Among the Mane 6, Who Are the Best Friends?

If you think of it like a line with each friend closest to the ones on either side of them, from left to right, we have Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Applejack. (Then Applejack, you could argue, loops back around for an interesting "polar opposites" relationship with Rarity.)

 

Pinkie Pie, meanwhile, is often in her own world and doesn't firmly fit anywhere, though you could argue she's most often just to the left of Rainbow Dash. And Twilight, likewise, is also not fixed at any point, since she's the newest friend, who binds them all closer together, though she most often seems just to the right of Applejack, looping back towards Rarity.

Well, to me, I would have to say Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, and a lot of that is due to their history together. When they're together, they seem to have the best chemistry together. Granted that's not to say Dash's relationship with AJ and Pinkie isn't all that connectable, but I just feel that Flutters and Dash have a stronger bond.

Fluttershy and Rarity have always had a very distinct and unique interaction, and I do adore it like mad. While it doesn't have the shipping quality of Rarity and AJ, it has something a lot more meaningful and tangible in the show, with Rarity understanding a level of Flutters most of the Mane 4 outside of those two know. Rarity has shown to be quite friendly and gentle with Flutters, something not even Rainbow Dash or Twilight has done, and while Pinkie and AJ have had moments of connection with her they've also had... Not so good moments... Rarity however, while having a miscommunication with Flutters in "Green Isn't Your Color" has never felt particularly mean-spirited to Flutters. Unfortunately, we don't have as much dynamic of Flutters to Rarity, except for the fact that Flutters' natural grace and demeanor make for quite the pairing with an up-front and out-going fashion designer, and Flutters has been shown to have knowledge of the fashion industry to a degree, despite that somehow still leading to a complete flop on her dress (seriously how did that one happen!? She was the only one other than Rarity who knew what was going on!)

 

Then Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, simply put they have the most energy and enthusiasm, and have been shown to care for one another quite deeply. Pinkie was instantly worried about RD when the latter went to the Wonderbolt Academy, and has been shown to be very in-tune to RD's feeling (without the backlash). RD, on the other hand, has come to understand Pinkie better than most of the other ponies do, at least to me it seems she does. RD definitely cares about Pinkie and the pink pone's emotions, and certainly has the energy and enthusiasm to keep up with Mistress of the 4th Wall.

 

Twi and AJ... Eh, I dunno, I do agree with what other's have said about it but I've never thought about it truly... I guess a powerful magical user combined with the knowledge and will-power of best orange earth pony with apples on her flank and a cowboy hat on her head that is canon and part of the Mane 6 (HA NOW YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN ABOUT ME NOT LIKING ONE RANDOM BG PONY FROM A SINGLE SCENE IN A RANDOM EPISODE I DON'T REMEMBER! >: D) would make a lot of sense, but... Yeah, never thought about it before to be honest...

Twi x AJ - In a group setting, AJ more than any of the others, seems to have the most dialogue with Twi who is the central character. AJ has pretty much taken on the role of first mate and second in comand to Twi. They are the brains and brawn of the group.

 

Flutter x Rarity - Their friendship feels more "sisterly" to me than the others. They share similar intrests and just seem to feel comfortable being in each others company.

 

RD x Pinky - The two youngest of the group and the most rambunctious. Their's may be the weakest pairing of the three. Pinky does seem to annoy RD a fair bit but she seems to have learned to accept Pinky for who she is.

I would have to say that Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash are the closest of the mane 6.

I think there's something to be said for the relationships between all of the Mane 6, but if I have to pick the strongest friendship I'd probably go with AJ and Dashie.

 

Both AJ and Dashie are very competitive and tomboyish, not to mention proud of their abilities. (Dash more so than AJ, but still) However, they do have very opposite traits as well. AJ is much more clam and level-headed than Dash is but I do think they understand each other perfectly despite that.

 

Another thing is that AJ is always the one to grab Rainbow's tail whenever she wants to do something impulsive. In my mind (which is hardly objective due to AppleDash being my preferred ship) that always symbolizes that AJ knows her well enough to know when she's about to make a rash decision and reacts as soon as Rainbow begins to make her move. I want to rationalize this better, but I can't seem to find the right words for it, so I'll just leave it at this.

They seem to be quite close, no matter how you pair them up, but here goes:

 

Applejack and Twilight, especially in the first season

 

Rarity and Fluttershy seem to be very close, especially when it comes to spas.

 

Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, especially when it comes to playing pranks.

It seems that Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash are best friends seeing as they go back all the way to their childhood. 

 

Applejack seems to be a wild card with either Twilight or Rarity.

Rarity and Fluttershy as well as Rainbow and Applejack. Fluttershy and Rainbow are more of childhood friends but they don't really have anything in common with each other aside from that. Applejack and Rainbow are rivals who are always looking to outdo each other, which has built a sort of comradery between them. Fluttershy and Rarity also share interests in the more 'girly' things compared to the rest.

Dash has noticeable bonds with Fluttershy, AJ and Pinkie. Her friendship with Fluttershy is probably the longest-running, because they've known each other the longest from what we've seen. After that, her pranking friendship with Pinkie and her rivalry friendship with AJ are on equal terms in different ways, imo.

I think it has to be between Rarity and Flutershy, who seem to spend alot of time together and they both seem to understand fashion (fluttershy knowing crazy stuff about design in suited for success), and Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, who have been practically life-long friends since the beggining in Cloudsdale.

 

I would of put Rainbow Dash and Applejack near the top but their competition and prideseems to get a bit in the way of their friendship even though their very similar.

 

But then again as we know fluttershy is very shy so maybe the reason she is seen with her friends alot is because she dosern't have many other things to do, although, this probably helps the fact that she is top with closest friends because this means she spends more time with her friends making them just get more closer together.

I think their all great friends to tell you the truth. The only reason why we think some characters are better friends with one another is because they've had more screen time together. For example, Rarity and Rainbow Dash have yet to have serious interaction with one another or an episode.

Rarity and Fluttershy are obviously the closest of the bunch. I would go to say that Dash and Pinkie hang out a lot as well. That leaves you with Twilight and Applejack. Twilight's best friend is Spike, and Applejack is closer to her own family, so I'd say those two would be the odd ones out.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. No other couple have seen as much interaction and emotion than this one.

They are close enough to easily show emotion, and have no problem attacking the other's faults. More resembling a male friendship actually

Actually, Fluttershy said she wasn't that into fashion (at least not enough to want to be a model). Her criticism in Suited for Success was probably just a cartoonish gag.

I'm surprised to learn that so many people consider Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy to be close.  Yes, they're both from Cloudsdale, but I don't think that necessarily means that they've been BFFs since they were fillies.  Even in the scene when Dash stood up for her, it seemed more about defying the bullies than anything else, and I got the sense that she would have done that no matter who was being bullied.

 

Anyway, I agree with those that cited Fluttershy and Rarity as being particularly close.  Obviously going to the spa together is a regular activity for them, but like others have pointed out, Fluttershy clearly knows quite a lot about sewing.  These two appear to share some common interests in a way that the other members of their group don't.

 

Of course all we have to go by is what we've seen so far.  Future episodes could reveal much deeper levels of friendship between some of these characters, but until they do, Rarity & Fluttershy seem like the best of friends to me.
