seriously antagonizing the spelling and grammar gestapo here:

Unless it's an artillery piece, it's spelled "canon" not "cannon".

Disappointing since there were a lot of things I liked about the EU, but it's not really surprising especially considering that it's Disney

Yes, but throwing the baby out with the bathwater seems a tad drastic to me. I can see them rebooting some stuff and getting rid of a few things but there are so many opportunities that they have thrown out the window with this. Darth Bane instituted the rule of two which defined the Sith order as we know it, the dark jedi revolt that led to them being exhiled to Korriban and founding the Sith order in the first place, the founding of the force itself and the force wars which lead to the divisions between the "dark" and "light" sides of the force and much more are all important but are now down the drain. I know it was unlikely but I would have loved to have seen a movie trilogy based on the Darth Bane book trilogy, Darth Bane is the most awesome Sith ever he was the Sith chosen one. Here is the story of Darth Bane

and the story of Exar Kun who is another awesome Sith.

Exar Kun even came back as a force spirit to haunt Luke Skywalkers jedi academy and it took EVERYONE including the spirit of his former master to take him down.

@ I get the impression they're not going to totally throw out the baby with the bath water, and that they'll probably re institute some of the better elements of the Expanded Universe after this reboot. That's usually what happens with reboots is that familiar elements will still reappear.

I stopped caring about Star Wars since Disney bought it. I knew they were going to destroy the franchise, and this will be the final nail in the coffin to a lot of fans.

It's kind of disappointing honestly. After(imo at least) doing a surprisingly good job at handling Marvel, I was willing to give them a chance with this

Okay, I've been doing some reading, and it looks like what I said here is EXACTLY what is going to happen: They aren't going to throw the EU in the dumpster to never be thought of again, they're going to reintroduce elements of it over time.

You mean IG-88 didn't take over the Death Star II? Now everything is ruined!

Not that I'm one to defend the Expanded Universe -- I find it to be a mixed bag, if my sarcastic statements above weren't enough of an indication -- one should read the following paragraph:

In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe. While the universe that readers knew is changing, it is not being discarded. Creators of new Star Wars entertainment have full access to the rich content of the Expanded Universe. For example, elements of the EU are included in Star Wars Rebels. The Inquisitor, the Imperial Security Bureau, and Sienar Fleet Systems are story elements in the new animated series, and all these ideas find their origins in roleplaying game material published in the 1980s.

Demand for past tales of the Expanded Universe will keep them in print, presented under the new Legends banner.

They're doing something practical, I think, in terms of granting creative freedom rather than sticking word-for-word to the Expanded Universe novels. Besides, as the article mentions, Lucas always set the canon according to the films; the Expanded Universe was largely icing on the cake.

I'm pretty sure Shadows of the Empire stays the same, as it takes place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Well. here's to the Rouges, gonna miss them.

and this will be the final nail in the coffin to a lot of fans.

Outside of the hardcre crowd? I doubt it. And nowadays the money is made with those horrible animated series, not comics or novels.

Mara Jade

And good riddance too.

Yes, but throwing the baby out with the bathwater seems a tad drastic to me.

Anything else would have neckbeards the world over breathing own their necks about every line. It's probably for the best.

Maybe, but I think this will probably piss of the "neckbeards" way way more than "anything else" would have unless that anything else actually did ruin the franchise. Sometimes you just got not listen to the crazier fans and just do the best thing and this so far dosen't sound like it but then again that might just be a bit of my protective fanboy mode coming out. As much as I like the movies I like the expanded universe even more.

The thing is, there is no reason for Disney, to care. The old guard will bitch and moan...and then go watch the movies regardless.
