How does the Mane Six acquire gold/silver bits to buy things? I know AJ sells apples and apple cider, Rarity might make bits from selling dresses. But what of the others?

Well Dash works as a weather pegasus for Ponyville, even in a position of authority for such so assumedly she gets paid more. Fluttershy performs a service of "animal control" but in sort of the semi-mystical manner that the pegasus do their job. I'm not sure if she gets paid for it, as much as she's just allocated resources such as food, medicine, and her home. Pinkie Pie works full time at Sugarcube Corner, to the point of living there, and assumedly the Cakes pay her for babysitting as well. Twilight probably was paid as the librarian. No telling what she makes now though!

If that were the case, Unicorns would have to be under constant Orwellian surveillance that they weren't transmuting common metals into precious ones.

 

(Like those scanners at the Crystal Empire. Seriously, am I the only one who got really pissed that those things even exist!?)

Maybe it's a forbidden spell that's used by Celestia to create bits? Much like the Alicorn amulet Trixie used to make the impossible possible. If it were true, it would ruin fans because of counterfeiting, so it's just based on assumptions I suppose.

Well it would not exactly be counterfeiting because Celestia is the recognized authority. It would make sense minting the currency is something she does.

 

Counterfeiting though is exactly why, if alchemy is something in Equestria, it would be tightly controlled or there would have to be someone to detect transmuted bits.

Yes they have jobs and all get paid:

 

Twilight - Runs the Library in Ponyville (will probably get rebuilt in Season 5), gets a weekly student allowance from Princess Celestia. But now she collects taxes from Ponyville because she is the new monarch of the land.

 

Rainbow Dash - Works as the local weather manager in Ponyville, gets a weekly payment from Cloudsdale.

 

Rarity - Runs a boutique selling clothes of all kinds, gets payed in advance when orders are commissioned.

 

Pinkie Pie - Works as a baker at Sugarcube Corner, get a weekly payment from the Cakes.

 

Applejack - Runs an Apple Orchard and sells apple related products to the public, get payed on the spot when selling at the market.

 

Fluttershy - Works as an animal caretaker in Ponyville, gets payed up front to babysit local pets.

 

Spike - Works as Twilight's assistant, gets a weekly allowance from Twilight.

I posted "How Old Are The Mane 6" & said Twilight was 14  in episode 1.  She was at school until then, so no doubt her parents paid for her + maybe a scholarship (Princess C called her "My prize pupil")  I don't think she owned the library, but she lived there & was a librarian/watchman & Spike was janitor. She probably got paid for this (Probably a sinecure, not much demand for books) After season 4, the library is destroyed, but she is a princess & owns a castle.  Perhaps Princess C pays her in return for her help

 

Rarity runs a dress shop, is costume designer for Safire, + manager for a band.  (If you  were fashionista to a race of nudists,  you'd  be bitchy, too  -but she abuses the privilege & every one else).  + Ponies seem to use gems for money.    In Dog & Pony Show, Twilight makes it sound like not all unicorns can find gems.  So, she can always turn to prospecting for extra cash

 

AJ has the family farm.  They sell apples, cider, "sparkling cider" (whatever that is.  I think it is hard cider  (alcohol), but in a TVY cartoon, Hasbro can't endorse booze) + baked goods made w apples.  They've also got Zap Apple Jelly in season & some other crops  Most small farmers do odd jobs like cut firewood  & snow removal.   + Mac has a job w R's band

 

Dash is Head  Weather Pony for Ponyville  It is probably like most government jobs.  Underpaid but secure.

 

Pinkie works in the Sugar Cube + has her party planner business (Although, she seems to do most of that for free)

 

Fluttershy seems to be the only 1 w no regular job.  She keeps chickens, so likely sells eggs & feathers (they still use quill pens + probably, feather stuffing)  She also does vet work & pet care & training

 

Hasbro says Scootaloo is not an orphan.  So, like the other CMCs, her parents provide for her..

I doubt it; That's not quite Rarity's kind of generosity. I believe she would lend a few bits to friends if they needed it, but by no means would she provide a steady income for her friends. Her line of work is expensive, and perilous. One successful fashion line can bring in a lot of money, but one or two unsuccessful lines can send her into ruin. Especially when she lives in a town like Ponyville, where fashion is little more than a special occasion afterthought.

But where exactly in the show does it specify how they make money? These were some good thoughts, and maybe I'm wrong, but I haven't seen it in the show. Maybe it's information given by Hasbro if I may suggest? Or maybe I'm blind, haha.

We know for a fact that AJ and Rarity make money from their work. It's not too big an assumption that Rainbow, Pinkie and Twilight get paid for their jobs.

Perhaps we may know in the future, but it must be evident for it to be proven true. For me that is.

I would say Season 1 Episode 1 is your best bet. There are small details throughout the series so it is kinda weird to say specific episodes. Although when it comes to Twilight's home, it is just a library. And last time I checked, you rent books not buy them so it is technically not a job. Fluttershy somewhat has a job (Taking care of animals/nature) but it doesnt pay, just like Twilight's job (Which is looking after a library and being a princess). I'm also not sure about RD though. That one is kinda weird. However I would say AJ's job pays because ponies buy apples. The same goes for Pinkie since she makes and sells sweets and Rarity makes clothes for people.

Oh I thought it was a charity act they did, since we never see them getting paid in bits (at least I haven't). The bits just kind of show up from somewhere. Perhaps they do get paid for their work, it's just behind-the-scenes I guess lol.

It is evident. I don't know how you miss this stuff; I'm not familiar enough with the series to point you to the exact evidence, but it is there. I'm Sure Rainbow's job is mentioned in Hurricane Fluttershy though, and Pinkie's job in "Baby Cakes" or "Mmmmmystery on the (I forgot the word) Express."

Oh yes I know that, I actually think I may have posted a misleading topic lol. My question was somewhere like "How do they get bits?". I suppose I meant the after-affect of a job. :/
