One of the big reasons I like MLP is because of is really good non stereotypical female characters. out side of MLP there are other characters I like that, that I am a big fan of. I am a big james cameron fan and my all time favorite moves are Terminator one and two. so some of my all time favorite female characters are:

Sarah Connor (linda Hamilton) from Terminator

Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) Alien and Aliens Jenette Goldstein as Vasuez is great in that too.

Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriguez are all good in Avatar

Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio form The Abyss

These are just a few off the top of my head, who are some woman characters that stick out in your head?

Sigourney Weaver was one of the first female actresses I've seen, starting with Ghostbusters, then soon after Alien all the way to the 4th movie of alien. Every now and then I see her in cameos these days, but she always remains my favorite strong nonstereo type.

But I agree with the female characters of MLP. You have Twilight who's a bookworm and loves to study, but freaks out over tests. But when it comes to her talents, she's actually very modest, infact careful with her abilities...she doesn't like to show off out of fear for being ridiculed, like in Boast Busters. She even quoted "Who me? I'm just your run in the mill pony, nothing special about me." or "I'm not better then any other pony!"

This is how I feel any of us should think, I mean sure its great to be proud of yourself, but be hummble too, and her character along with other female characters do just that.

One of my favorite type of characters are the female ones that evolve into being bada$$ after facing multiple horrors.

Ripley is a perfect example of this. Nothing gets on my nerves faster than a strong independent female lead (a SIFL) who don't need no man and is bada$$ just to be bada$$. Alice from Resident Evil. Black Widow, I'm looking at you.

Having said that...

My comic's main character is jumpy, timid, and always nervous, and will pretty much stay that way.

Not because she's a woman...because she's the average, day-to-day pony who simply landed in a very bad situation.

That makes her relatable, and makes you care for her safety. You can't say the same for Ms. "Killtacular" over there, slaughtering zombies by the thousands.

The Boss from MGS3, one of most tragic and badass characters in gaming imo

She doesn't really count, since she's just the female avatar of a male-written character, but Jane Shepard is amazing. If we could just have more characters written like her on purpose. (Ashley was good too, though her hair in ME3 makes my eyeroll something fierce. Tali'Zorah is also much stronger than people give her credit for.)

Black Widow has also been stunningly well-written in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, she needs her own movie. (Marvel is doing great with their ladies lately.) Pretty much every female character from Avatar: TLA was fantastically nuanced and non-stereotypical; shame The Legend Of Korra has been rubbish. Disney's interpretation of Mulan was pretty awesome. There are others out there, but it's too early in the morning to think right now.

Kill La Kill's Satsuki Kiryuin. She's more badass than the main character Ryuko.

I definitely agree, OP.  I love the dynamic, non-sterotypical female characters of MLP.  I love the fact that the show is so female dominated, which, sadly, is actually pretty tough to find in movies/TV/games, depending on the genre.  I love to see strong female characters in starring roles.

Let's see...tryin to think of some interesting ones that haven't been mentioned already....uummm...   ..see, this is my point.  It's actually kinda tough to think of many.

How about...

Joe from Twister

Annie Wilkes from Misery

Major Motoko, Ghost in the Shell

Chihiro, Spirited Away

Terra, FFVI

Claire, FFXIII (that's right, I call Lightning be her real name because it's better.)

@@Justin_Case001,

Totally agree with Chihiro. Spirited Away, underneath the gorgeous visuals and music and plot, was an exploration of a girl overcoming her fears and insecurities, and discovering the bravery within herself. In fact, most of Miyazaki's movies have incredible female leads. Kiki, Sheeta, Nausicaä, Arrietty... and I'll include Sophie as well. (She and Howl are very much co-stars, but a big theme of the movie was Sophie learning to see herself as beautiful.)

I feel it prudent to point out; 'strong female lead' doesn't necessarily mean 'hard and butt-kicking'. It's any female character who grows throughout the narrative, possesses realistic flaws and is written as a human with self-agency.

Riley and Ellie (Last of Us) Hands down the best female characterization and overall human characterization in any video game ever

Clementine (The Walking Dead) From innocent to deadeye zombie shooter, never has a game made us care so much for a little girl with or as her.

Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Marvel's Ms. Marvel 2014) An interesting new perspective in comics following a muslim teenager without these aspects feeling forced or unnatural. She throws a fun new spin on what it means to be a superhero

Katherine Kane/Batwoman (Batwoman 2010) Possesses one of the most heartbreaking backgrounds and holds the title of being the most famous/infamous comic book lesbian

Shaak Ti, as portrayed in the Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon.  Sure, she gets her ass handed to her in the end, but Grievous was such a terrifying foe in that series, it only makes her stand out as all the more badass when she knew she didn't stand a chance against him, but still would not flee.  Plus, mowing down an army of elite robots before her defeat really added to her credibility.
