Why there seems to be no Alicorn children.

I think this is a question that can be possibly answered by Cadance and Shining Armor next season, if they have a foal. I wonder if the child would be an alicorn or a unicorn, since this seems to be genetic, judging from the way their foals were a pegasus and a unicorn from genes down their ancestery.

Nothing in show canon indicates that the sisters were born Alicorns. Nothing. All we know is that they were not seen in Hearts Warming Eve and appeared (in S4 1&2) as they do now (very unfortunate) when they deposed Discord. Now that could imply they are immortal, but I can't help to think that their accidence has something to do with the Unicorns giving up their moon/sun duties. The writers, however, seem uninterested in answering these questions. The simple explanation is that all Alicorns are ascended.

I think alicorns are some sort of an accomplishment rather than race

But in Amy Keating Rogers Journal of the Two Sisters, it shows Celly and Luna as fillies- and not as ascended princesses (which was a title and role given to them by Starswirl, of all ponies). As well as mentions of other alicorns (taking up residence in Canterlot before Equestria was founded) having had a hoof in raising the two sisters. Soooo......yeah......alicorns seem to be their own race, just like any other pony, and didn't need any accomplishment to become alicorns.

Actually, there already has been a young alicorn in the show:

I kid, of course, but in all seriousness, maybe we'll see one in the future, maybe we won't. Maybe Shining and Cadance will have an alicorn baby.

The only known born alicorns are celestia and luna soooo no they're not a race it's just an accomplishment

Well I am simply because for me the show is the highest authority. Comics, books, Etc are great but have less meaning if the show doesn't give them the stamp of approval so to speak.

This thread. This is what happens when you let a bunch of Bronies on the internet at 5 am.

I guess I never really thought about it. I always assumed the alicorns were created by a higher force, higher than Celestia, and this power made ponies into alicorns when the world needed one.

so nothing done by a writer who works on the show but- say- makes a book or something- isn't canon to you?

There are 2 kind of alicorns: the born alicorns (Celestia) and the artificial alicorns (Twilight).

What? If they're born alicorns then it's a race, no?

Celestia and luna are the only known alicorns that are alicorns by nature the rest of these alicorns must have done something good or a big accomplishment

Well since they do exist (even if they're only 2), maybe there were more born alicorns in the past...

Or some alicorns have abused their power in the past so now it's a "good guy" accomplishment ?

Do you mean that some born alicorns became evil in the past, so now, for safety reasons, it's only possible to become one after an accomplishment (like in Magical Mysery Cure)?

Yes i think so, because if you had the power of earth ponies and the powerful magic of a unicorn and the ability of the Pegasus to fly wouldn't you like to see everything under your control? Aka a " dictator"

True. This is a solid theory, that would mean Celestia and Luna had to defeat evil alicorns in the past, and that would maybe explain why they don't have children.

And i have another theory: maybe the evil alicorns killed all of the good alicorns because they're weak and Celestia and luna had enough of the evil alicorns reign of terror? So the only ones that exist now are the 4 royal ones?

That would explain why there're only 2 "good" alicorns, but I'm not sure Celestia and Luna would've been able to defeat all of them by themselves (unless they used the elements of harmony, just like in the season 4 premiere).

We only know, very little, background "family" history information about Celestia and Luna. We know that Celestia is older to Luna. We also know that Celestia, found in the beginning of the first season, that Celestia was care taker to elements of harmony, of which, she had to use against her sister in order to keep a balance. We also know that Alicorns have an unusually long life-span (Celestia is at least 1000+ years old); but also possess compelling amounts of magic power. We also know that Celestia has had multiple past dealings with Discord, among many other magic based villains, who they themselves wield powerful amounts of magic, in various degrees. However, could it be, that Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorn Pony's were created as a genetic constructs of Alicorns, but Alicorns are caretakers and guardians for the Elements of Harmony? Celestia herself, stated that the Elements of Harmony is the single most powerful magic known to creation- hence the needing of five separate elements to create a sixth in order to use.

