Has anyone ever found MLP actually kind of depressing?

On the side of light:

Pinkie Pie went through such an intense rejection of her negative feelings from the Sonic Rainboom that her entire existence revolves around making ponies happy. This means her happiness is tied to other's happiness; she can't exist on her own like the others could. Pinkie would just fall apart without her friends; we've seen it happen. The Smile Song, in that context, is the most depressing song in MLP.

Rainbow Dash's desperate need to feel accepted, to the point she'll go into a mental breakdown/sink into depression if she feels she's not the best at what she's good at. Also, the disturbing lack of pegasi with parents and the unfortunate conclusions that come with it.

Twilight Sparkle's relationship with Celestia is disturbing. Twilight is so desperate to avoid failing Celestia she considered sacrificing the Crystal Empire to pass one of her tests. Bad words from Celestia in a Canterlot Wedding sent her into a depression. The two times she's legitimately failed her, she slipped into a mental breakdown, one of which almost destroyed Ponyville.

Celestia will be forced to see the passing of everyone. She's probably already been through the deaths of at least several dozen of her own private students, as well as thousands of general students and teachers at her school, and Twilight and her friends will be no exception.  Her one comfort in this life through all of this was it sister... until she turned evil, and Celestia was forced to choose between her and all of the ponies she spent years protecting. After Luna's banishment, she found love, only to have it viciously closed off in her face by Starswirl the Bearded. He presumably died, and Celestia had to see or know about his passing. Recently, she found her true love again... only to have him sacrifice his soul to the forces of evil to save her, then have her only access to him shattered.

Luna, too, will be forced to witness the passing of everyone. While Celestia had her students, Luna had her guards. She moved the moon across the sky every night for years, and no one batted an eye at it. Instead, they celebrated her sister, though they had both fought and nearly died for Equestria. She became so lonely and bitter that she allowed darkness to possess her, and tried to kill her sister. She was left alone on her moon for a thousand years, with nothing to remember her by but tales to scare children. Time erased any fond memories of Luna; even now, people can only remember the nightmare. She spends her free time helping children fight the darkness inside them like she never could.

Spike can never be happy; it's been deemed by the hand of god(s) themselves. Even moving away from the meta...
His one position in life recently became a part time job. He can never see his parents because all dragons have been deemed foul tempered pony haters; they'd most likely reject him. Rarity will never realize the extent of his affectations; if she does, she can either never let on that she knows or has to immediately reject him. He'll never find a proper dragon girl either; mostly because of issue 2. He can never be happy with his life, or he'll goof up majorly ala Owl's Well and Equestria games. He's also forced to battle the natural instincts of his species every day, and he can't give in, even for a second, or he'll destroy everyone and everything around him.

On the side of darkness:

Sunset Shimmer was kicked out of Canterlot for a concept she never understood, when all it would have taken was Celestia's guiding hand to show her. Then she got replaced by someone exactly like her, only difference being Celestia was actually willing to try this time. Now Sunset Shimmer is stuck without a destiny in a world where destiny means everything. Even worse, she ends up with "other her's" friends, just to drive the point in about how much of copy she is. even though she was technically first. She is Twilight's mirror in practically every way.

Discord was locked in stone for thousands of years just for obeying his nature. Even now, he can't seem to control his urge to create chaos, it just tends to happen around him. He was let out under the pretense that he had to be friends with one the ones who sealed him away. He finally changed, but now, he has has to deal with the fact that out of his six friends, only Fluttershy truly seems to enjoy his company; the rest of them see him as a threat or a nuisance.
