KoGy 187 June 13, 2014 Share June 13, 2014 Hello Everypony, Have you ever faced the feeling that your countless interests and plans are just way too much to be done? I am interested in a lot of a things but I doubt you can be an artist, programmer, writer, musician, movie director videogame designer and entrepreneur. ~haha Is specialization a sign of maturity? Should I give up most of my interests and focus on one because too much is too much? What do you think and how about you?
Ribbonfree 2,383 June 13, 2014 Share June 13, 2014 Yep, I feel like in most cases it's both easier and healthy for a person to let go of most of their ideas, hold on to them only as hobbies at most and focus on something in particular. In the hyper specialized modern world a lot of expertise is needed in one area to even be able to compete, let alone excel... It hurts, especially if you have an artistic mind, but at the end of the day, most just can't really pull off multimedia stuff unless they have a good idea that integrates multiple professions very well.

Yeah. It's horribly depressing. But it is rational, I agree. I battled my depression for nothing. Edited June 13, 2014 by KoGy
ghostfacekiller39 23,860 June 13, 2014 Share June 13, 2014 I know I'll get to defending Rarity, but I feel overpowered at times, because there's so many people quoting me and I'm arguing with every single one of them and I just get like, really stressed out by it...then I've been meaning to finish Chrono Trigger lately because of the sheer epicness of that game, but then I get distracted by something else because I'm currently stuck on this one part - I keep trying to force myself "Hey, ghostie, stop being a wuss and go finish that one boss you're stuck on." but then I stumble on a sexy Rarity pic on derpibooru and proceed to drool all over myself. Then I've been meaning to write a fanfiction but I can't get around to it because I've got to get a haircut and paint the fence and mow the lawn and go to the cardiologist for my bi-weekly check up and start saving for a car and drive my grandmother to the grocery store and then I'm arguing with 4 people at once because they're attacking the pony I love for no good reason and I've got 55 unread messages in my inbox and then I've got to keep up with the Rarity fan club and then my friends on Skype are always coming to me for help with their problems and then there's always some sort of drama afoot and I worry that people don't like me because I know there's people who lie about me a lot off-site and then I worry that I can't keep up with all of my friends off-site and I'll lose those friendships so I'll message them too and I don't want to get in trouble again so I'm always going back and making sure I don't say something wrong before I post it but then I feel worried that I do and I don't want to get a PM from a mod again because I love this site and I don't want to get banned and then I constantly feel pressure because I feel like everyone's always watching every word I say on this site and if I slip up and misword something once someone's going to quote me on it and I'm just tired -_- I've got wayyyy too much on plate -_- 2 He who is Positively Obsessed With All Things Rarity!!! Fluttershyfan94 5,742 June 13, 2014 Share June 13, 2014 (edited) I know how you feel, sometimes you feel overwhelmed by your interests. That does not mean you have to stop doing any of them, it just requires some planning. Like deciding that you want to do one thing over the other on this day then something else tomorrow or just prioritize. Unless you are referring to future jobs, then in a way you have to specialize a little but variety is good and in your case for example you could do all of those things by being a video game designer. Though sometimes you can't really make your interests your future job, but it depends. ReverseFaller 2,483 June 13, 2014 Share June 13, 2014 Yeah, I feel this way. I have a whole lot of things to do (hobby-related), but as we all know real life can make it hard to find to to do all of these things. Here are some things I'd like to do once I get the time Play Pokemon. I'm playing 4 Pokemon games at the moment, and I want to finish them all eventually. Homestuck. I have to get around to reading it, but good god it's just so long! Magica Madoka Movies-When I get a free day I'm just going to marathon all 3 of them. Half-finished video games-I have too many of these to count. 1 Credit for the signature goes to Kyoshi

