Do you think Tirek was a great villain?

Yes, and although it was predictable, he betrayed Discord.

He's not my favorite villain, but he was definitely a very good one indeed.

He was a heck of alot better then King Sombra in regards to back story and setup. Sure he was kinda cliche but he had a good motivation, he had a back story and wow, at first he started out weak but it was crazy how serious he got. I loved it! A very nice villain

I've heard great things about his evilness and epic boss fights.

Tirek was terrifying, seeing him start out as weak and then slowly grow stronger and stronger till he was a giant and couldn't be defeated by one huge blast of alicorn magic by Twilight. I also sort of figured he'd betray Discord, poor Discord I did feel bad for him and he really thought Tirek appreciated him as a assistant. Also I like Nightmare Moon, she's my 3rd favorite villain.

Also I like Nightmare Moon, she's my 3rd favorite villain.

Interesting factoid about Tirek is that his G1 version was an inspiration for Nightmare Moon, his weapon was the rainbow of darkness and chariot pulled by ponies he turned into dragons and his goal was to bring in the "night that never ends". G4 Tirek is a very worthy successor to the original indeed, he is my new favorite villain. The elements of harmony are a reference to the rainbow of light which was used to defeat him in G1 and was apparently used again in the season finale and with that a bit of pimping of the Tirek fanclub is in order I believe.

He was terrifying and pure evil... I love him!  :D He was pretty damn awesome. I think he might be my new favorite villain. And the way he kept growing stronger and stronger was pretty awesome too.

It's good they didn't try to put him to make the eternal night.

I half expected he capturing the princesses to pull his chariot .

But seriously... He is the most "on screen" terrifying villain in the entire series.

I mean, Nightmare Moon was going to end up killing everypony, Discord would make their lives miserable, Sombra was a tyrant and possibly would have conquered other regions and Chrysalis was pretty good as a villain. But Tirek... That scene where he first steals that pony's magic creeped me out.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

There were many villains in G4 MLP which I like and still respect. But Tirek was a perfect villain.

Why?

Because he is the only villain who made all their defense systems ineffective.

They couldn't use any Magic against him, because he was literally feeding up with their magic :) Every time they tried to attack him, he just sucked up whatever Magic they threw at him. And not using Magic was not an option, too. So they were simply baked alive, with no chance to beat him.

Even Celestia and Luna couldn't do anything about him! Can you imagine a bigger threat? The god-like Alicorn princesses cannot do anything to save the day!

And even Discord, the Master of Chaos, fell to him so easily. (Actually, I thought he is smarter than that and he won't fail to him as a little kid.)

What's more, Tirek was perhaps the only villain who forced Twilight Sparkle to choose between her friends and the fate of all Equestria, the hardest decision to make I guess. It's like all her past struggles and lessons culminated in this particular moment, and she could lose all she gained to that point. Now that's a high stake! The highest so far!

It was all well-played by Tirek (and the writers).

  • He didn't go on and on about his evil plans.
  • He was a credible threat.

I really like the fact he didn't crack a single joke the entire 2-parter. All business, very serious.

I agree that Tirek was a really good villain. I wonder where exactly he came from -- it would be great if we receive more backstory about that in later seasons. I also wonder where his brother is now, the one who embraced harmony. I don't remember whether or not they said in the episode.

One of the fascinating things about the relationship between Tirek and Discord in this episode is that it shows that Discord is not invincible. Tirek was able to suck his magic out like he did with everyone else, and it was really cool to see what Discord's magic looked like as well.

I was really sad when Discord started helping Tirek. I really thought that this would be the last of Discord, and that he'd be banished or turned to stone forever or something. Thankfully, he came to see the error of his ways and really, for one of the first moments in the show so far, seemed truly good.

But, I digress. I always like stories involving villains who lust after power without regard to the well-being of anyone else being defeated in the end. Tirek may have consumed the power of many ponies, including alicorn magic, yet it was all absolutely useless against true magic: the magic of friendship.

Just like I knew he would.

Having been a fan of the G1 movie he starred in, it was amazing to see this fresh new take on him.

Destructive, wrathful, corrupting, deceptive, arrogant, he was everything an 80's villain was without the campy veneer.

Indeed, and that's exactly the point. He didn't see "friendship" as magic at all or even that it alone was a threat. It's part of why Sauron failed in the end. It wasn't the great armies of Middle-Earth marching at his gates, but two friends of humble beginnings.

Consider similarly how Chrysallis went on and in about consuming love, but when confronted by two lovers passion and commitment, she called it "a ridiculous sentiment" for she only saw love as a source of power rather than what it truly meant.

Tirac didn't even bother with the first part. But not for the clichéd hatred of friendship on principle, but because he saw friendship as just another form of imprisonment. Not much, but it's more nuance than even Discord has, who does what he does because that's just his nature.

You overlook something about Discord. He has plans within plans and is an archetypical trickster.

My theory is Discord knew what he was doing, knew he had to betray the ponies (Judas Iscariot), knew Tirek would betray him, knew that was necessary so that Twilight would get her key and thus get her glory.

There are theological speculations that Judas knew he had to betray Jesus, and had to simply play his role in the grand scheme of things.

I wonder where exactly he came from

From G1 MLP ;) Nice come back by the way.

One of the fascinating things about the relationship between Tirek and Discord in this episode is that it shows that Discord is not invincible.

That was quite surprising to me. He fell to Tirek too easily.

But I also can understand why: He wanted freedom, and ability to make some lovely chaos again. Tirek runned all over his ambition by saying that he's a servant of some meek ponies while he could be their master. Well, he could, and he once was. It could be exposed more in the show, with more depth and emotional struggle, but I realize that it would be hard to show. They showed it pretty much enough to be plausible. Discord actually fell a victim of his own mindset, perfectly exploited by Tirek.

Tirek was able to suck his magic out like he did with everyone else

True. But I guess that he wouldn't suck his magic so easily until growing strong enough first. Discord could have easily caught him when they first met (well, he actually did), and bring him to Celestia's palace once Tirek was still weak, and nothing of the events we've seen would ever happen. It was only after Tirek gained enough power that he could be able to suck Discord's magic.

Also, he needed Discord to do him some favors first ;)

I was really sad when Discord started helping Tirek.

Yeah, I was like: "Discurd, wut ar u doin' bro, u mad? Ur doin' it wrong! Oooh, ur not using your bRain." :P

But it was interesting to see his emotional struggle. There were several moments when he seemed to hesitate. When some symbols or artifacts reminded him about his friends. It might have been exposed better, but it was a great move from the side of writers. And here's why:

I really thought that this would be the last of Discord, and that he'd be banished or turned to stone forever or something. Thankfully, he came to see the error of his ways and really, for one of the first moments in the show so far, seemed truly good.

This was the crucial part. It almost had me tears when Tirek made Twilight to decide: to trade her Magic (the last Magic remaining in all Equestria) for her friends. When he released all her friends but Discord, and Twilight said: "All of them!" Because this showed her actual deep understanding of Magic of Friendship, I'd say at messianic level. She was like Jesus Christ forgiving his traitor Judas. And this was the trigger which actually changed Discord, hopefully for good: that even after all those nasty things he did to her friends and Equestria, she still considers him to be her friend. This was very moving scene to me.

Tirek may have consumed the power of many ponies, including alicorn magic, yet it was all absolutely useless against true magic: the magic of friendship.

I guess that's because the Harmony Magic was incompatible with him  :) Harmony Magic can be used only for introducing/restoring Harmony in the world. It cannot be used for anything bad.
