Ebola has been a hot news item lately. What do you think about it? Are you concerned? Why?

Uh isn't that primarily in West Africa? You know, a country without nearly as many vaccinations & disease control as the US? I think that it is a *bit* of a stretch to say we will see a huge amount of deaths in the US caused by the Ebola virus...

The chance of this actually spreading far enough to endanger the US, (or in fact other countries well away from the currently affected area) is slim.

 

Frankly, if anyone actually thinks the US will be wiped out by it, they have allowed the media to scare them too easily.

 

EDIT: It's also actually only about 75% mortality rate. Not good, but not as bad as 90%.

Actually, the current Ebola outbreak affects a few countries in west Africa, mainly Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea. With regards to whether the Ebola virus is "coming", between the WHO, national health departments, and the CDC, I wouldn't be too concerned. In the developed world, we have high-quality healthcare and various protocols to deal with this kind of outbreak.

Actually, when it comes to highly lethal viruses like ebola, it is easier to avoid it because the people who catch it die so fast.  You don't have carriers of the disease like HIV that can propagate the virus.  When you are dead you cease to be a vector.

Actually some viruses do transmit after death... I am not sure if Ebola is one of them, but I will say this; If an outbreak happened & there were diseased bodies, it would be much easier to avoid them in a place like the US or UK than in the countries these originate from.

 

Something else I want to say; If Ebola could truly wipe us out, then how come there are still people alive in South/Central Africa? I mean, they get cases of it quite commonly. If they aren't wiped out yet, then I think a more modernized country should be ok

Also, remember that HIV can and has infected many by stealth, as it does not cause symptoms directly. Ebola is much easier to contain.

Technically, it is already in the EU. They seem to have it well contained, but you should always be reminded that governments and doctors are still humans, and still very prone to accidents and laziness.

I heard that with ebola, it doesn't start transfering from host to host until symptoms start appearing which I guess would make containing it a lot easier as long as you had records of patients and contacts.  The problem is whether or not people are getting themselves to hospitals  in west Africa in time to be tested and have ALL of their contacts checked and quarantined as well.  One could easily slip through the cracks and cause a lot of people to get sick.

I just edited my post because I thought that this was more monster shouting about the end of the world, but there may be something to worry about here. Not doomsday worry ... but worry

I normally don't, but considering that no one has ever been able to verify it is airborne and all of a sudden BAM ... it's possible now? I would have hoped that the news outlets learned their lesson after the Boston Marathon bombing.

 

Anyway, depending on how you look at it, the fact that gestation to death occurs so quickly a mass scale epidemic is unlikely. Still ... I remember the way people acted in the US during the swine flu.

And the swine flu did what, exactly? Because speaking as a US citizen I never saw or talked to anyone who even KNEW someone who had been infected (excluding one doctor friend but, well, it is his job lol), & America is still here & kicking lol. Humans are much more resilient creatures than we are given credit for, & the idea that Ebola is going to wipe us out is just hyperbole made up for the news to get attention, like when they hype up killers in the media & attacked video games to get more support from their older audiences. In fact, really, a lot of the news people stretch stuff to make it more interesting for the older audiences since those are where the majority of their views come from. Which is why you see a lot of these crazy stories on Fox & CNN & stuff

What the swine flu did was monopolized too much of the daily small talk and normal conversations that I value. It was worse that the constant rotating discussion on what the hell Miley Cyrus did on an awards show. I prize the spoken word to much to have it wasted on a regular discussion like that, which would become worse if people start talking about an airborne deadly virus.

 

Don't misunderstand me, I am not worried in the slightest for me and my family. I just hate having to be party to sheep speak.

 

I do worry for the Sierra Leone citizens however ... since I am not US-centric.

...Oopsie That was my bad lol, terribly sorry... But yeah I do remember that, everything I heard from the adults was panic over the swine flu. The people my age though were just using the internet & discovered there wasn't any real reason to panic lol, so we were all calm while the parents were freaking out like mad... I also remember Staff Infections being another big thing my family freaked over for no reason

Yep ... after a week of that I was almost driven mad. My company even had ... get this ... MULTIPLE hygiene meetings asking people to wash their hands before leaving the restroom, handed out masks, and would send people home for the slightest sign of being sick. It was like the whole place went nuts.

If the US gets just one case the news and John Q Public are going to lose their minds.

Listen. It is not the first time I hear about some "terrible virus" that "will kill entire humanity" from media. It is old boring story, just like more and more "apocalypse visions" and will not become true. It is just a way to attract viewers, because we are somehow more interested in reading about bad things instead of good ones. Don't listen to this nonsense, no death is coming our way, this virus will be finished same way as the ones before him and will not cause half as much damage as You suggest. Also - don't spread panic, there are children too for christ's sake and I already had one crying kid of my neighbour because of stupid news crying about upcoming apocalypse (that never happened).

Depends on how dumb Europe wants to be with their quarantine and immigration. You will love. Ebola actually kills too quickly to spread if a population is smart enough to take advantage of that.
