general media The Star Wars EU No Longer Canon: Thoughts?

Doesn't this already kind of work in the comic book universes? I only have video game knowledge, but two huge examples...In Injustice: Gods Among Us, the superheroes stumble upon an alternate dimension where Superman is a totalitarian bad guy. In Batman: Arkham City, well...yeah, there is an important "spoiler moment" at the end of that game that would muck around with anything happening in comics.

It's definitely possible to take existing themes, fantasy inventions, etc, and put a different world-spin on it out of interest. I don't think this shift necessarily needs to be destructive.

It's already established that the DC Universe is a multiverse though. There aren't alternate worlds established in Star Wars.

Then again, the Arkham games are probably their own continuity and not part of the multiverse anyway. :P

Didn't like this week's new issue/episode/post of your favorite comic book/show/blog?

Don't worry.

We have a multiverse for that.

Kel Grym uses cognitive dissonance to evade canon!

It's super effective!

When I heard Disney had bought Star Wars I knew this was going to happen. And when I heard they hired Abrams to direct it things only got worse. The time after Return of the Jedi is just full. George Lucas once said he wasn't interested in doing any more sequels because the books had it handled.

If they have to make more movies they should be Knights of the Old Republic. But that would be respecting the fans too much at the expense of random people who will put down money for any blockbuster that's out.

I remember how exciting it was reading Heir to the Empire twenty years ago. It was just like getting a new movie after all those years. In the years since I've read probably fifty books and that's not all of them. I also really liked the Legacy comics. All of it now mythology or something. When episode Seven comes out I think I'll stay home and reread Heir to the Empire. Or maybe I'll dress as Thrawn and go heckle the crowd.

Wow, that turned into a long rant. Felt good.

This doesn’t really bother me as I never really invested much time into the Expanded Universe; not too mention that the canon status of the EU was almost always in question.

If there is one thing I am majorly disappointed in is that anything that involves Grand Admiral Thrawn would be thrown out: The Thrawn Trilogy, Star Wars: TIE Fighter, etc.,

I only read the first novel, but for me he is by FAR the best villain in Star Wars and it was AWESOME working under him in the TIE Fighter game.

This girl gets it.

And I think I've got a bit of a crush on her.

What she doesn't seem to get is that, just because Disney no longer considers the EU canon, that doesn't mean the EU doesn't exist anymore. It just has a new name and has a different continuity. It's canon in and of itself; it just won't have movies based directly on them. And besides, the guys at Star Wars explicitly stated that the EU will remain an open resource for all those characters and elements she's mourning the supposed loss of.
