Photon Jet 5,491 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 We all do think of something nowadays but there will be times when there are thoughts we don't want in our heads. This includes worst case scenarios of some cases which makes us paranoid if it would happen or not. I've come up with this discussion on what we all do to banish dark or unwanted thoughts to get back our confidence. For example, my methods are writing these visionary images down on a piece of paper which would then be shredded (or ripped apart in case the machine doesn't work) and saying to myself 'Dark thoughts...I banish thee!" and imagine a funny episode that features the banhammer. I know, the second method sounds silly but that's would I would do when their isn't any paper. So, do you have a way to get rid of these kind of thoughts? If so, what is it and how effective is your tactic? 5 Dark thoughts are banished! (MARVEL) Blue Blood 991 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 I usually sleep it off, or deal with the thought until something else crosses my mind. I mean, I have friends, and they make things better, but sometimes coping with it, and crying about it gets those feelings out. This is why I'm in therapy. Second in Command of the Marvel Alliance!!! Twilight Circuits 603 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 I got rid of them by forcing my myself to think it's polar opposite. A dark thought can be brought on by negatively charged memories cause by terrible experiences. So therefore, dark thoughts can also falsely make you believe a lie or believe that the 3/42 of the information you have is all of the truth and your mind should then remain closed on the subject instead of open to new ideas or truths that would expand your awareness on the topic related to those dark thoughts, impulses, or even actions. Basically, for an entire month (back in '07) I thought as positively as I possibly could without fail and refused to let a negative thought or idea enter my mind and then one day, BANG!, my mind began to let go of limitations brought on by years and years (30 to be exact) of various kinds of abuse, some of which WERE in fact self inflicted because of the dark thoughts that arose from years of abuse especially in childhood. A child only has to make up their mind, and adult has to change their mind. However, and adult has to choose to think differently, where as a child thinks as a result of their environment even if it isn't the truth. 2 For I have saved your soul in the heavens, and now save it on the ground. - TwilighCelunaCircuits
Invincible 2,091 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 I know exactly what you mean. I struggled, and sometimes still struggle with negative thoughts and mental pains. It sounds cheesy, but living while doing good deeds and thinking positive thoughts generally makes you feel happier and lighter inside. It's true. I like to believe there's good in all of us, it just sometimes needs a little nudge to draw it out. It's a conscious effort on my part. I have to remind myself, to see the good and the positive in every thing, in every situation. By seeing no evil, i eliminate it from my mind, i can freely focus on the good. It's true that sometimes you will falter - nobody is perfect. But as long as you keep fighting the darkness around you, you'll end up outshining it. 1 My OCs for Roleplay purposes: o Lit Fuse (http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/lit-fuse-r6608) o Dust Devil (http://mlpforums.com/page/roleplay-characters/_/dust-devil-r7357)
Ziggy + Angel + Rain 11,303 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 (edited) I'm obsessive compulsive, and I've had to "cancel" out bad thoughts with other thoughts. I either have to shut them down, "No, that's not going to happen / isn't real," or I have to try to "walk away" from them altogether. The latter is tougher, but the former sometimes just draws me into a loop of bad / good, bad / good. OH, and I forgot to mention something I've been doing lately: breathe in deeply (closing the eyes is optional but works for me) and then expel the air you've taken in along with the "bad things." I imagine my breath being black or smoke-like. Or like a cloud of teeny tiny black bats that's escaping through my mouth and dissolving into nothing. I'll do it a few times, and each time I'll imagine the expelled breaths being clearer than the last. Edited July 18, 2014 by PegaMister 1 "It uses the faculty of what you call imagination. Photon Jet 5,491 July 18, 2014 Author Share July 18, 2014 Yeah, most of the times the news tell reports that are considered negative or scare-mongering. I don't like that sort of stuff being heard from the news and in the articles. This is why I usually read good news articles. I know those articles won't catch much attention but I think they need to be looked at more. I might actually use Cadence's breathing technique if something bad is on my mind or sing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" to myself. 1 Dark thoughts are banished! DubWolf 17,355 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 (edited) I get dark thoughts like you've mentioned; worst case scenarios. Or perhaps making up an impossible decision that would leave one party with a terrible ending (ie... Maybe you wouldn't want to think about it, so: Save 100 people, or prevent someone you know from dying an intense painful death ) Or basically anything you'd expect from a Saw movie. And also other less dark stuff. As for how I remove them.. I just.. I don't know, I just try to forget or think about other stuff . rarity1 461 July 18, 2014 Share July 18, 2014 If any of my dark thoughts seem likely then I would choose to learn from them than rather than banish them completely, I might find a workaround or I could adapt if possible. If something bad is likely to happen and I keep saying it can't happen, if it happens then I am going to be in a state of shock rather than remain resilient. I try to find the positive in things but I won't ignore the negatives.
Photon Jet 5,491 July 18, 2014 Author Share July 18, 2014 (edited) Interesting. I might listen to that song sometime soon. I guess you can do that tactic to find out more about these dark thoughts Synyster but don't let them get into your head for too long as they can make ponies unable to concentrate on what they're doing. Arylett Charnoa 4,919 July 22, 2014 Share July 22, 2014 I've been training to do this for four years, and it's still ridiculously difficult. But I use the methods my therapist has taught me. What I try to do is to either distract myself because sometimes they're just too overpowering or my most effective method: write them out and acknowledge them in lengthy complex journal entries that are basically my catharsis, but also my way of dealing with them head-on. My therapist's advice is to take the negative thoughts and try to replace them with positive things if there's nothing I can do to fix the situation. In my journals, I basically simultaneously vent and say positive reassuring things, reminding myself of what I can do to try to mitigate the problems or what's good about me, since most of my negative unwanted thoughts are self-hatred. In this process, I make many self-discoveries and often ending up feeling loads better. But they're still constantly there, unrelenting. I'm restricting and restraining them at most given moments, if I'm honest. And I don't always have time to write. But I typically just distract myself from them until I DO have time to address them.
