music What kind of metal?

Kind of gotten confused when I started to delve deeper into genre specifications and I got lost. So I'm going to make this according to general consensus. xD

My songs often involve metal + orchestra and I know that doesn't necessarily make me a symphonic metal kind of composer. But I do know that these songs that I do can be classified as metal.

Here's a sample of what I often do:

What I do is that I simply boot up everything that I think would sound good together. A Preset from Sytrus, Philharmonik, EWQL, Edirol, etc, etc. Metal Rhythm Guitar and Drums, Realstrat, and the like. Mash them all together and render without thinking about the genre specifics.

But yeah, what kind of metal is this, exactly?

Heavy metal has super distorted guitars, near-screaming vocals, and much double-kick on the drums., You've got the double-kick on the drums, but I don't hear that much distortion on the guitar.

Symphonic metal is characterized by the ammounts of strings and brass on the orchestra. Also, the guitar blends with the brass section smoothly. Add some distorted guitar and brass to acheive this feel.

Your piece is on the lighter side of metal, although you've got double-time on the drums. You need that signature distorted guitar and bass to achieve that full on power symphonic metal feel.

Cool song! I like it

I'm thinking of making pony metal myself, once I get my drum machine and once Thunder Dash up there teaches me more about music :)

Although, like usual, I'm planning to go in a weird direction and head down some kind of sludgey territory like Acid Bath or A Pale Horse Named Death

Just for reference:

But to answer your question, I have no idea.  B)

Not really that clear. What *exactly* is my kind of metal. A Specific subgenre, if you will.

As for your characterizations, this one should satisfy you:

It is right between the intensity line of Hard Rock and Light Metal minus, that signature distortion you usually hear.

I get that. But is there a VERY specific term? Light metal isn't really a genre. And as far as I know Metal automatically suggest Heavy Metal regardless of standards. I'm looking for a subgenre that would fit my category.

I've listened to alot of symphonic metal bands. Most of them having their guitars at a lower volume where their distortions arent that heavy. A great example would be Rhapsody of fire's late albums yet they're still considered as one of the best symphonic metal bands in the world. Luca Turilli's rhapsody is also a good example.

@@Arkane,

There are many subgenres of metal

1. Death Metal

2. Deathcore

3. Metalcore

4. Symphonic Metal

5. Grindcore

6. Heavy Metal

...and much more

Your piece doesn't fit into any of these because it isn't intense enough. I would simply refer to it as just metal.

4. Symphonic Metal

Did a catch up read on that genre.

Symphonic metal most commonly refers to metal bands that use orchestral elements in their music, either through having an actual orchestra, a few classical instruments, or keyboards that simulate the sounds of classical instruments.

So technically, I guess it automatically denotes that orchestra + metal no matter what ends being symphonic metal. I really find the term symphonic to be ambiguous that's why I'm trying to stay away from it. Only wish there was a thing called "Orchestra Metal." Lol, that would make things easier.

The worst part about being strong is that no one ever asks if you're ok...
