Honestly, I believe "heavy" should be purely descriptive of the musical aspects of the song, the feel of the instrumentation & vocals, rather than the subject matter. And when I think heavy, I think of the song just feeling thick, pounding, crushing, sounds that evoke those feelings. Stuff like thrash, death, power metal, those genres focus more on speed, energy & virtuosity. I wouldn't call Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, or Manowar heavy. Brutal, but not heavy.  

 

 

Stuff from Groove metal, Sludge metal, Doom metal, Stoner Metal, Progressive metal, Industrial metal and even some 70's era Hard rock & Blues rock are what I consider heavy. As far as heaviest songs?
