movies/tv Adventure Time VS My Little Pony

The title may be misleading; this is not a game.

One of my friends raving about the show Adventure Time. They are convinced that it has good plot lines and lovable characters and that it is inspirational and that everybody should watch it.

I've never seen the show but, immediately, you would think it is a children show, wouldn't you?

But that besides the point.

Whenever she talks about it, I resist the temptation to bring up MLP. Because I think: How can MLP be much different to Adventure Time? Why is it acceptable for people my age to watch Adventure Time yet so many are mocked for watching MLP?

As you can imagine, I never did mention the ponies. But I would still like to know: Is Adventure Time really more advanced? For teenagers/adults? How can we get away with Adventure Time when we can't with MLP when they appear practically the same?

Here's what I think: Adventure Time is a kids show trying to reach for a teenage audience. It's silly and random nature as well as its imagination is aimed to make older kids feel younger again.

MLP is a kids show trying to reach for everyone. Its cohesive writing, adult references, and respect to the viewer's intelligence help achieve that.

While Adventure Time is a good show, I gotta admit that the only reason it doesn't get viewed as the same as MLP is because it can be be funny in the random, obnoxious, butt and fart jokes way, along with mild references to sex and other, more "adult" things, while MLP keeps it's humor clean and kid friendly. However, AT does have a very unique cast of characters, a fun imaginative setting, and a surprisingly deep plot that takes you on quite a whirlwind of revalations.

Gravity Falls is the best cartoon ever, though, in my opinion.

No, Adventure time is just way to freaking childish. I can't stand the main characters at all, they're just way too damn stupid to be likable, annoying ass villains and just annoying characters in general... Freaking hate that show, MLP all the way >~>

I think their official age demographic is a bit higher than FiM's, around 10 methinks. This means that they can get away with a lot more in terms of story lines, messed up stuff etc.. the FiM writers have to thread waay more lightly when it comes to tackling subjects like sex or violence.

The show is pretty good, but in my opinion overhyped and overcredited by many.

It has some moments (the main character dealing with breakups) and some interesting characters (Marceline, Simon/Iceking), but in places it just feels random for randomness' sake.

I personally enjoyed the first few seasons immensely, but lately it has been pretty hit and miss for me.

Also, as has pointed out; everything that Adventure Time does, Gravity Falls does better.

Actually, Adventure Time has tackled a lot of far more mature subjects than MLP has; for example, despite the fact that it's viewership sits between boys aged 6-10 (similar to the MLP audience), it's recently been hinted at showing details of a lesbian relationship in the upcoming books. It might just be, as I said, a HINT, but even having that in a show for children in such a world as today (Russia with its anti-gay policies, as an example) is refreshing.
A lot of people have attacked this as "fanservice" from what I can see, but it's a bold step and one I think is important to instill. If characters of a show as widely commercial and recognizable as Adventure Time. Something a show like MLP, due to its nature, will never even touch. They're far more conservative, and that's where AT surpasses MLP by a longshot.
Also, AT is supposed to be far more of a nostalgic show, and yeah, it's often potty humour - probably what you laughed at during those target demographic years, and what some people yearn to see in mainstream media again now that it's cool. It doesn't try too hard to take itself seriously and it has hilarious satires (Lemongrab, anyone?) of cultures today and of the past that can ALSO appeal to an older audience, similar to how MLP aims to entertain parents with references as well.
I'm not saying AT is the best show in the world, but I would choose it to watch over ponies. I think the characters are pretty solid and have equal or greater development and personality value than MLP, where the characters revert to how they "usually" act when it is most convenient, and the world-building is pretty godly.

tl;dr they aren't comparable because AT and MLP have completely different targets, goals, writers, characters, etc. In fact, AT cannot compare to most current children's shows, so you could replace AT vs. MLP with basically anything.

I've wondered that too. My friends all rave about Adventure Time but if I bring up My Little Pony they either make this face   or this face  :eww: .

I like Adventure Time too but I never really got that into it. I'll watch it if I notice it's on but I won't go out of my way to marathon every episode or anything. Some people just won't give MLP a chance because of it's history. Sure Adventure Time and My Little Pony are very different but they do have a few similarities. They are both about friendship after all.

Adventure Time is anything but a kids show, in my opinion. Sure, it looks cute and cuddly on the outside, but within is quite a dark backstory and characters. Certainly more mature than MLP.

If you'd like to know a spoiler regarding the dark backstory...

It's set in a post-apocalyptic earth, and I guess you could say everyone's a mutant. Bit dark for a kids show, eh?

Too be honest you can't really compare them, as they're so different.

Adventure Time is rated PG, which makes a huge diffrence in terms of what you can write into a show. The FiM writers a alot more restricted in what subjects they can tackle and how to do so. Do not confuse being limited by demographic with being consservative.

Except that they were as vague as possible and backpaddled like all hell when questioned by the Soccer Mom brigade.

Plus, Rainbow Rocks did pretty much the same thing with Bonbon and Lyra.

I think you're editing parts of my post out that explained my points more fully, so maybe you should read it in full before picking out what makes your points appear to be more founded. Neither of our points are founded, so it doesn't really matter.

When I say conservative, I mean more vanilla in choice of source material and messages, not in a "THE POLITICAL AGENDAAAA" way, for the record. So yes, I do understand the difference of ratings, which is basically what I was trying to say, only...you kind of don't seem to have read my post the way it was intended. I don't care about your opinions at all, really, but it is irritating that you cut out parts that I added to try and explain my own views so that they seem, as you put it, "vague", which is PROBABLY why you aren't getting it. In fact, you skipped a lot, such as when I explicitly discussed the demographic of Adventure Time in like, the first few sentences, haha.

To some degree the points are vague, but honestly, there's no reason for me to prefer Adventure Time over MLP, and this is all opinion based; you can't back this up with facts, nor can you say "well, two girls who are friends are possibly lesbians because...they talk" (I haven't seen Rainbow Rocks, but I would LOVE to see the evidence that there is at all a possibility of something more if the writers stated that in any way, please, as I think that'd be great). I just like it more. Analyzing why I prefer one cartoon to another isn't something I really do in my spare time.

I believe Silverwisp is referring to this scene where they are singing together during the contest:

(I must say, I find Lyra to be quite attractive in this movie)

As soon as two girls do anything together, they're automatically assumed to be lesbians. I've seen plenty of girls do this kind of thing and are all completely heterosexual.

=========================================================================

Aaaanyway...

My brother-in-law and little sister got me into watching Adventure Time. I've watched all six seasons up to the current episode. It took me watching the first two seasons to finally start to actually enjoy it (starting in the third season). I feel like character development is not as strong since the stories are only ~10 minutes long each. Despite the shorter time, there is an underlying story, but it often feels few and far between. I have actually come to enjoy the background characters more than the main characters in AT (something I have not done with MLP; Mane 6 FTW!)

All in all, I still prefer MLP over AT. That being said...Marceline the Vampire Queen...she's...amazing...

@

Please be assured, that I make it a point of completely reading through a post before replying to it.

I quoted the passages the way I did because my concerns were with these statements in particular and wanted to make clear, what I was responding to.

It was my impression that you put the differences in tone down to the worldview of FiM's writing team, rather than the difference in in subject matter and restrictions set by demographic rating. If I was mistaken in that, I apologize.

As for my second point, I was using "vague" in reference to the fact that the AT writing staff did not specify the nature of Bubblegum's and Marceline's relationship. They also refused to go into detail upon being questioned aboutr it (presuably to avoid unnecessary trouble).
