I guess we have a concrete reason why the Powerpuff Girls episode See Me Feel Me Gnomey was banned. According to Craig himself, it wasn't the flashing lights or the communism allegory. The network just thought the metal beams in the destroyed buildings looked too much like crosses and one of the hippies looked too much like Jesus Christ.

The Pony of Shadows has easily the best backstory of any villain in the FIM series, and it’s in large part due to how carefully developed it is throughout. The POS/Stygian could’ve remained some throwaway gag, but Dubuc and Haber slowly developed him. The Pony of Shadows was a major threat to the Pillars, but his greatest success was convincing the vulnerable Stygian to channel his own pain of feeling betrayed and become one with him, turning the Pillars’ greatest strength into their greatest foe. Shadow Play dissected the cause of their rift little by little til the climax.

FiM Season 5's "Castle Sweet Castle" is a great episode, IMO.
