Tirek's Horns & Pendant. Possible Symbolism.

These horns...these flipping horns. Why do they remind me of an Egyptian god's headress? I'm trying to think of which one, but I'm coming up with nothing. Is it even relevant? Is it just an aesthetic choice, or were the designers referencing something...

Actually now that I think of it, it kinda reminds me of the eye of Sauron.

But that horn design has got to be coming from somewhere, I just can't think of it.

Or am I reading too much into it?

Hathor?

Ya I keep wondering how long it will take for someone to make a Tirek picture with the eye of Sauron in his horns

Just what we need. Mobile Eye of Sauron.

Yup. Thinkin' the same thing... See my post here from 10:20 AM.

Cool. So I wasn't the only one thinking it. I'm thinking it's just aesthetic though, cause I can't think of any deeper implications than that.

Isis also has horns.

So the horn thing with a sun disc in it is pretty prevalent in Egyptian mythology.

But really, when I think of Tirek, I find more he has more resonance with Moloch, which supposedly translates to King.

img-2624525-2-moloch666.jpg

Also, associated with a horrific form of human sacrifice.

img-2624525-3-BAPHOMET-copy.jpg

I think there is some vague visual similarity with Baphomet as well.

Oh, new thing!

I've identified Tirek's specific species.

He's a Cyprian Centaur.. Or at least that's the closest thing he comes to.

I wonder if there was any Egyptian Neteru who would have such horns and not be a female. Because Hathor's and Isis' gender doesn't quite fit Tirek. The sundial between the horns is the only connection.

You're right about Moloch meaning "King". It's quite common ancient root (M-L-KH), with words such as Malik, Moloch, Malchut/Malkhut (see Twilight's Kingdom) stemming from it.

I'm not sure about the Baphomet though. Except horns, it doesn't fit much.

Same with Sauron's Eye, since Tirek didn't use his plasma ball to watch through infinity. He was rather accumulating energy there.

@@SasQ,

You got a point. I haven't found any male gods with that type of headgear.

Only thing about baphomet that even made me consider it, is the devil parallel and the torch between his horns. But it's still not very similar to a sun disc.

I'm out of ideas for now...went as far as to look into inspiration for g1 Tirek, but all I got was a possible reference to Ernst from the old James bond movies.

  • In Tirek's first scene, his face is not seen, and he is running his hand across the Rainbow of Darkness as if petting a cat. This is most likely a reference to the James Bond villian, Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

Plenty of horned gods of antiquity, but none that I'm aware match exactly to Tirek's nature or his sphere of magic. I can check some ancient Indian and West African imagery and lore when I get home. His initial simian appearance may indicate some Fertile Crescent connection too.

If you turn the horns 45 degress forward, they remind me of The Devil, in that movie that I have forgotten the title name.

@@SasQ,

Reminds me of Lurch the Bull.

Which brings us to another question.

Which animal horns do Tirek's resemble the most? I think it's a species of antelope, but I'm not sure which one.

Impala? Problem is, his horns aren't rimmed.

Tirek's horns reminded me of Nicol Bolas.

At least partly because of the gem Nicol keeps between them.

tirek_by_vector_brony-d7hvbg0.pngSo I've been thinking about the  horns again. And this is my current theory.

It's obvious that Tirek is a negative subliminal statement made against Rock n Roll. Look at the horns. They're an outline of the body of a guitar and the energy he collects appears in the right place for the hole to be.

What does this mean?

It clearly means Hasbro is equating Tirek with Rock n Roll, and by extension, equating Rock n Roll with the devil.

So there you have it. Hasbro is brainwashing kids into thinking Rock n Roll is devil music.

Yeah, and they make "Equestria Girls 2: Rainbow Rocks", solely about Mane Six starting their own Rock'n'Roll band?

Something clearly doesn't add up to...

Also, I haven't heard much rock music in Season 4 finale.

Also also, there are other types of music which can be played on guitar.

There's a resemblance to Freeza's horns

frieza-shakes-krillin-o.gif

There is also a resemblance to Granzeboma and its crown

150px-Tengrian_crescent.svg.png

It's probably too far a stretch, but part of the pendant looks like it incorporates something that vaguely resembles this Tengrian crescent, that is supposedly used in Tengrian revival groups, but I haven't confirmed that for certain.

Any resemblance to the moon would be significant, since Nightmare moon was inspired by Tirek.