Kay Dreamer 884 June 13, 2014 Share June 13, 2014 Just because you choose to specialise in one area doesn't mean you need to drop everything else. You can hold onto things as hobbies. Even little amounts of time spent on them will see them continuously (though perhaps slowly) improve. I'm a jazz singer. That's my specialisation. But because I am a teacher, I need to know much more about music than just my area of expertise, so I've picked up a wealth classical and contemporary knowledge. I have my heart set on learning to play a variety of instruments, so I can better understand each when I conduct concert bands and orchestras. Currently working on trumpet and recorder, hoping to pick up the horn again as soon as I can afford one, in addition to oboe, clarinet, flute and saxophone. (I also play a tiny amount of piano, and I'd like to learn basic guitar.) I'll probably never play any of these beyond an intermediate level, but I can still get a great deal of enjoyment out of them! (Once I can afford to buy them...) I also draw and write. I hope to one day write a series of books around the characters I draw and the world I've crafted for them. As far as consuming media goes, I read a great deal, I watch a lot of good TV, and I love playing good video games. I don't exactly have that much time, certainly not right at the moment. But I find the little gaps here and there to indulge in all this stuff when the mood strikes me. 1 The Crystal Minstrel Pony Tumblr Kay Dreamer's Roleplay OC and Cast Character Archive

Envy 6,169 June 14, 2014 Share June 14, 2014 That's a whole big problem with musical instruments and I. I have finally narrowed down the instruments I love and want to be playing. But for years that wasn't the case. I cycled through wanting to play/playing quite a few wind instruments, some of which I never even touched (french horn, for example). But around 2006, I had my mind set on bassoon, saxophone, and oboe. But you see... That's a problem. Three instruments are still too much. For my MAIN goal (in life, I will go so far to say) is to 'master' my main instrument, the bassoon. I really, really want to learn the tenor saxophone and oboe so bad... but I have so much work left to do on the bassoon, and I never know if my life might end tomorrow, or I might become unable to play ever again, and if that were to happen, I could never be content with my life. Bassoon by itself is such a huge investment... And then crazy me just had to end up loving the oboe, too, which is another huge investment. =P So... I don't know what to do anymore... lol. 1 Everything needs more woodwind!

Lagom 204 June 16, 2014 Share June 16, 2014 Well I have a friend who's interested in psychology but also astronomy and physics, so she thinks about growing up to be a psychologist but having astronomy as her hobby. For myself I have no idea where I'm heading, but drawing, cooking(easy dishes, because I have no intentions of having no home) and taking photos(when I find a good and afforadble camera) will probably for a long time be my hobbies, so it doesn't mean I'll stop focusing on them, it just means I'll focus lesser on them and what I'm really interested in doing, which I still have no clue about.

irondreams 31 June 29, 2014 Share June 29, 2014 The secret for this is the following:Do, don't think about the size of the task. Also build systems, instead of goals. Instead of worrying about becoming a great artist (goal) work on drawing every day and getting feedback (system). If you can make yourself used to hard work. Your goals will be much closer to you. 1 Have a nice day!
crisahys 149 June 30, 2014 Share June 30, 2014 I do have MULTIPLE interests, and I do not want to give them up because skill takes time, and if you had a skill you sometimes do as your special interests, that skill grows overtime. I do music as my interests, and that experience grows, and I'd like to draw, and that grows too. Sometimes, you have to learn to combine your interests to one big project so that you have all your interests organized and that it can build up in skill altogether. Now all I need are clones of myself to gather some bucking stuff for me. 1 Link to my OC

Celtore 2,770 June 30, 2014 Share June 30, 2014 (edited) Not necessarily. You don't have to give up all your passions to focus all your effort into one thing. You can be a musician, writer and programmer, I've played the clarinet for 6 or 7 years, write a bit in my spare time and happen to be learning software engineering. It's just that I balance those activities with regards to my studies. I work my butt off as soon as an assignment is released, but I keep a certain amount of time for enjoyment or some of my other interests. A happy brain is a healthy brain after all.
