No, it's not. It's called "Hasbro wants to make their main princess character a shining beacon of perfection so that she'll appeal to impressionable little girls." It's nothing more than that.

She already appealed to the actual target audience. Yes they wanted to sell more toys, but that ain't the reason they made twilight an alicorn. Considering twilight is the main character of the show, and she has proven throughout season 1-3 that she is one of the strongest unicorns, it was obvious something was gonna happen.
