And in the season 5 finale 'The Cutie Re-Mark' part 2, as the guard for Nightmare Moon during that alternative history. Since Rainbow Dash is one of them, it's heavily implied in that episode that it is an enchantment/illusion applied to pegasi.

Though she did have vertical slits for pupils until, strangely, she took off her helmet.

I suppose Luna/Nightmare Moon preferred a particular aesthetic with her guards? Looking at Celestia's royal guard, it does appear that there is a uniformity in their colours: perhaps this is part of their uniform, so to speak, unless they just happen to be identical siblings.

 This would explain why not much emphasis what put on bat ponies throughout the series, otherwise this would have been a significant missed opportunity in the series.

Possibly a fault in the animation, as she otherwise lacks the extra ear fur, helmet or not, unlike the other guards
