Shining Armor's mane

okay.....MAAAAAAAYBE I'm just being nitpicky here but....I've noticed Shining Armor's mane is rather long and flowing. I don't have anything against long hair in men, but he is/was captain of the royal guard. Shouldn't they have hair/mane regulations like in the real world military?

I don't see why that would matter, it would make it more realistic I guess?

Those regulations change constantly. The current regulations are based in the realities of World War I where it was necessary for soldiers to be clean shaven in order for gas masks to seal properly, and have cropped hair in order to avoid some of the diseases associated with trench warfare. Prior to that long hair was allowed as long as it was tied into a queue or club. In fact, cavalry soldiers were expected to have long hair as it was a hold-over from even earlier times when all cavalry were aristocrats (because they were the only ones who could afford horses).

As Fhaolan said, this constantely changes.

I think in Equestria long (or otherwise superior) hair is a (symbolic) sign for high power. Celestia, Luna, Sombra, and Starswirl all are/were very powerfull magicians, and all had long hair (beards are hair, too). Maybe Shining Armor is allowed to wear long hair because he is the Captain of the Royal Guard and/or because he is a very strong defensive magician.

I personally like his design, and his mane looks fine. Though, I have NO idea why every time you see him from the front, his face looks really flat.

In the real world military, people aren't sentient candy-colored equines.

What's your point?

Excellent observations! I honestly had no idea of that myself! Thanks for sharing!

I really like his.... mane?

Oh yeah, I do! Especially for being long. Short manes look weird in some cases, and Shining Armor would look horrible without one.

Shining Armour is the knight and the white horse all rolled into one convenient package! He has to have a beautiful flowing mane.

Long hair has traditionally (and in some cultures, still) been seen as a sign of manliness. It certainly isn't unheard of in other fictional works, either. (The original Battlestar Galactica from the 70's, for example. All those guys had some serious locks!)

I so need to get my hands on the comics. I can't believe they put that song lyric in there. (And, Vinyl gets her cutie mark...)
