I was in the toy section at a local Wal-Mart yesterday when I overheard this girl. She was trying to explain the new ponies (G5) to her mom. Girl: Mom, you know Rarity and Twilight and all of the other ponies from the show. They are just the Guardians of Friendship. These (gestures to G5 ponies on the self) are the real My Little Ponies.

Alicorns are a mix of the three basic types of ponies. They get flight from pegasus, magic from unicorns and longevity from earth ponies. The only old pegasus I can think of is Foggy Fleece, who says "Yeah! I could watch you fly all day long." in Sonic Rainboom. At the Silver Stable Retire Community, we don't see any pegasus and the two unicorns in Dusty Pages' band look much younger than any of the earth ponies living there. Pinkie has plans for her parents 50th, 100th and 500th anniversaries. Based on Granny Smith's lore of Ponyville, she must be hundreds. In episode 100, Dr Whooves mentions a "lifetime of work, well centuries, really". Real life horses 25-33 years Unicorns & Pegasus 75-100 Earth ponies 250+ Alicorns 2000+

There was a video on YouTube of MLP Fair July 2010. As the people recording are going around the vendor hall, they spot a coming soon poster with Twilight Sparkle. Their response was "What is that?" . If only they knew.
