ShadOBabe 18,997 January 9, 2015 Share January 9, 2015 (edited) I tried to use the search feature and didn't notice this question. It just hit me out of the blue. What do the Flim Flam Brothers cutie marks represent? One brother has an apple with a missing piece, and that missing piece appears on the other brother. I'm not sure it represents cider making. They seem to have abandoned that by their next appearance. But I'm not sure it represents conning or scamming either. Does it represent the teamwork they have with each other? What are your theories/headcanons? Edited January 9, 2015 by ShadOBabe 1 Check out my artwork any time: http://shadobabe.deviantart.com/ "OMG; You are such a troll. Silver Letter 1,832 January 9, 2015 Share January 9, 2015 They seem to favor using apples in their schemes and they would fit together, meaning they are a team. I would say scams but their cider thing wasn't a scam. 1 Silver Letter!!! Pastel 7,630 January 9, 2015 Share January 9, 2015 (edited) I guess that means they're inseparable: they always work together. Maybe it's an apple because the writers originally planned to feature them in the cider episode only. Edited January 9, 2015 by Blobulle
ShadOBabe 18,997 January 9, 2015 Author Share January 9, 2015 I guess that means they're inseparable: they always work together. Maybe it's an apple because the writers originally planned to feature them in the cider episode only. Yeah I could believe that. It's entirely possible to have a cutie mark that doesn't lend itself specifically to any one job. It's totally possible that working together is what they're best at. (omg, colt flim flam simultaneous cutie mark backstory... this needs to be a thing) Though if they're using their super teamwork skills in a negative way, that's kind of sad. Silver Letter 1,832 January 9, 2015 Share January 9, 2015 Though if they're using their super teamwork skills in a negative way, that's kind of sad. That alone could use backstory in a decent fan fiction. Maybe they only turned to scams after the Apples rejected their generous offer in season 2. 2 Silver Letter!!! Cwanky 17,584 January 9, 2015 Share January 9, 2015 Perhaps its just me but they seem like they're twins. And given that they work together, the 2 apple halves reflect that: they're two parts of the same whole. Apples on a whole are considered healthy and nutritious. But they also have a reputation of being used as ways to fool and con people, particularly shiny red apples, particularly in Sleeping Beauty, which is what seems to be the motif for Flim and Flam. Remember, they're con men, so there trade is basically deception and manipulation, poisoning the populace with propaganda and enticing offers and promises that are often sugarcoated lies and/or distortions. And since they're diametrically opposite to Applejack who represents honesty, so what better than the poisoned/shiny deceptive apple to represent them?
Ianpiersonjdavis 512 January 9, 2015 Share January 9, 2015 As others have said, they are twins so it could be representative of that motif. But, it also has different pieces red and white, which strikes me as a sort of pie graph, which could be representative of their roles as businessmen-except as an apple because of the cider. Banul 3,831 January 10, 2015 Share January 10, 2015 I always always assumed it represented their loyalty to each other and their inseparability. Both of their marks together makes a whole apple.

Judgement 445 January 17, 2015 Share January 17, 2015 Maybe it means they turn ugly when they are cut open? (Figuratively speaking, like how a cut apple turns brown when air gets to it, maybe the Flim Flam brothers' marks represent how they get angry or unpleasant when someone competes with them and makes their product look bad. That's quite a stretch of a theory though, so I wouldn't trust my answer.) Tom V.S. Boulder: Who will win?
EVBP 94 July 3, 2016 Share July 3, 2016 Can I postulate that their cutie marks represent a sort of "half of the picture"? For example, in their first appearance they offer what seems like a great deal to Ponyville. But to the Apple family, it would have a negative impact on their bottom line. There is a catch to their offer - how the profits would be split. Likewise, in their second appearance, they are selling a tonic that seems to good to be true - because it is. Again, there is more to the story than meets the eye. Which is why I think their cutie marks represent half of the picture. On the one hand, you have an almost whole apple cutie mark - which could seem like a positive thing. And on the other hand, you have just one slice of apple, which by itself doesn't seem bad, but when you realize the other half of the picture is a mostly whole apple... do you feel cheated? I wish I could express my theory better, but I feel like their cutie marks work in tandem to represent a situation where it is best to read the fine print. Headcanons, you say? Well, here's my headcanon: Flim and Flam were part of the Apple family, maybe in Appleoosa (hence the apple mark to begin with), but their mother was a unicorn. Without Earth Pony strength, they couldn't keep up with their cousins and they couldn't farm, and some of their cousins made fun of them for that. To get back at their cousins, together they planned an elaborate scam or scheme involving their quick wits; they succeeded together, and then received their cutie marks, which represent their teamwork and how one fills in for the other's failures. Encouraged by their success, they continued with their scams and manipulation - they were unstoppable together, and they couldn't be kept apart, so eventually they were kicked out of Appleoosa and have been con ponies ever since. But their marks don't have anything to do with their scams. They're just about their teamwork.
PurpleWonderPower 81 September 25, 2018 Share September 25, 2018 Flam's cutie mark is an apple with a slice missing, and Flim's cutie mark is the missing slice. That represents that they are meant to do everything as a twosome.
