As this is dealing with the comics it has been moved to the Comic and Books sub-forum. :)

As for your questions, it's just best to read them as they are released. The main series is pretty good staying in it's order. If you're speaking of the main series with the Micro and Friends Forever series, then AFAIK there is no set continuity.

The different series *do* occasionally reference each other, so...

Personally, I'd begin from the beginning and read in release order. Yeah, they're original stories, not just episodes turned into comics.  :)

You might also want to consider buying digital versions instead of physical copies. No shipping costs, no time spent waiting for them to be delivered. comiXology.com is good for that.

Here's a (slightly updated version of a) pastebin doc I prepped for someone else that gives the release order of the comics. http://pastebin.com/nTJS2zez

out of the main series, you don't need to read arcs in order to completely understand them, though, is midly advisable. Micro-series, Friends Forever and Fiendship is magic are one-shots, making the order of reading almost completely irrelevant

No order, each arc in the main series is self contained as is every single Fiendship, Micro, and Friends Forever

Just stay far far away from the Dash Micro(no I'm never gonna let this go)

I'd go chronological, but that's me. The first four arcs of the comics (issues 1-12) still have Unicorn Twilight, but for the most part, outside the arcs running through multiple issues in the main series (ie The Return of Chrysalis Arc in issues 1-4), the comics could be read in any order.

Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.

I'd read issues 1-12, then the Micro Series(the graphic novels are called Pony Tales), then alternating back and forth between the main series and Friends Forever, which I personally do by volume.