We know that both Twilight and Cadiance were "Unicorn" pony's; this would suggest two things: 1) to become an Alicorn, a Pony must be a Unicorn; and 2) must be able to wield the Elements of Harmony. I mention point two, because Celestia sent Twilight to gain "friends", which is a pre-requisite for and essential factor in the use of, understanding of, and conditions of the Elements of Harmony. Refer to the final couple of episodes for Season 4, as Twilight battles the boss villain; the amount of power she alone as a new Alicorn had to battle the villain shows that only Unicorn who have a gift or pre-disposition with magic, can wield the responsibility of being an Alicorn; hence the reason for Celestia entrusting the Elements of Harmony to Twilight and her friends.

Now, this begs another questions: predicating that this is true, then where are Celestia's friend's? After all, she alone used the Elements against her sister! So, does that mean that Celestia made the Elements of Harmony, because it's not safe, nor should, any one Pony wield absolute magical powers. Are her and Luna the last of a dying Pony type? In which case, this would also stand to reason that, referencing the episodes of Equestia history, that something cataclysmic (magic war of unimaginable levels), took place in which Alicorn's were split into three seperate Pony types- Earth, Pegasus, and Unicorn. With Celestia and Luna as sole survivors! And the fact that Celestia had to put her sister away for a thousand years, because of how all that took place, means that what we learn about Celestia and Luna's past, is only a fragment of how catastrophic the magic war could have been; I mean Celestia herself, created the "Wonderbolts" for a specific purpose. Discord and Tirek have known each other, and Celestia personally for well over a couple of thousand years. In that case, this would stand to suggest a catastrophic magic war took place, with Celestia and Luna being the only survivors of their kind. Which  Equestia's Pony history episodes can also support this theory of a catastrophic magic war. Tirek had the ability to consume magic for crying out loud!

Another Alicorn would threaten Celestia's reign, since she could both use magic, and infiltrate areas inaccessible by ground.
What? Why would the alicorns be hostile to each other?

Celestia placed rules on Equestria to prevent other Alicorns from appearing.
Why would she do that?

Cross-type marriages are taboo, if not against the law.
What does this have to do with alicorns?

In the case of an Alicorn birth at the hospital, the doctors would claim that there was a miscarriage, and hand the foal to the authorities.
That's illegal, immoral, and tottally OOC for Celestia and Pony society in general.

If an Alicorn foal is found, the foal is taken away, and an investigation occurs. All who knew the little Alicorn would be detained.
The hell? Why? Also illegal and immoral and OOC for Equestria.

The Alicorn baby is "dealt with" in a morbid matter.
Don't make me repeat myself here...

The foal is taken to a top secret facility where they are brainwashed, and trained to be highly specialized military units.
What kind of Equestria are you picturing? Well not canon Equestria that's for sure!!!

Highly specialized surgeons perform a wingectomy or hornectomy on the poor pony. A memory loss spell is then cast on them, so that they will forget their past.
WHAT THE LITTERAL HELL... body rape anyone? We cry about circumcision... imagine if i cut one of your arms would that be okay with you? Because this is kinda the same...

Memory loss spells are also performed onto the witnesses.
Also mind rape...

The witnesses are classified as 'mentally-ill', and are held in mental institutions.
Illegal and immoral. I've said this so many times... things like this DON'T HAPPEN IN EQUESTRIA.

The witnesses are "dealt-with" in a morbid matter.
And now Celestia is a murderer of not only children but of her own ponies who challenge her authority. Seriously everything you say is born simply out of some conspiracy theory and i can't find a single point of reason other than the paranoid thinking that Celestia's power is challenged by having more alicorns into play.

I assume you think that alicorns are born when pegasi and/or unicorns mate or their genes collide? Yeeeeeeeeeeea.... that's not how it works i believe. Where did you even get that idea?

"Cross-type marriages are taboo, if not against the law."

If that's the case, then explain the "Cake's" family history? Mr. Cake states that, while he and Mrs. Cake are Earth Pony's, her family has a Unicorn in it, hence the Cake's daughter being a unicorn; and Mr. Cake's family lineage has a Pegasus in it, hence the Cake's son being a Pegasus..
